Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides comprehensive information on several dimensions of blue revolution in a structured form. Material provided in the book has been gathered from several relevant published sources and views expressed are based on practical field experience of the authors. Blue revolution would be one of the big game changers for the Indian economy. The subject of sustainable development of fisheries sector being very vast, concerted efforts have been made to accommodate all the relevant elements. Very little reading material with proper analysis is currently available and this book is expected to bridge the gap and project way-forward to achieve sustainable development of fisheries and aquaculture in India under the blue revolution. The book is organised under 13 chapters covering wide ranging subjects that include fish production, processing, marketing, exports/imports of fishery products; ecolabelling; role of industry in promoting sustainability in fishing and aquaculture; sustainability issues in marine/inland fisheries/aquaculture; and fisheries regulations and legislations. Information has been provided on Sustainable Development Goals(SDGs) particularly SDG 14 (Life Below Water); components of blue economy; Government of India fisheries development initiatives; and executive summary of recently launched PMMSY. Emerging plant and cell-based seafood segment; overall impacts of climate change; and impact of recent pandemic COVID-19 on fisheries and aquaculture are discussed under separate chapters. Book Technological Change and the Development of Marine Fishing Industry in India

Download or read book Technological Change and the Development of Marine Fishing Industry in India written by Ramakrishnan Korakandy and published by Daya Books. This book was released on 1994 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fisheries management in the developing world is concerned largely with the problem of creating a commercial or industrial fishery sector. Fisheries development in India was initiated through a programme of planned technological change. The state of Kerala which is still the primary producer and exporter of marine fish from the country has been the focal point of this developmental strategy. Fisheries development in the state has not been studied in much detail in the past. This book born out of an earlier doctoral study is a vast treatise on the subject of technological change and economic development. It gives a blend of the economic theory of technological change and the process of fisheries development in the state of Kerala. The book, starting with a brief introductory chapter, enunciates the global literature on fisheries development, the conceptual framework and methodology of the study, the state of the art of the traditional sector of the primary marine fishing industry of Kerala, the process of technological change in the marine fishing industry of the state, their indicators, effects and characteristics, all in good succession and in great detail. The book in its core argues that the development achieved by the industry was limited and it was restricted by the limited growth strategy followed by the state. A concluding chapter of this book gives an array of findings of the study and offers valuable suggestions to the policy maker. With a post-script, it keeps the reader abreast of the developments in the industry. The book, apart from its theoretical underpinning, is rich with empirical data garnered from various sources. It also offers an excellent bibliography on the subject. Its language is smooth. It should be appealing to students, teachers, scholars and policy makers everywhere. Contents Chapter 1: Introduction; Chapter 2: Economic Theory and Primary Marine Fishing Industry- A Review of Literature; Chapter 3: Conceptual Framework and Methodology; Chapter 4: Primary Marine Fishing Industry- The Traditional Sector; Chapter 5: Technological Change in the Primary Marine Fishing Industry- The Process; Chapter 6: Indicators of Technological Change; Chapter 7: Characteristics of Technological Change; Chapter 8: Summary of Findings, Conclusions and Recommendations.

Book Climate Change Impacts on Ocean and Coastal Law

Download or read book Climate Change Impacts on Ocean and Coastal Law written by Randall Abate and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 748 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ocean and coastal law has grown rapidly in the past three decades as a specialty area within natural resources law and environmental law. The protection of oceans has received increased attention in the past decade because of sea-level rise, ocean acidification, the global overfishing crisis, widespread depletion of marine biodiversity such as marine mammals and coral reefs, and marine pollution. Paralleling the growth of ocean and coastal law, climate change regulation has emerged as a focus of international environmental diplomacy, and has gained increased attention in the wake of disturbing and abrupt climate change related impacts throughout the world that have profound implications for ocean and coastal regulation and marine resources. Climate Change Impacts on Ocean and Coastal Law effectively unites these two worlds. It raises important questions about whether and how ocean and coastal law will respond to the regulatory challenges that climate change presents to resources in the oceans and coasts of the U.S. and the world. This comprehensive work assembles the insights of global experts from academia and major NGOs (e.g., Center for International Environmental Law, Ocean Conservancy, and Environmental Law Institute) to address regulatory challenges from the perspectives of U.S. law, foreign domestic law, and international law.

Book India Marine Fisheries

Download or read book India Marine Fisheries written by Weltbank and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study represents a collaborative initiative by the World Bank and the Department of Animal Husbandry, Dairying and Fisheries Ministry of Agriculture, Government of India, to review the marine fisheries sub-sector, within a broader sector that also includes aquaculture and inland fisheries. The policy note provides a major step forward in understanding current issues and future opportunities facing the marine fisheries sub-sector. The marine fishing sub-sector accounts for approximately one percent of national Gross Domestic Product (GDP), but forms an important component of the rural coastal economy, generating income, employment, livelihoods, and food security for an estimated 3.52 million people along the 8,118 km Indian coastline, who depend on fishing for their livelihoods. The study represents an initial analytical review of the Indian marine sub-sector with special emphasis on inshore waters, which faces the greatest challenges for management and sustainable development. The main objectives of the study were to: a) appraise the general structure, conduct and performance of the marine fisheries sub-sector in India with particular focus on the role that marine fishery plays in rural livelihoods for coastal communities; b) identify the main constraints in the marine sub-sector that are impacting on biological sustainability and economically healthy fisheries; c) draw on national and international experience to recommend alternative policy approaches and strategies to address these issues; and d) inform the Government of India during subsequent consultations with key stakeholders about long-term transformations towards better sub-sector performance.

Book Fisheries Exploitation in the Indian Ocean

Download or read book Fisheries Exploitation in the Indian Ocean written by Dennis Rumley and published by Institute of Southeast Asian Studies. This book was released on 2009 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book aims to further the debate on the impacts of fisheries policies in the Indian Ocean Region in order to facilitate a new regional policy direction. A key argument of the volume is that ecologically sustainable and socially just development and management of Indian Ocean fisheries require a paradigm shift in the perceptions and policies of major stakeholders. A central policy challenge is to identify a collective regional interest for fisheries and accordingly the development of integrated management policies that link ecology and society and which incorporate individuals, communities, agencies, states and regimes into a holistic cooperative endeavour. Successful ocean governance therefore requires greater inter-state and inter-agency consultation and cooperation, an improvement in linking national initiatives to local action, increased participation of local government and local communities and the enhancement of local capability. In order to achieve this overall goal requires either the enhancement of existing regional institutions or the creation of a new regional body. Book Developing India s Strategic Response to the Global Debate on Fisheries Subsidies CMA Publication No 236

Download or read book Developing India s Strategic Response to the Global Debate on Fisheries Subsidies CMA Publication No 236 written by Samar K Datta and published by Allied Publishers. This book was released on 2012-01-30 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The weak property rights regime governing the world's marine resources as well as the wide-spread large scale subsidization of the fisheries industry has led to serious depletion of global fish stocks. Against this backdrop, taking cognizance of developing country goals and concerns, the Fourth Ministerial Conference of the WTO held in Doha in 2001 mandated that negotiations over fisheries subsidies, formerly subject to the disciplines of the Agreement on Subsidies and Countervailing Measures, be completed by 2005. In view of this development, a country like India with its vast and versatile fisheries resources has to take stock of the state of its fisheries sector, and develop a strategic response to the global debate on fisheries subsidies. This book aims to initiate that process. It begins by providing an overview of the current state of subsidization of the fisheries sector, both domestic and international, under various alternate definitions of fisheries subsidies. It then focuses on the domestic scenario, highlighting the Indian experience with fisheries subsidies and property rights regimes across both inland and marine sectors via the case method, and investigates the necessity and sufficiency of subsidies vis-à-vis an appropriate property rights framework in developing the domestic fisheries sector and resource base in a sustainable manner. Attention is then turned to the international scenario, with a review of selected international case studies which can inform domestic subsidy and property rights issues. This is followed by an analysis of the country submissions of the various major fishing nations in order to identify India's natural allies and competitors in international negotiations. The concluding chapter brings the pieces together. It first outlines a program of reforms to rectify the deficiencies in the existing domestic property rights and fisheries subsidy regimes, on the basis of intensive interactions with all sectoral stakeholders. Subsequently, it suggests negotiating strategies for India in forthcoming WTO meetings. An epilogue sums up recent developments and issues.

Book Fisheries Development and Management in India 1785 1986

Download or read book Fisheries Development and Management in India 1785 1986 written by Nune Subba Rao and published by Northern Book Centre. This book was released on 1989 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fisheries play an important role in the economy of nations bordering the sea and this is especially true in a populous country like India where a large majority continues to live below the poverty line. Sea fishing has been an occupation with the coastal people of India since time immemorial forming an integral part of the maritime heritage. Machanisation has been introduced into the marine fishing with a view to exploit the fisheries potential all along the Indian coastline of 6,500 km by overcoming the deficiencies of the centuries old traditional fishing technology and to augment fish production with a higher fishing effort and also to raise the income levels and living standards of fishermen. The present book, based on the author’s doctoral dissertation, made a bold and pioneering attempt to evaluate the costs and earnings of mechanised and traditional boats for determining their relative operational efficiency and to examine intensively the effects of mechanisation on employment, income levels, consumption pattern and levels of living of fishermen and their social implications. While analysing the merits of the new fishing technology and also the reactions of different groups of fishermen to mechanisation, he spotlights the shortsightedness in the implementation of the programme of mechanisation resulting in a host of negative effects which have implications and also sets forth the valuable lessons which Indian experiences have to offer to the densely populated littoral nations in the Third World. To ensure enduring benefits to the vast majority of marine fishermen, the thesis underscores, among numerous other remedies the need for the provision of an intermediary technology, the need for the institutional support and marketing network and the need for the management of fisheries resources. It also calls for the policies to bring about socio-economic development of the fishing community on par with the rest of the society. All in all, a genuine contribution to knowledge of `grassroots' situations that will have enduring value and that can be useful in both academic and policy-formation circles.
