Book Impact of Forestry Activity on the Economy of Canada and Its Provinces

Download or read book Impact of Forestry Activity on the Economy of Canada and Its Provinces written by Romain Jacques and published by Economics Branch, Canadian Forestry Service. This book was released on 1988 with total page 46 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Study using Statistics Canada input-output models to estimate the economic activity generated by processing of the forest into consumer goods. The 1979 interprovincial model was used to estimate the impact of forestry activity in each of the provinces, while the 1980 national model was used to estimate the impact on Canada as a whole. The models helped estimate the impact of forestry activity on some 200 different sectors of the economy in output levels (dollars), jobs, and gross domestic product (in dollars). As well, the impact of forest produce exports is presented. A brief methodology is included.

Book Economic Impacts of Climate Change in Forest and Agriculture Sectors in Canada

Download or read book Economic Impacts of Climate Change in Forest and Agriculture Sectors in Canada written by Thomas Odhiambo Ochuodho and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Climate change could have significant economic impacts in regional economies. This dissertation has presented a comprehensive analysis of economic impacts assessment of climate change in both forest and agriculture sectors in Canada and by extension, US and rest of the world using computable general equilibrium (CGE) analysis. Specific contributions include: (i) estimating the potential economic impacts of climate change on Canada’s forests using single-region levels specification CGE models, and cost effectiveness of implementing adaptation strategies to mitigate the impacts; (ii) assessing long-term economy-wide economic impacts of climate change on forestry sector across Canada’s provinces and the territories, and potential differences associated with using single-region as opposed to multi-regional CGE modeling framework; (iii) assessing long-term economy-wide economic impacts of climate change on agricultural crop production across Canada’s provinces and the territories, and extent of regional aggregation differences using two global multi-regional CGE models; (iv) investigating the extent and nature of potential interactions of economic impacts of climate change between agriculture and forestry sectors in a simultaneous CGE modeling analysis. Key findings of these analyses include the following: (i) the physical and economic impacts of climate change in Canadian forests may be substantial and varied across Canada's regions, and adaptation activities to climate change could be supported on economic grounds ; (ii) that single-region CGE models produce more conservative economic impact estimates relative to a multi-regional model, (iii) regional disaggregation tended to better capture individual regional uniqueness in terms of economic size, structure, and trade patterns; and (iv) individual and additive sector analyses produced economic impact estimates that were often overly pessimistic (i.e., less positive or more negative) relative to those produced by the preferred, simultaneous sector analysis. The results of this study have greatly enhanced understanding of the various aspects of economic impacts of climate change in both agriculture and forest sectors. The knowledge generated from this research will help governments and their agencies, policy makers, and researchers working on climate change impact assessments using CGE models make more informed decisions as they strive to mitigate climate change impacts at various levels."-- Pages ii-iii.

Book Community Forestry in Canada

Download or read book Community Forestry in Canada written by Sara Teitelbaum and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2016-07-28 with total page 417 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent decades, community forestry has taken root across Canada. Locally run initiatives are lauded as welcome alternatives to large corporate and industrial logging practices, yet little research has been done to document their tangible outcomes or draw connections between their ideals of local control, community benefit, ecological stewardship, and economic diversification and the realities of community forestry practice. This book brings together the work of over twenty-five researchers to provide the first comparative and empirically rich portrait of community forestry policy and practice in Canada. Tackling all of the forestry regions from Newfoundland to British Columbia, it unearths the history of community forestry, revealing surprising regional differences linked to patterns of policy-making and cultural traditions. Case studies celebrate innovative practices in governance and ecological management while uncovering challenges related to government support and market access. The future of the sector is also considered, including the role of institutional reform, multiscale networks, and adaptive management strategies.

Book Forest Sector Socioeconomic Impact Model for Northern Ontario Communities

Download or read book Forest Sector Socioeconomic Impact Model for Northern Ontario Communities written by A. A. Kubursi and published by Sault Ste. Marie : Great Lakes Forestry Centre. This book was released on 1996 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Begins with a literature review on community economic development in general and on forestry-dependent communities. The literature is reviewed in the following terms: the financial market, traditional and non-traditional strategies for development, resource-dependent communities, and government roles and policies in economic development. The review is organised into topics including the role of entrepreneurship, urban community development in Canada, and local industrial development. The next sections examine selected measures of sustainable forestry and community development, and factors involved in northern Ontario community development. Finally, an input-output analytic model is presented for assessing impact on a community of expenditures on investment projects and other activities at the local and provincial level. The analysis is illustrated for a hypothetical case where the output of pulp and paper operations in Kapuskasing, Ontario is valued at 150 million. Economic impact results are supplemented by discussion of some general socio-economic indicators produced by the model.

Book Lost Initiatives

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “This thoroughly referenced book reveals the importance of the development of forest resources to Canadian social and economic existence. Rather than presenting just a compilation of facts and figures, the authors synthesize the information to make interesting observations. History is revealed as a series of interactive movements by various industrial, social, and political groups. ... Highly recommended for college and university collections that include forest history, forest policy, Canadian history, and conservation history.”–Choice “Lost Initiatives surveys Canadian forestry policy since the early nineteenth century, and particularly between the second American Forestry Congress, held in Montreal in 1882, and 1939. The authors achieve a Canada-wide perspective by including separate chapters on New Brunswick, Quebec, Ontario, and British Columbia, and offering an extensive account of federal forestry policy. The latter, which derives from archival research, is the most original of the book's contributions. . . Indeed, the book has considerable relevance to those interested in the development of professions in Canada. . . the book can be warmly recommended as a well-documented, genuinely national study that provides numerous points of departure and of context, whether for a comprehensive history of Canadian forests and forest policy or for analyses of parts of a very large subject. And the eloquent concluding chapter, on the last forty years of forest policy, could well serve as a call to arms even for those not persuaded that the previous chapters tell the real story of how we got here.”–The Canadian Historical Review
