Book excerpt: Objective: Evaluate the impact of substituting canola meal (CM) with solvent extracted distillers grain with solubles (NovaMeal; NM, Brookings, SD) and urea as protein sources on milk parameters and economics in a commercial dairy herd. Materials and Methods: A total of 2,817 Holstein cows averaging 91 ± 49 DIM were enrolled to one of four dietary treatment groups: 1) primiparous control (C) with 3.1 kg CM, 0.058 kg urea; 2) primiparous treatment (NT) substituted CM with 2.1 kg NM, 0.10 kg urea; 3) multiparous C with 3.5 kg CM, 0.057 kg urea; and 4) multiparous NT substituted CM with 2.4 kg NM, 0.11 kg urea. Results and Discussion: Primiparous NT cattle that were on treatment for the entire length of the trial period (ETP) were lower in milk yield, ECM, milk fat yield, and milk protein yield and %. Multiparous NT ETP cows were lower in milk yield, milk protein yield and %, and higher for 3.5 % FCM, and milk fat yield and %. The C TMR were more expensive vs. NT, however, due to C being greater in average milk per cow/d, C was still more profitable vs. NT. Implications and Applications: Supplemented urea and NM, partially substituting CM as a protein source in a lactating dairy cattle TMR, had a positive impact on milk fat response, but was not as profitable with the assumptions of the economic model.

Here the focus is on energy-yielding nutrients and problems involved in evaluating them. Nonetheless in both volumes there is explicit recognition of the interdependence of energy and protein nutrition. I have not attempted to review comprehensively all the literature relating to ruminant energy nutrition and must apologize to colleagues whose work is not fully reported. Where possible tables and figures are taken from the studies of our group at the Rowett Research Institute since, if for no other reason, I am most familiar with these data. I have first considered the nutrition of the newborn and have stressed the role of behaviour 'in determining whether nutrients enter or bypass the rumen. The development of the rumen, the of anaerobic fermentation and the roles of various principles . species of rumen bacteria, protozoa and fungi in relation to different substrates, are summarized. This is followed by accounts of the factors affecting the utilization of different substrates and the v vi Preface absorption and metabolism of the end-products of fermentation and digestion, together with estimates of digestive capacity in various segments of the gut. The ruminant's requirements for energy-yielding nutrients is considered in relation to the per formance of various activities and to environmental conditions, particular attention being paid to the requirement for glucose precursors.

Book excerpt: The INRA Feeding System for Ruminants has been renewed to better address emerging challenges for animal nutrition: prevision of productive responses, product quality, animal health and emissions to the environment, in a larger extent of breeding contexts. The new system is mainly built from meta-analyses of large data bases, and modelling. The dietary supply model accounts for digestive interactions and flows of individual nutrients, so that feed values depend on the final ration. Animal requirements account for variability in metabolic efficiency. Various productive and non-productive animal responses to diets are quantified. This book presents the whole system for dairy and meat, large and small ruminant production, including specificities for tropical and Mediterranean areas. The first two sections present biological concepts and equations (with their field of application and statistical accuracy) used to predict intake (including at grazing) and nutrient supply (Section 1), animal’s requirements and multiple responses to diets (Section 2). They apply to net energy, metabolisable protein and amino acids, water, minerals and vitamins. Section 3 presents the use of concepts and equations in rationing with two purposes: (1) diet calculation for a given performance objective; and (2) prediction of the multiple responses of animal to diet changes. Section 4 displays the tables of feed values, and their prevision. All the equations and concepts are embedded in the fifth version of INRAtion® software for practical use.

Three pens of high producing multiparous Holstein cows were fed diets supplying 0, 35 or 70 g/kg SBM on a dry matter (DM) basis which replaced CM in a manner which held the proximate nutrient content of the diets constant. Book excerpt: Byproducts have played a major role in dairy nutrition by providing a cheaper protein and fiber source, while also utilizing a product that would otherwise be waste from the human perspective. Use of byproducts in the dairy industry should allow for continued and overall increases in production and efficiency of the dairy industry. Two of the more popular byproducts in the dairy industry today are dried distillers grains and solubles and canola meal. In the first experiment, 12 multiparous lactating Jersey cows were used evaluate the feeding value of dried distillers grains and solubles (DDGS) or canola meal. A replicated 4 × 4 Latin square design was used to compare four different dietary treatments. Treatments were composed of a control (CON) containing no byproducts, a treatment diet containing 10% (DM basis) reduced fat DDGS (pDDGS), a 10% DDGS treatment with an alternative distillers grains source (aDDGS), and a 10% canola meal (CanM) treatment. Results suggest that milk production can be maintained when feeding these byproducts. However, energy utilization differences are observed, specifically in gross energy, digestible energy, metabolizable energy and energy balance (Mcal/kg of DM). The alternative source of DDGS contained the greatest amount of gross energy, digestible energy, and metabolizable energy. The control and the alternative source of DDGS contained the greatest energy balance. Dry matter, organic matter, crude protein, and neutral detergent fiber digestibility differences were also observed between treatments, specifically the control and the DDGS treatments had the greatest digestibility. In the second experiment, a comparison of sample preparation methods of urine to be analyzed for energy content by bomb calorimetry was conducted. The two methods to be tested included a lyophilization and oven drying method. Results of this study suggest that there were significant differences in gross energy content and total urine energy depending on which sample preparation method was used. The lyophilization method resulted in a greater gross energy and total urine energy compared to oven drying method, creating a negative method difference.

Book excerpt: Protein-rich feedstuffs are used in dairy cow diets to increase overall dietary crude protein to maximize production. Traditionally, soybean meal (SBM) has been the primary protein source utilized in the United States. However, increasing knowledge of the positive production effects when substituting canola meal (CM) for other protein sources such as SBM is challenging this notion. While there is a long history of research demonstrating positive production effects during middle and late lactation, a scarcity of information exists for characterizing the effects of feeding CM during the close-up dry period and early lactation. The primary objective of the first experiment was to determine the effect of feeding isonitrogenous diets with SBM or CM as the primary protein source during the close-up dry period and early lactation on production measures in Holstein dairy cows. Furthermore, we sought to characterize the effects on temporal plasma hormone and metabolite concentrations, diet digestibility, and urinary excretion of purine derivatives. Dry matter intake increased pre- and postpartum for cows fed the diets with CM compared to SBM. Additionally, cows fed the diets with CM tended to increase milk yield and decreased milk urea nitrogen compared to cows fed the diets with SBM postpartum. Plasma triiodothyronine concentrations decreased pre- and postpartum for cows fed the diets with CM compared to SBM, corresponding to increased milk yield. Diet digestibility decreased pre- and postpartum and intestinal microbial N flow decreased postpartum for cows fed the diets with CM compared to SBM. The objective of the second experiment was to determine the effect of feeding isonitrogenous diets with SBM or CM as the primary protein source during mid-lactation on production and physiological measures in Holstein dairy cows determined to have high or low residual feed intake. Dry matter intake increased for cows fed the diet with CM compared to SBM. A diet × week interaction occurred for milk yield, with increased persistence for cows fed the diet with CM compared to SBM. Plasma triiodothyronine concentrations decreased and insulin concentrations increased for cows fed the diet with CM compared to SBM, corresponding to increased milk and milk protein yields.
