Book Impact of Heat Treatment and Oxidation of Carbon carbon Composites on Microstructure and Physical Properties

Download or read book Impact of Heat Treatment and Oxidation of Carbon carbon Composites on Microstructure and Physical Properties written by Sardar Sarwat Iqbal and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 488 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Carbon-carbon (C/C) composites are notable among engineering materials in aerospace and defense industries possessing excellent specific mechanical, thermal, frictional and wear properties. C/C maintain their properties at temperatures where most of the high end alloys give in, and maintain their dimensional stability at temperatures above 2000 °C. C/C is frequently used in aircraft and automotive industries as brake materials. However, frictional performance is dependent on various parameters: microstructure, fiber type, fiber orientation distribution, fiber/matrix interfacial bond, heat treatment, and oxidation. The present study in dissertation provides an insight into the impact of heat treatment, and oxidation on microstructure, mechanical and thermal properties. The study demonstrated a highly inhomogeneous nature of C/C, and sample size is a very important parameter in governing mechanical properties. Since, the slightest change in the dimension of samples could bring about a radically different outcome in terms of mechanical properties, and can hardly be representative of the bulk properties. Therefore, in order to obtain a good estimate of the bulk properties, the sample size must be comparable to the bulk material. The research nonetheless showed the impact of sample size in estimating the mechanical properties of bulk properties, which are highly significant after statistical analysis, and, therefore, it must be taken into account to understand the processing-structure-property-analysis relationships.

Book The Influence of Heat Treatment of the Matrix on the Physical Properties of Carbon Carbon Composites

Download or read book The Influence of Heat Treatment of the Matrix on the Physical Properties of Carbon Carbon Composites written by and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 13 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The effects of heat treatment on carbon-carbon composites have been studied on small composite samples by the use of X-ray diffraction, microstructural analysis (optical and scanning electron microscopy), density measurements, and sonic resonance for determining modulus. Modulus values for small samples of three-dimensional composites give good agreement with rule of mixtures estimates when the actual fiber volume fraction of the small sample is used. Heat treatment of pyrolyzed two-dimensional laminates shows initially a drastic in drop in modulus, corresponding to pyrolysis, decreasing density, and increasing porosity. In the graphitization temperature range, however, some increases are seen in modulus, accompanied by decreasing graphite c-spacing and increasing graphitization. Microstructural examination also shows evidence of increasing graphitization of the matrix, accompanying the increase of stiffness. Keywords: Carbon-carbon Composites, Carbon fiber, Dynamic modulus, Heat treatment.

Book Effects of Heat Treatment on Microstructure and Flexural Properties of Unidirectional Carbon Carbon Composites

Download or read book Effects of Heat Treatment on Microstructure and Flexural Properties of Unidirectional Carbon Carbon Composites written by Glen A. Binegar and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Microstructure and mechanical behavior of two unidirectional carbon -carbon (C-C) composite systems have been studied and correlated with their processing schedules. The composites were made with AMOCO T-50 PAN-based carbon fiber and one of two different carbon matrix precursors. The matrices are a state-of-the-art phenol-formaldehyde resin and a polyarylacetylene (PAA) resin obtained from cyclotrimerization of diethynyl benzene. The PAA resins have desirable properties as carbon precursors for C-C composites. The PAA matrix has a high carbon yield of 90% and exhibits less shrinkage during carbonization than the phenolic resin. The cyclotrimerized prepolymer also has good processing characteristics because of the molecular weight increase and reduced enthalpy of polymerization that result from the cyclotrimerization process. Analyses of scanning electron microscope micrographs revealed the appearance of anisotropic structure at heat treatment greater than or equal to 2400C. The development of this anisotropic structure appears to progress from an initially isotropic texture at 1200 and 1800 C to a graphite-like lamellar anisotropic structure at 2400 C and higher. This anisotropic structure is more pronounced in the PAA-derived matrix. The PAA-derived C-C composites exhibited a change in mode of three-point bend failure at heat treatments of 1800, 2400, and 2800 C. The failure of the 1200 C composites occurred by catastrophic fracture initiating at the tensile face above the loading bar. The other C-C composites failed more gracefully by a combination of accumulated damage due to bearing on the load bar, longitudinal shear, and isolated tensile failures. Keywords: Carbon carbon composites. (kr).

Book Design and Control of Structure of Advanced Carbon Materials for Enhanced Performance

Download or read book Design and Control of Structure of Advanced Carbon Materials for Enhanced Performance written by Brian Rand and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 355 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Carbon is unique in the range of structures and properties that are displayed by its material forms. The bonds in diamond, within the plane ofgraphite and in the fullerene molecules, C , are the strongest covalent bonds possible. This strong covalent bonding 60 leads to some exceptional intrinsic properties, examples ofwhich are: the greatest Young's modulus (in diamond, within the graphite plane and in single walled nanotubes) the highest room temperature thermal conductivity (in diamond and within the graphite plane) high hole mobility in doped diamond exceptional thermal stability ofthe structure in graphite It is because of the extreme thermal stability that such a wide range of materials is available. Atomic mobilities are low at all but the highest temperatures. Sintering, melting and casting ofcarbon are not feasible processing operations and carbon/graphite components are exclusively produced from the pyrolytic decomposition of organic precursors. The vast majority of engineering carbons have Sp2 type bonding and are related in some way to the structure of graphite. In the c-direction the bonding in graphite is of van der Waals character with the result that graphite is highly anisotropic in its properties and is probably unique in showing both the highest and lowest bond strengths in different directions in the same crystal.

Book Effect of Heat Treatment on Thermal Properties of Pitch Based and Pan Based Carbon Carbon Composites

Download or read book Effect of Heat Treatment on Thermal Properties of Pitch Based and Pan Based Carbon Carbon Composites written by and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thermal properties of two directional (2D) pitch-based carbon fiber with charred resin and three directional (3D) PAN-based carbon fiber with CVI carbon matrix C/C composite were investigated for non-heat treated (NHT) and heat treated (HT) materials through the thickness (z-direction). Heat treatment was performed at 1800, 2100 and 2400 oC for 1-hr in inert argon atmosphere. Thermal diffusivity, heat capacity and bulk density were measured to calculate thermal conductivity. Thermal diffusivity and conductivity was the highest for 3D C/C heat treated at maximum temperature with non-heat treated one exhibiting the lowest one. Similarly, 2D C/C heat treated at maximum temperature exhibited the highest thermal diffusivity and thermal conductivity. Polarized light microscopy (PLM) images of HTT C/C show a progressive improvement in microstructure when compared to NHT C/C. However, HTT 2D and 3D C/C composites exhibited extensive shrinkage of charred resin and CVI carbon matrix, respectively, from fibers resulting in intra and inter-bundles cracking when compared to NHT one. Raman spectroscopy and XRD results of NHT and HTT C/C indicated increased ordering of structure. A progressive improvement in thermal properties was observed with increased heat treatment temperatures.
