The authors of the CHESS report summarized their findings for the impact of sulfur oxides on chronic respiratory disease as follows: the relative contribution of various air pollutants, especially sulfur dioxide, total suspended particulates and suspended sulfates, to observed disease frequencies; the importance of intervening influences, such as occupational exposure, socioeconomic status, residential mobility and cigarette smoking; the association between chronic disease prevalence and current vs. past pollutant exposures; and the precise pollutant threshold for excess disease in exposed communities. A preliminary attempt to evaluate the impact of these factors is presented.
