Download or read book Impact of gender studies on English literature written by Kem Kuliyev and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2020-11-06 with total page 11 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2020 in the subject Literature - Comparative Literature, grade: 1.0, University of Bremen, language: English, abstract: Gender Studies have influenced not only our typical sociological, cultural and political pattern but also the narrative Theory and the understanding of traditional literary movements, which has led to the opening of traditional canons and the appearance of queer narratology. Kilian does an excellent job of pointing out essential terms such as heteronormativity or hegemonic masculinity and illustrating the effects these have had on individuals and our society. Furthermore, she clarifies the difference between sex and gender, indicating gender identity's performance based on gender markers. Familiarising oneself with all of these topics is vital if one would like to understand many social, cultural structures and the dominance of white heterosexual men in our society. After their publication, stories are re-read, forgotten, rediscovered through intertextual referencing, rewriting, or social debates. The basic process of memory in culture: Literary stories are never fully finished since they are continually actualized, discussed, and perceived anew. Firstly, different social actors have various views and perspectives on literary works, which are often influenced by societal changes.

Book Women s Voices and Genealogies in Literary Studies in English

Download or read book Women s Voices and Genealogies in Literary Studies in English written by Lilla Maria Crisafulli and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2019-05-21 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The volume investigates the ‘voice’ of women writers in the development of literary studies, and interrogates how scholars read and teach women’s literary texts. These issues are still crucial for women’s and gender studies today and deserve to be properly investigated and constantly updated. The various essays collected here examine how, and to what extent, ‘women’, across time and space, experimented with new genres or forms of expression in order to transform, question, resist or paradoxically consolidate gender discriminations and dominant ideologies: patriarchy, colonialism, slavery and racism, imperialism, religion, and (hetero)sexuality. Women’s Voices and Genealogies in Literary Studies in English is addressed to MA and PhD students in women’s and gender studies, and to all those students or young scholars who are interested in gender methodologies as a mode of practice in literary criticism and analysis. The authors of the volume share a long-standing experience in women’s and gender studies and in teaching English women’s literature, literary criticism and feminist methodologies and theories to students from different national origins.

Book Gender Bonds Gender Binds

Download or read book Gender Bonds Gender Binds written by Sara S. Poor and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2021-05-10 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While Gender Studies has made its mark on literary studies, much scholarship on the German Middle Ages is largely inaccessible to the Anglo-American audience. With gender at its core as a category of analysis, "Gender Bonds, Gender Binds"uniquely opens up medieval German material to English speakers. Recognizing the impact of Ann Marie Rasmussen’s Mothers and Daughters in Medieval German Literature, this transatlantic volume expands on questions introduced in her 1997 book and subsequent work. More than a mere tribute, the collection moves the debates forward in new directions: it examines how gender bonds together people, practices, texts, and interpretive traditions, while constraining and delimiting these things socially, ideologically, culturally, or historically. As the contributions demonstrate, a close, materially focused analysis produces complex results, not easily reduced to a platitude. The essays steer a firm course through the terrain of gender bonds and binds, many of which remain challenging in the present. Herein lies the broader reach of this volume, for understanding the longevity of patriarchy and its effects on human relations demonstrates how crucial the study of the past can be for us as a society today.

Book Gender in American Literature and Culture

Download or read book Gender in American Literature and Culture written by Jean M. Lutes and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2021-04-15 with total page 645 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gender in American Literature and Culture introduces readers to key developments in gender studies and American literary criticism. It offers nuanced readings of literary conventions and genres from early American writings to the present and moves beyond inflexible categories of masculinity and femininity that have reinforced misleading assumptions about public and private spaces, domesticity, individualism, and community. The book also demonstrates how rigid inscriptions of gender have perpetuated a legacy of violence and exclusion in the United States. Responding to a sense of 21st century cultural and political crisis, it illuminates the literary histories and cultural imaginaries that have set the stage for urgent contemporary debates.

Book Women s place in fiction How Virginia Woolf prefigured theories of the second wave of feminist writers

Download or read book Women s place in fiction How Virginia Woolf prefigured theories of the second wave of feminist writers written by Stefanie Dalvai and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2019-03-20 with total page 9 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Academic Paper from the year 2018 in the subject Women Studies / Gender Studies, grade: 1, University of Malta (English Studies), course: ENG 2063 Theories of Literature 3: Gender and Power, language: English, abstract: This paper analyzes to what extent Woolf’s essay A Room of One’s Own had an impact on second wave feminist writers. In the first part, three of the most important theories of Woolf’s essay are outlined. In the second part, both Simone De Beauvoir’s book The Second Sex as well as Helene Cixous’ essay The Laugh of the Medusa are analyzed by looking at whether Woolf’s three theories are or are not to be found in them. The last part looks at the extent to which these three feminists shared or did not share the same opinions and at how strong Woolf’s influence on them was. The English writer and feminist Virginia Woolf has had a tremendous impact on feminists to come. While other feminists of her time still concentrated on political rights, she was already announcing topics which prefigured some of the central preoccupations of later feminists, questioning the definition of femininity and the role that patriarchy had chosen for women.

Book But I do think it is their husbands faults If wives do fall A gender studies approach to William Shakespeare s The Tragedy of Othello the Moor of Venice

Download or read book But I do think it is their husbands faults If wives do fall A gender studies approach to William Shakespeare s The Tragedy of Othello the Moor of Venice written by Maximilian Bauer and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2015-12-11 with total page 17 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2013 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 1,3, University of Würzburg (Neuphilologisches Institut), course: Shakespeare’s Tragedies, language: English, abstract: This seminar paper is trying to display some designated motifs of gender studies and wants to give an overview of how such an approach to Shakespeare’s "Othello" can be made. Approaching Shakespeare’s works under the aspect of gender studies might not been originally intended by the author, however it provides multiple chances of interpretations and varieties of looking at the text. This is why in this seminar paper the literary theory of gender studies will be implemented on Shakespeare’s "The Tragedy of Othello, the Moor of Venice". Firstly a theoretical approach to Gender Studies is going to lead the way into this paper with an explanation of the main aspects of the Gender Studies theory and why it was chosen for this work. This will be followed by a focus on depictions of women and men and the gender related differences shown in the play. Furthermore a close look on the main characters namely Othello and Iago being the most important male characters and on the other hand Emilia and Desdemona as the main female characters in the play is taken. Main issues discussed are how the characters fit their role in society, female obedience and silence in contrast to male dominance and the need to act as. Also will these main themes be put in contrast with the plot and its development to see the impact of the characters and their gender related behaviour towards it. This will lead to a final analysis of how gender does influence the plot of the tragedy "Othello" and its outcome. The characters’ downfalls that in the end lead to the tragic resolution is being discussed from a view of gender studies theory. The analysis shows how gender influences Shakespeare’s drama in detail, which changes the characters go through with the progression of the plot and gives a short explanation of how these issues could be so fatal for the characters that die in the play.
