Book Technology Adaptation and Exports

Download or read book Technology Adaptation and Exports written by Vandana Chandra and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2006-01-01 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The literature on technological change and growth has mainly used econometric models to establish that factors such as the degree of openness, skills, research and development expenditures, number of patents etc. are critical determinants of innovation and its effect on growth. However, this approach fails to explain the role of institutions and policies that created the environment for innovation. Using 10 case studies from developing countries, this book examines how governments fostered technological adaptation through public-private partnerships to develop world-class exporters in high-growth, non-traditional industries.

Book Maize in Thailand production systems constraints and research priorities

Download or read book Maize in Thailand production systems constraints and research priorities written by and published by CIMMYT. This book was released on 2004 with total page 46 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Maize is one of five major crops grown in the uplands of Thailand, along with rice, cassava, sugar cane, and rubber trees. Government-promoted crop diversification, increased population growth, improved transportation networks, inter national trade, expansion of upland farming areas, and increased demand for grains from the domestic livestock and poultry industry stimulated Thailand’s maize production beginning in the 1980s. However, Thailand’s domestic maize supply is currently not sufficient to meet the needs of its in-country demands, and small quantities have to be imported. This study characterized the social and biophysical maize production environment of Thailand; examined its response to increasing maize demand; determined constraints to future productivity growth; indicated the potential environmental consequences, and examined the options available for promoting sustainable growth in maize production.

Book Differential Treatment in International Environmental Law

Download or read book Differential Treatment in International Environmental Law written by Philippe Cullet and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-03-02 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a comprehensive study of differential treatment for developing countries in international environmental law. It offers a compelling analysis of the legal dimension of the relationship between developed and developing countries in the environmental field and beyond. It first critically examines the principle of legal equality of states and then explores the conceptual framework behind the notion of differential treatment in international law and its relevance in bringing about substantive equality. The book examines the development of differentiation in international environmental law, considers its application in various environmental treaties and evaluates the legal status of existing differential norms. It also examines the contribution of differentiation to the implementation of environmental treaties and the extent to which differential treatment fosters the decentralization of international environmental policy making. It is an indispensable resource for all actors involved in environmental law and policy making, scholars and students.

Book Recent Advances in Genetics and Breeding of Major Staple Food Crops

Download or read book Recent Advances in Genetics and Breeding of Major Staple Food Crops written by Joong Hyoun Chin and published by MDPI. This book was released on 2021-08-31 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To meet the global food demand of an increasing population, food production has to be increased by 60% by 2050. The main production constraints, such as climate change, biotic stresses, abiotic stresses, soil nutrition deficiency problems, problematic soils, etc., have to be addressed on an urgent basis. More than 50% of human calories are from three major cereals: rice, wheat, and maize. The harnessing of genetic diversity by novel allele mining assisted by recent advances in biotechnological and bioinformatics tools will enhance the utilization of the hidden treasures in the gene bank. Technological advances in plant breeding will provide some solutions for the biofortification, stress resistance, yield potential, and quality improvement in staple crops. The elucidation of the genetic, physiological, and molecular basis of useful traits and the improvement of the improved donors containing multiple traits are key activities for variety development. High-throughput genotyping systems assisted by bioinformatics and data science provide efficient and easy tools for geneticists and breeders. Recently, new breeding techniques applied in some food crops have become game-changers in the global food crop market. With this background, we invited 18 eminent researchers working on food crops from across the world to contribute their high-quality original research manuscripts. The research studies covered modern food crop genetics and breeding: plant molecular systems focusing to food crops; plant genetic diversity—QTL and gene identification utilizing high-throughput genotyping systems and their validation; new breeding techniques in food crops—targeted mutagenesis, genome editing, etc.; abiotic and biotic stresses—QTL/gene identification and their molecular physiology; plant nutrition, grain quality improvement, and yield enhancement.
