Book Impact of Sulfur Oxide Pollution on Chronic Respiratory Disease

Download or read book Impact of Sulfur Oxide Pollution on Chronic Respiratory Disease written by and published by . This book was released on 1976 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The recent CHESS publication, Health Consequences of Sulfur Oxide, contains the most ambitious set of studies to date on the effects of some common ambient air pollutants on human health. The authors of the CHESS report summarized their findings for the impact of sulfur oxides on chronic respiratory disease as follows: the relative contribution of various air pollutants, especially sulfur dioxide, total suspended particulates and suspended sulfates, to observed disease frequencies; the importance of intervening influences, such as occupational exposure, socioeconomic status, residential mobility and cigarette smoking; the association between chronic disease prevalence and current vs. past pollutant exposures; and the precise pollutant threshold for excess disease in exposed communities. A preliminary attempt to evaluate the impact of these factors is presented.

Book WHO Guidelines for Indoor Air Quality

Download or read book WHO Guidelines for Indoor Air Quality written by and published by World Health Organization. This book was released on 2010 with total page 488 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents WHO guidelines for the protection of public health from risks due to a number of chemicals commonly present in indoor air. The substances considered in this review, i.e. benzene, carbon monoxide, formaldehyde, naphthalene, nitrogen dioxide, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (especially benzo[a]pyrene), radon, trichloroethylene and tetrachloroethylene, have indoor sources, are known in respect of their hazardousness to health and are often found indoors in concentrations of health concern. The guidelines are targeted at public health professionals involved in preventing health risks of environmental exposures, as well as specialists and authorities involved in the design and use of buildings, indoor materials and products. They provide a scientific basis for legally enforceable standards.

Book Environmental Factors in Respiratory Disease

Download or read book Environmental Factors in Respiratory Disease written by Douglas H. K. Lee and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-09-25 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Environmental Factors in Respiratory Disease provides an overview of the state of knowledge on the role of environmental factors in respiratory disease. The book opens with a discussion of some trends and developments which bear on concerns with respiratory disease and the environment. This is followed by separate chapters on pulmonary anatomy and physiology as it relates to the problem of environmental factors in respiratory disease; various tracheobronchial responses to insult; the response of alveoli of the lung to damaging agents; and effects of chronic respiratory disease on lung and heart functions. Subsequent chapters deal with environmental pollutants, their routes of transport, and impact on lung function; specific reactions of the lung that can be attributed to a particular material or agent; host defense mechanisms in the lung; and interactions of infectious diseases and air pollutants. This text will be helpful to those who need to know the state of current knowledge on the health significance of environmental factors in respiratory disease but who do not have the time to pursue the detailed literature or to seek a compilation directed to their special needs.

Book Health Effects of Ambient Air Pollution

Download or read book Health Effects of Ambient Air Pollution written by Jane Q. Koenig and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Health Effects of Ambient Air Pollution provides the reader with an overview of the health effects of air pollution in human subjects. The majority of the book is devoted to the discussion of the health effects of common widespread air pollutants regulated by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency through national ambient air quality standards. The book reviews the sources and fate of common air pollutants in ambient air and researches the adverse effects of these outdoor and indoor air pollutants in `in vivo' cell systems, animals, and humans. Research for the book was conducted in controlled laboratory studies and epidemiologic studies. Special emphasis throughout Health Effects of Ambient Air Pollution is placed on the effects of air pollution in subjects with asthma.

Book WHO global air quality guidelines

Download or read book WHO global air quality guidelines written by Weltgesundheitsorganisation and published by World Health Organization. This book was released on 2021-09-07 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The main objective of these updated global guidelines is to offer health-based air quality guideline levels, expressed as long-term or short-term concentrations for six key air pollutants: PM2.5, PM10, ozone, nitrogen dioxide, sulfur dioxide and carbon monoxide. In addition, the guidelines provide interim targets to guide reduction efforts of these pollutants, as well as good practice statements for the management of certain types of PM (i.e., black carbon/elemental carbon, ultrafine particles, particles originating from sand and duststorms). These guidelines are not legally binding standards; however, they provide WHO Member States with an evidence-informed tool, which they can use to inform legislation and policy. Ultimately, the goal of these guidelines is to help reduce levels of air pollutants in order to decrease the enormous health burden resulting from the exposure to air pollution worldwide.
