Book The Impact of Post 9 11 Visa Policies on Travel to the United States

Download or read book The Impact of Post 9 11 Visa Policies on Travel to the United States written by Brent Neiman and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2015-01-01 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper examines the impact of post-9/11 changes in visa and security policy on business and leisure travel to the United States. American businesses, tourism industry representatives, and politicians pointed to changes in visa policies as being responsible for a sharp decline in short-term visitors following the September 11 attacks. Several foreign governments likewise complained that visa requirements and other security measures were making it difficult for their citizens to travel to the United States. Using an empirical model which distinguishes the impact of visa policy from economic and country-specific factors, we find that changes in visa policy in the aftermath of 9/11 were not important contributors to the decrease in travel to the United States. Rather, the reduction in entries was largest among travelers who were not required to obtain a visa.

Book excerpt: This report describes for the first time the totality and evolution since the mid-1980s of the current-day immigration enforcement machinery. The report's key findings demonstrate that the nation has reached an historical turning point in meeting long-standing immigration enforcement challenges. The question is no longer whether the government is willing and able to enforce the nation's immigration laws, but how enforcement resources and mandates can best be mobilized to control illegal immigration and ensure the integrity of the nation's immigration laws and traditions.

This book was released on 2007-11-10 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on a series of regional meetings on university campuses with officials from the national security community and academic research institutions, this report identifies specific actions that should be taken to maintain a thriving scientific research environment in an era of heightened security concerns. Actions include maintaining the open exchange of scientific information, fostering a productive environment for international scholars in the U.S., reexamining federal definitions of sensitive but unclassified research, and reviewing policies on deemed export controls. The federal government should establish a standing entity, preferably a Science and Security Commission, that would review policies regarding the exchange of information and the participation of foreign-born scientists and students in research.

Book Exploring the Tripod

Download or read book Exploring the Tripod written by Nalanda Roy and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2020-06-26 with total page 137 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Exploring the Tripod: Immigration, Security, and Economy in the Post-9/11 United States is an exploration of the changing relationship between immigration and security in the post-9/11 United States. While extensive research has been done about the effect of 9/11 in the US, whether the effect is related mostly to the socio-economic situation or not is largely ignored. The current problems facing the US are the new policies that deter future immigration, and in turn, affect the US economy. This study forces on the major changes taking place in the U.S. both in terms of national security, as well as economic downturn following 9/11 as well as the current Trump administration. When it comes to immigration before 9/11, security was not the overarching concern in the United States. The focus was on economic interest, skilled and unskilled labor, and family reunification. However, immediately after 9/11, security became indisputably prioritized. September 11 changed the way Americans started to look at security. Immigration continues to make significant contributions to the US economy, whether in terms of manual labor from Mexico and Central America or in terms of more skilled labor mainly from Asia. September 11, led to a thickening of the balance between economic needs and security needs in the United States. This research examines the swinging security-economic growth of the pendulum concerning integration policy.

Book A Study of the Impact of 9 11 on Content in Travel Magazines

Download or read book A Study of the Impact of 9 11 on Content in Travel Magazines written by Jennifer Curry and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study examines how the terrorist attacks that occurred on September 11, 2001, which dramatically impacted the travel and transportation industries in the United States, influenced content in travel magazines in the United States and the United Kingdom. A content analysis showed that, while there appeared to be little overall change, there were a number of smaller, subtler changes. The total number of advertisements and articles both decreased post 9/11. The number of articles that dealt with security issues increased post 9/11. There were a number of references to 9/11 itself, with a higher percentage and number of references in the U.S. magazines than the U.K. magazines. Although there was no overall shift in advertising types, the percentage of airline, ship and travel gear ads in all four magazines went down post 9/11, while the percentage of tourism ads increased. Furthermore, the percentage of special advertising sections increased post 9/11, while the percentage of 1/6 page ads decreased. These results suggest that 9/11 did influence both the content and advertisements in travel magazines. (Abstract shortened by UMI.).

This book was released on 2009 with total page 165 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Few issues on the American political agenda are more complex or divisive than immigration. There is no shortage of problems with current policies and practices, from the difficulties and delays that confront many legal immigrants to the large number of illegal immigrants living in the country. Moreover, few issues touch as many areas of U.S. domestic life and foreign policy. Immigration is a matter of homeland security and international competitiveness, as well as a deeply human issue central to the lives of millions of individuals and families. It cuts to the heart of questions of citizenship and American identity and plays a large role in shaping both America's reality and its image in the world. Immigration's emergence as a foreign policy issue coincides with the increasing reach of globalization. Not only must countries today compete to attract and retain talented people from around the world, but the view of the United States as a place of unparalleled openness and opportunity is also crucial to the maintenance of American leadership. There is a consensus that current policy is not serving the United States well on any of these fronts. Yet agreement on reform has proved elusive. The goal of the Independent Task Force on U.S. Immigration Policy was to examine this complex issue and craft a nuanced strategy for reforming immigration policies and practices.

Book The Impact of U S Visa Policies

Download or read book The Impact of U S Visa Policies written by and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 23 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Changes brought about in the aftermath of 9/11 have had, and will continue to have, a profound impact on U.S. society. Nowhere is this more apparent, perhaps, than in America's visa policies and their effects on nations and individuals around the world. Many leaders in the Arab world today, as a result of early exposure to the United States, have an affinity for the USA, respect for American institutions, and an appreciation for the way business is done in the United States. However, the next generation of Arab leaders, particularly those who are being denied an opportunity to studying the USA, will lack this appreciation for America. In the immediate aftermath of 9/11, many companies and sectors were adversely affected, particularly those that depend on foreign buyers and investors coming to the United States. In the three years since September 2001, a significant percentage of the most affected companies concluded that this difficult situation will not improve anytime soon and they changed the way they do business: diversifying products and services, opening offices in overseas markets, and affiliating with foreign entities in order to capture business that formerly came to the United States.
