In addition to diverse, rich cultural traditions and abundant economic opportunity for some, these regions also reflect the challenges of modernity, including crime, poverty, ethnic tensions, adaptations to climate change, and disparities in health, education, and access to care. With contributions from noted psychologists in the Caribbean and Oceania, as well as experts from around the globe, this book provides nuanced examination of significant psychological issues in nations such as Fiji, Guyana, Belize, Haiti, Jamaica, and more. Psychologists, psychiatrists, and other mental health professionals with an interest in this part of the world, will find this volume a rich resource, as will those generally interested in the relationship between culture and psychology. This book takes you on an outstanding journey of what is occurring in cultural psychology in the 21st century. It addresses the abundance of each nation through a transformational lens of current practices in psychology in Oceania and the Caribbean. I would absolutely recommend it to anyone interested in sailing the high seas connecting the present with the endless possibilities of those who dare to journey into the waters of a divine future.”- Florence Denmark, Past-President, American Psychological Association "Chock full of expert knowledge and insights, Psychology in Oceania and the Caribbean is an indispensable resource for psychologists. A must-read that will expand your understanding of life in these regions and beyond! “- Pamela A. Hays, PhD, Author of Addressing Cultural Complexities in Practice "This is a breath-taking book in its coverage of the uniquely endowed psychology worlds of Oceania and the Caribbean. Now that Dr. Rich, Dr. Ramkumar, and colleagues have produced this awesome book volume on the cultural psychology of the rim water nations, I have a palpable sense of relief from their having addressed a huge gap in cultural psychology scholarship. Book Effect of Tropical Cyclones on Coastal Marine Ecosystems

Download or read book Effect of Tropical Cyclones on Coastal Marine Ecosystems written by Xenia Neal and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tropical cyclone activity is predicted to intensify with anthropogenic climate change. Therefore, there has been a call to action in the scientific community to increase knowledge of the impacts of tropical cyclones on ecosystems. In particular, there is a wide knowledge gap in the understanding of how tropical cyclones influence coastal marine ecosystems. Using a standardized Web of Science database search, I identified 101 peer-reviewed articles documenting the impacts of tropical cyclones on coastal marine ecosystems in the North Atlantic Ocean, including coral reefs, mangrove forests, salt marshes, and seagrass meadows. Here, I summarize the results of these articles with the aim of improving general understanding of how past tropical cyclones have affected coastal marine ecosystems. Specifically, I summarize the types of tropical cyclones that have most often been documented to impact ecosystems (tropical storms or Category 1 to 5 hurricanes), how often the impacts have been documented in each of the past 5 decades (1970s, 1980s, 1990s, 2000s, and 2010s), and at what level of biological organization most of the impacts have been recorded (organismal, population, community, or ecosystem). Category 3 or greater intensity hurricanes have been responsible for most of the impacts to marine ecosystems recorded in the literature. However, there is no clear increase or decrease in the number of impacts recorded in each decade. This result may be due to a time lag in the publication of research results that has reduced the number of reports in the most recent decade. Most of the impacts of tropical cyclones have been recorded at the population level, with a decrease in population abundance following a storm. The findings of this literature review can help create a larger view of how scientists should prepare for the consequences of these natural disasters.

Book Initial Survey of the Impact of Tropical Cyclone Larry on Reefs and Islands in the Central Great Barrier Reef

Download or read book Initial Survey of the Impact of Tropical Cyclone Larry on Reefs and Islands in the Central Great Barrier Reef written by Andrew Chin and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 23 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tropical Cyclone Larry (TC Larry) crossed the Queensland coast on 20 March 2006, close to the town of Innisfail. TC Larry was a severe Category 5 cyclone and generated a 50km wide band of 'very destructive' winds between Cairns and Tully. To the north 'destructive' winds were experienced in a band between Cairns and Cape Tribulation. To the south 'destructive' winds were experienced between Tully and the Hinchinbrook/Cardwell region. To assess the impact of TC Larry, the Research and Monitoring Coordination Unit inspected eight reefs between Townsville and Cairns (between 17o and 19o South). This included surveying six reefs primarily for Cyclone impacts, and an additional two reefs as part of the on-going Coral Bleaching Response Programme. These reefs lie perpendicular to TC Larry's track and represent exposure to a variety of wind strengths.

Book excerpt: This original book describes the behavior of tropical cyclones in the South Pacific. It investigates the broad range of disturbance effects these violent storms have on the physical environments of the islands that lie in their path and the people who live on them. It is the first book to link these two themes – the characteristics of cyclones and their landscape impacts. Examples and illustrations are drawn widely from across the region, resulting in a highly readable volume.

Book Documenting Hurricane Impacts on Coral Reefs Using Two Dimensional Video Mosaic Technology

Download or read book Documenting Hurricane Impacts on Coral Reefs Using Two Dimensional Video Mosaic Technology written by and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 7 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Four hurricanes impacted the reefs of Florida in 2005. In this study, we evaluate the combined impacts of hurricanes Dennis, Katrina, Rita, and Wilma on a population of Acropora palmata using a newly developed video-mosaic methodology that provides a high-resolution, spatially accurate landscape view of the reef benthos. Storm damage to A. palmata was surprisingly limited; only 2 out of 19 colonies were removed from the study plot at Molasses Reef. The net tissue losses for those colonies that remained were only 10% and mean diameter of colonies decreased slightly from 88.4 to 79.6 cm. In contrast, the damage to the reef framework was more severe, and a large section (6 m in diameter) was dislodged, overturned, and transported to the bottom of the reef spur. The data presented here show that two-dimensional video-mosaic technology is well-suited to assess the impacts of physical disturbance on coral reefs and can be used to complement existing survey methodologies.

Book The Impact of Hurricane Lenny on Coral Reefs and Its Relevance to Pleistocene Reef Communities

Download or read book The Impact of Hurricane Lenny on Coral Reefs and Its Relevance to Pleistocene Reef Communities written by and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Storms such as hurricanes can dramatically impact a coral reef. In November 1999, Hurricane Lenny traveled an unusual west to east path across the central Caribbean approximately 480 kilometers north of the island of Curacao. Reef damage surveys at 33 sites conducted just months after the storm documented occurrences of toppling, fragmentation, tissue damage, bleaching, and smothering due to the storm. Several factors influenced the degree of damage experienced by the reef, including the trend of the shoreline, coral growth form, colony size, and water depth. Curacao's location outside of the major hurricane belt and well south of the track of Hurricane Lenny shows that rarely disturbed reefs can incur significant damage by storm-generated waves that travel across a great distance. Pleistocene reef communities on the island preserve the same species of corals and reef zonation present on many modern reefs throughout the Caribbean. Transects conducted along the fossil reefs show that different reef paleoenvironments (reef crest vs backreef) have different relative abundances of components. These different environments also preserve corals in the position of growth to differing extents. Many large coral colonies are preserved in growth position with the presence of few or no encrusting or boring organisms. These observations suggest a very rapid burial, possibly associated with a major regression while the corals were still alive. Although storm features on modern reefs, such as toppling and fragmentation, may potentially be preserved in the Pleistocene reefs of Curacao, these features are difficult to differentiate from those that were produced by other natural day-to-day processes such as bioerosion and processes involved with a rapid regression, including large-scale movement of sands from nearshore beaches or dunes.

Book Climate Change and Impacts in the Pacific

Download or read book Climate Change and Impacts in the Pacific written by Lalit Kumar and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-01-31 with total page 552 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited volume addresses the impacts of climate change on Pacific islands, and presents databases and indexes for assessing and adapting to island vulnerabilities. By analyzing susceptibility variables, developing comprehensive vulnerability indexes, and applying GIS techniques, the book's authors demonstrate the particular issues presented by climate change in the islands of the Pacific region, and how these issues may be managed to preserve and improve biodiversity and human livelihoods. The book first introduces the issues specific to island communities, such as high emissions impacts, and discusses the importance of the lithological traits of Pacific islands and how these physical factors relate to climate change impacts. From here, the book aims to analyze the various vulnerabilities of different island sectors, and to formulate a susceptibility index from these variables to be used by government and planning agencies for relief prioritization. Such variables include tropical cyclones, built infrastructures, proximity to coastal areas, agriculture, fisheries and marine resources, groundwater availability, biodiversity, and economic impacts on industries such as tourism. Through the categorization and indexing of these variables, human and physical adaptation measures are proposed, and support solutions are offered to aid the inhabitants of affected island countries. This book is intended for policy makers, academics, and climate change researchers, particularly those dealing with climate change impacts on small islands.

Book Inshore Fisheries Management

Download or read book Inshore Fisheries Management written by David Symes and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2001-12-31 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite their importance in terms of employment and income generation, inshore fisheries have been a neglected area of study. The review of the common fisheries policy, especially in the light of the need to re-examine the derogation which reserves access to the inshore zone to coastal state vessels, provides an opportunity to redress the balance. With contributions from leading authorities on fisheries management, the book takes an in-depth look at seven European countries, examining the basis for the definition of inshore fisheries, evaluating their status, and describing the salient characteristics of their management. The national studies form the basis for cross-cultural analyses of the social organisation, cultural norms, economic objectives, and institutional structures of inshore fisheries in Europe. Finally, a number of key issues relating to the future of inshore fisheries management in a more integrated approach are examined. Overall the volume reaffirms the invaluable role played by inshore fisheries in the local and regional economies of Europe's complex coastline.
