Book Environmental Impacts Of Land Use In Rural Regions The Development Validation And Application Of Model Tools For Management And Policy Analysis

Download or read book Environmental Impacts Of Land Use In Rural Regions The Development Validation And Application Of Model Tools For Management And Policy Analysis written by Piet Groenendijk and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1999-03-03 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The concern over groundwater contamination has focused attention on the processes that influence the fate of chemicals in soil water systems. A major concern of groundwater contamination is the passage of these chemcials through the unsaturated zone and the relatively thin cover layers overlying the aquifers. Pollution due to diffuse sources is probably the most difficult to model. This is because the loads are usually non-homogeneous and they are also governed by spatially and temporally non-homogeneous, but dynamic, processes of chemical and biochemical phenomena. In this book, the estimation techniques and transfer functions of required input data from existing databases in geographic information systems are provided. Spatially variable input data, such as the type of soil, hydrological conditions, intensity of land use and atmospheric deposit of pollutants, are derived from basic land and climate characteristics. A model for the evaluation of land use and water management is also described. In addition, examples of field and regional studies on water management and policy analysis are provided.

Book Agricultural Use of Groundwater

Download or read book Agricultural Use of Groundwater written by Cesare Dosi and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Groundwater is endangered and polluted in several ways. Conservation and better management of this invisible resource should be a key ingredient of sustainable water policies. This is especially true in areas, such as many Mediterranean regions, which are already exposed to scarcity problems and which are likely to experience increasing competition between freshwater uses and users. Agriculture is an important user of groundwater not only in terms of abstractions, but also in terms of generation and release of pollutants. Agricultural policies, traditionally directed towards other objectives, are beginning to pay more attention to environmental considerations. However more effective initiatives are required to reduce the pressure upon groundwater resources and to achieve a better integration between agricultural and environmental policies. This book has been developed from three workshops held as part of the EU Concerted Action SAGA, "Sustainable Agricultural Use of Aquifers in Southern Europe: Integration between Agricultural and Water Management Policies" (FAIR5-CT97-3673). The Concerted Action and the workshops brought together researchers working in different but complementary fields, in order to get a picture of the state-of-the art about interlinkages between agriculture and groundwater, as well a critical review of alternative regulatory approaches and policy instruments aimed at improving groundwater management.

Book Climate and Land Use Impacts on Natural and Artificial Systems

Download or read book Climate and Land Use Impacts on Natural and Artificial Systems written by Margarit Mircea Nistor and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2021-07-20 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Climate and Land Use Impacts on Natural and Artificial Systems: Mitigation and Adaptation provides in-depth information on the linkages between climate change and land use, how they are related, how land use is shifting over time, and the major global regions at risk for climate and land use changes. This comprehensive resource discusses climatic factors and processes that impact natural and artificial systems, as well as the relationship between climate change and both natural and man-made hazards. The book includes case studies and original maps to provide real-life examples of climate change and land use over regions around the globe. In addition, the book presents future perspectives on mitigation and adaptation of the climate change impact. - Summarizes current research on land use and climate change - Provides future perspectives on climate change using climate models - Includes case studies to provide real-life examples from various countries - Incorporates high level graphics, images, and maps to support reviews and case studies

Book A Comparative Assessment of Groundwater Ecosystems Under Irrigated Agriculture and Pasture

Download or read book A Comparative Assessment of Groundwater Ecosystems Under Irrigated Agriculture and Pasture written by John Little and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The impacts of intensive agriculture on underlying groundwater ecosystems are not yet fully understood, although agricultural practices are firmly implicated in the modification of stygofauna (invertebrate) and microbial populations in aquifers, primarily through changes in water quality associated with irrigated agriculture. The aim of this study was to determine how biological communities in groundwater vary with agricultural land use, and along environmental gradients. Biological and environmental samples were collected from groundwater under irrigated agricultural landscapes and pasture in the Condamine Catchment (QLD), and Gwydir Catchment (NSW). Bacterial populations were evaluated through the analysis of high-throughput 16S rDNA sequence data. The findings of this study did not support the hypothesis that stygofauna distributions vary with agricultural land-use. Molecular data did not support a relationship between microbial distributions and agricultural land-use. Microbial assemblages became more dissimilar with increasing geographic distance. Microbial and stygofauna distributions were poorly correlated with groundwater chemistry gradients. In summary, the influence of agriculture on stygofauna community structure is likey to be limited, since their distributions in the landscape are largely defined by physical limitations of the alluvial aquifer environment. In contrast, the influence of agricultural land-use on groundwater quality is likely to have a quantifiable bearing on microbial distributions, although evidence to support this hypothesis was not forthcoming from the environmental and molecular analysis here. To assess the hypothesis that microbial communities differ with agricultural land-use, further studies should use a metagenomic sequencing approach to estimate the relative abundance of microbes between sites.
