This book was released on 2013 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Significance of technology in a production process cannot be overemphasized. Using enterprise level data from 3rd MSME Census, the present paper looks into the variations in performance of MSMEs depending on their sources of technological know-how and estimates separate Cobb-Douglas production functions according to difference sources of technology: foreign, domestic collaborating company/unit and domestic R&D institutions/specialized agency/organization. Estimates have also been made separately for registered and unregistered units. The role of public sector R&D institutions has been found to be not so significant in bridging the technology gap. The study underscores the need for supplying better and effective technology to the MSMEs to help them tide over global competition.

Book excerpt: This study briefly gives a literature based review of how the micro small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) are affected by Globalization in India. Globalization is as absorbing term these days as modernization, development and change have been for the last century. The Indian MSMEs are lagging behind the rival firms due to Globalization. The huge competition and demand has drained firms in almost all kinds of businesses affecting drastically the major economies. Export competitiveness has decreased significantly for the Indian MSMEs. This problem needs an immediate attention to improve the status of MSMEs.Data Source and Methodology: The study is based on secondary data analysis. A Case on Footwear Industry in Agra cluster (Uttar Pradesh) has been analyzed. This Industry in India has crossed boundaries and got a good foothold in international production network yet it is still dominated by firms that supplies majorly to India. The study was done in regard to the size, composition, Production organization, labor market, skills, remuneration, marketing channels. Findings and Analysis: The lag in the technological know-how and reach, less margin in profit, inferior quality as compared to competitors has reduced business potential of Indian MSMEs. Though the Indian government has been making policies, launching schemes for the growth of MSMEs yet some important factors like tax policy, transaction cost, red tapism etc come out clearly for how the size of domestic firms are smaller than the exporting firms and what are the reasons which demotivate the MSMEs from going abroad.

Book Micro Small and Medium Enterprises MSMEs in India

Download or read book Micro Small and Medium Enterprises MSMEs in India written by Jaynal Uddin Ahmed and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) have emerged as a highly vibrant and dynamic sector of the Indian economy over the years. MSMEs not only play a crucial role in providing large employment opportunities, at comparatively lower capital cost than large industries, but also help in the industrialization of rural and backward areas, thereby reducing regional imbalances and assuring more equitable distribution of national income and wealth. MSMEs are complementary to large industries as ancillary units and contribute enormously to the socio-economic development of India. The sector is significant to the manufacturing output, employment, and exports of the country. However, MSMEs face a number of problems which have resulted in their retarded growth. Inadequate working capital, a shortage of trained personnel, and obsolete technology are the major barriers to the growth of MSMEs in India. This present volume provides an exhaustive analytical account of the functioning of MSMEs in India. It discusses their role in the country's economy, policies, and programs of the government to promote them, and the problems faced by them in the context of globalization and liberalization of world economies.

Book excerpt: The Global economy is blessed with a curse in disguise or more commonly known as “Integration”. The economic turmoil that sprouted out of the developed economies had its spill-over effect causing a major setback to the industries of emerging economies and has eroded values both financially and economically. However, it may be noted that although the recessionary effect dented the demand of all business segments but major headwinds were seen in Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME). Global recession jolted the balance sheets of every industry and business segment, MSME's, who are majorly into manufacturing of generic products got confronted with reduced demand and pricing pressure. The Government's stimulus packages for generating demand and growth couldn't suffice in insulating the MSME sector from the meltdown. MSME faces huge competition from its larger counterparts, who are having huge cash balance on their balance sheets, enjoys economies of scale, expertise in every field, use of high end technology, better product mix, fully integrated business operations and most of all accessibility to easy and cheap source of funding. MSME is considered as the core segment of every economy as it has to its credit of generating the highest rate of employment growth contributes a major share in industrial production and exports and most of all nurturing innovative entrepreneurial talent. Further, it ensures creation and growth of money supply in urban as well as rural areas, thereby improving the purchasing power and per-capital income of the people. Hence, proper measures should be taken to safeguard MSME's from any financial sickness, adverse variations in operational activity and hostile takeovers on account of plunge in overall demand.

Book Small and Medium Enterprises Across the Globe

Download or read book Small and Medium Enterprises Across the Globe written by Meghana Ayyagari and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2003 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper describes a new cross-country database on the importance of small and medium enterprises (SMEs). This database is unique in that it presents consistent and comparable information on the contribution of the SME sector to total employment and GDP across different countries. The dataset improves on existing publicly available datasets on several grounds. First, it extends coverage to a broader set of developing and industrial economies. Second, it provides information on the contribution of the SME sector using a uniform definition of SMEs across different countries, allowing for consistent cross-country comparisons. Third, while we follow the traditional definition of the SME sector as being part of the formal sector, the new database also includes the size of the SME sector relative to the informal sector. This paper describes the sources and the construction of the different indicators, presents descriptive statistics, and explores correlations with other socioeconomic variables. This paper--a product of Finance, Development Research Group--is part of a larger effort in the group to study SME-related issues.

Book Productivity Drag from Small and Medium Sized Enterprises in Japan

Download or read book Productivity Drag from Small and Medium Sized Enterprises in Japan written by Mariana Colacelli and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2019-07-01 with total page 21 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Productivity growth in Japan, as in most advanced economies, has moderated. This paper finds supportive evidence for the important role of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in explaining Japan’s modest productivity growth. Results show a substantial dispersion in firm-level productivity growth across sectors and even across firms within the same sector. SMEs, on average, exhibit lower productivity growth than non-SMEs in Japan, with smaller and older SMEs showing particularly low productivity growth. Estimates suggest that boosting productivity growth in all of the worst-performing SMEs could improve overall productivity growth by up to 1.8 percentage points. The SME credit guarantee system, SME financing constraints, demographic factors, and lack of intangible capital investment are discussed as contributors to the slow productivity growth of Japan’s small and old SMEs.
