It sought answers to the following questions: resources that women accessed and controlled to ensure household food security, their attitudes and perceptions towards food security, and their level of participation in decision-making in food security. The study was guided by the Entitlement Approach/Theory). Target population was women farmers. Data was collected using qualitative and quantitative methods and was analysed. Main findings of the study were: resources necessary for household food production, land, oxen/plough, and farm equipment/implements were controlled by others other than the respondents. Women did not participate in decision-making issues on household food security. Women were the major labour providers for household food security. Recommendations: Government and development partners should empower women to realize household food security. There should be gender equality for equal participation in household food security.

It investigates how food security and gender inequity are conceptualized within interventions, assesses the impacts and outcomes of gender-responsive programs on food security and gender equity and addresses diverse approaches to gender research and practice that range from descriptive and analytical to strategic and transformative. The chapters draw on diverse theoretical perspectives, including transformative learning, feminist theory, deliberative democracy and technology adoption. As a result, they add important conceptual and empirical material to a growing literature on the challenges of gender equity in agricultural production. A unique feature of this book is the integration of both analytic and transformative approaches to understanding gender and food security. The analytic material shows how food security interventions enable women and men to meet the long-term nutritional needs of their households, and to enhance their economic position. The transformative chapters also document efforts to build durable and equitable relationships between men and women, addressing underlying social, cultural and economic causes of gender inequality. Taken together, these combined approaches enable women and men to reflect on gendered divisions of labor and resources related to food, and to reshape these divisions in ways which benefit families and communities. Book excerpt: Gender equality and empowerment of women is one of the effective ways to combat poverty, hunger and disease, and to stimulate development that is sustainable. The government of Kenya has made efforts to promote women's active involvement in all areas of societal development, in addition to ensuring that development is based on the contributions and concerns of both men and women. Despite these efforts, there are still clear gender inequalities in areas where both men and women's roles are visible, for example in health, education, agriculture and in some remunerated work. The aim of this paper is to assess the social and economic costs of gender discrimination; these costs are incurred in suboptimal resource allocation, in lost agricultural productivity and in deficient nutrition of household members ... This study argues that: with the same access and control of productive resources by both male and female headed households in a given geographical area, the levels of agricultural productivity and nutrition outcomes in male headed households should not be significantly different from those of female headed households. Any difference would be attributed to differences in access to resource caused by gender discrimination. The study analyses the food and nutrition situation in female and male headed households in relation to access to human capital, financial capital and land. The results show that human and financial capitals are the main resources that caused variations in both agricultural productivity and nutritional status in the two categories of households. Despite male headed households having access to more land than the female headed households, there was no significant difference in average area of land cultivated in the two categories of households. Economic cost analysis of unequal access to resources by gender is done using an econometric model.

It also includes ideas as to how GTAs could be taken to scale. The purpose of the Compendium is fourfold: (i) to take stock and draw lessons from experiences from existing practices of GTAs; (ii) to be a resource for agencies already working with GTAs to identify opportunities for strengthening their GTA work or to link up with complementary interventions; (iii) to provide guidance on how to apply GTAs in any organization or institution working for enhanced food security, nutrition and sustainable agriculture; and (iv) to raise awareness of and advocate for GTAs by showcasing examples of good practices or successful approaches that contribute to positive gender-related and non-gender-related changes towards food security, improved nutrition and sustainable agriculture and rural development.

International development agencies must strengthen the capacity of vulnerable households to anticipate, cope with and adapt to shocks and stressors. Despite the humanitarian and development scope of household resilience strengthening, most resilience academic research and policies focused on protracted crises countries. Moreover, too little attention has been paid to in-depth gender inequality analysis in household resilience to food insecurity, and household food security. This paper aims to (i) analyse the key drivers of household resilience to food insecurity and (ii) assess differences in resilience capacity and food security indexes across male and female-headed households, and identify key drivers of these differentials in national, urban, and rural areas in the Gambia, by using Gambian Integrated Household Surveys on consumption expenditure and poverty-level assessment 2015–2016.

Book excerpt: Achieving gender equality and women’s empowerment in food systems can result in greater food security and better nutrition, and in more just, resilient, and sustainable food systems for all. This paper uses a scoping review to assess the current evidence on pathways between gender equality, women’s empowerment, and food systems. The paper uses an adaptation of the food systems framework to organize the evidence and identify where evidence is strong, and where gaps remain. Results show strong evidence on women’s differing access to resources, shaped and reinforced by contextual social gender norms, and on links between women’s empowerment and maternal education and important outcomes, such as nutrition and dietary diversity. However, evidence is limited on issues such as gender considerations in food systems for women in urban areas and in aquaculture value chains, best practices and effective pathways for engaging men in the process of women’s empowerment in food systems, and for addressing issues related to migration, crises, and indigenous food systems. And while there are gender informed evaluation studies that examine the effectiveness of gender- and nutrition- sensitive agricultural programs, evidence to indicate the long-term sustainability of such impacts remains limited. The paper recommends keys areas for investment: improving women’s leadership and decision-making in food systems, promoting equal and positive gender norms, improving access to resources, and building cross-contextual research evidence on gender and food systems.

Book excerpt: The Country Gender Assessment (CGA) was commissioned by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) from October 2017 to February 2018 as a way to gauge Viet Nam’s progress in achieving gender equality in agriculture and the rural sector and as a mechanism to guide FAO’s strategic mission in Viet Nam. Its objective is to inform FAO country-level planning and programming in line with national development priorities and FAO’s mandate and strategic framework. The Assessment is also aimed at facilitating FAO’s contribution to the UN Country Team report on the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) with up-to date and objective information on the situation of rural women in the country. The methodology of the CGA included a desk review of policies and programmes on agriculture, food and nutrition security and gender equality, a quantitative analysis of national statistics, in-depth interviews with FAO Viet Nam partners and qualitative surveys and focus group discussions (FGDs) conducted in two provinces (Ninh Thuan and Lao Cai).

Book excerpt: New evidence this year corroborates the rise in world hunger observed in this report last year, sending a warning that more action is needed if we aspire to end world hunger and malnutrition in all its forms by 2030. Updated estimates show the number of people who suffer from hunger has been growing over the past three years, returning to prevailing levels from almost a decade ago. Although progress continues to be made in reducing child stunting, over 22 percent of children under five years of age are still affected. Other forms of malnutrition are also growing: adult obesity continues to increase in countries irrespective of their income levels, and many countries are coping with multiple forms of malnutrition at the same time – overweight and obesity, as well as anaemia in women, and child stunting and wasting.

This gender guidance note seeks to facilitate policy dialogue on how to best synchronize gender equality and women’s empowerment policy objectives and food security and nutrition ones, to enhance coordination between the two policy domains, and ultimately enable women on an equal basis with men to realize their potentials as key partners in improving food security and nutrition.

Book excerpt: This book is about the effects of AIDS on women and food security in Côte d'Ivoire, West Africa. AIDS is more than a health problem. Rural households and women in particular have to cope with the lack of labour in agriculture which threatens their food security. For the matrilineal Agni women land ownership appears to be an unexpected burden, rather than a safeguard from poverty. Culture matters, but not in similar ways everywhere. Matrilineal or patrilineal kinship organisation, gender inequality, and norms about sexual relationships very much influence the differences in Agni and migrant women's vulnerability to AIDS. African women are often seen as victims of AIDS. This study shows that women may also use their creativity and social networks to battle and to be resilient against the effects of the illness in their everyday household activities. Using a combination of quantitative statistical data and qualitative methods, this research questions the effectiveness of mainstream AIDS policy and interventions in Côte d'Ivoire. Victimising the poor does not help. Instead, multi-sector policy intervention can mitigate the social effects of AIDS by improving household food security and by changing cultural practices through local leaders who have historical legitimacy and power.

Book excerpt: "Women play essential roles in achieving food security, yet they are disproportionately affected by food insecurity, malnourishment, and poverty. There is a growing consensus that women's autonomy is positively related to food security. However, the evidence is inconsistent and the nature of the links between the two factors remains unclear, particularly among Indigenous women in Latin America. This dissertation begins by providing an overview of food insecurity in Colombia. Using data from the Gallup World Poll, we ascertain changes in the prevalence of food insecurity between 2016 and 2019; examine which population subgroups (urban women, rural women, urban men, and rural men) were most vulnerable; and assess which individual-level characteristics predicted food insecurity. Results show that food insecurity increased by 7 percent in Colombia from 2016 to 2019 (33% to 40%), with rural women consistently reporting the highest prevalence (50% in 2019). Results from logistic models confirm that income, unemployment, and lack of social support were significantly associated with food insecurity across years, while in 2019, gender, low education, and lack of autonomy were also significant factors. Drawing from this macro-level overview, we investigate the relationship between women's autonomy and food security among rural Indigenous women from Los Pastos ethnic group in Nariño, Colombia. Using Participatory Action Research methodologies, the subsequent analysis includes: 1) a qualitative assessment of how Los Pastos women define women's autonomy, 2) the identification of facilitators of and barriers to autonomy, and 3) an examination of how women's local understanding and experience of autonomy is related to food security. Findings show that participating women identify many contemporary conditions for autonomy--which are discussed within the development community and experienced by other women regardless of race, class, or gender--as important in their own definitions. These include issues related to independence, decision-making, capacity-building, mobility, violence, representation, and economic and resource control. Yet, they also stressed the importance of cultural and collective autonomy for their individual autonomy and emphasized the enduring impacts of colonization, which have been largely overlooked. Results reveal that economic, social, cultural, and political constraints affect women's autonomy, in turn threatening food security. Economically, constraints include the lack of remuneration for women's work, a lack of education, and restrictive gender roles, and discrimination in agriculture. Social constraints center around the inadequate recognition and valuation of women's work, gender stereotypical roles, and gender-based violence. Culturally, a lack of traditional knowledge transfer, a shift in the agricultural landscape, and environmental degradation were critical constraints. They also asserted that the dearth of political representation and participation of rural Indigenous women impacts food security and facilitates the legitimization and institutionalization of the constraints identified in other areas. These constraints were often interconnected and grounded in structural issues and discrimination rather than a lack of individual agency or motivation. We provide evidence of a worsening food security situation in Colombia and offer a nuanced understanding of women's central role in securing food security. Findings highlight the complexities linking food insecurity, gender inequality, discrimination, and poverty, while examining how intersectionality impacts these processes by recognizing women's perspectives--those of one of the most vulnerable and under-researched segments of the population - Indigenous women. The need to understand local experiences and recognize marginalized groups as critical actors when designing interventions to support women's autonomy and food security is underscored throughout"--
