Book Determinants of Ex Post and Ex Ante Credit Risk

Download or read book Determinants of Ex Post and Ex Ante Credit Risk written by Yaman Hajja and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Amid the credit expansion in Malaysia and for 19 commercial banks (11 foreign and 8 local) over 2002-2013, we utilize a novel panel-data model to investigate the role of charter value, moral hazard, managerial performance, income diversification, and macroeconomic environment as determinants of non-performing loans (NPLs) (ex post credit risk) and loan loss provisioning (LLP) (ex ante credit risk). We find a strong evidence that bank's charter value as an endogenous variable is disciplining both types of credit risk, especially for foreign banks. Increasing capital ratio increases credit risk. Better performance (higher return on equity) reduces credit risk. Higher inefficiency and operating leverage increase credit risk. Income diversification increases NPLs and LLP of local banks, and it reduces NPLs of foreign banks. Higher levels in GDP growth and money supply M1 growth (monetary growth), raise credit risk in banks. We provide a strong evidence that foreign direct investment reduces credit risk, especially for foreign banks. Policy implications are suggested in order to attain financial stability.

Book Nonperforming Loans in Sub Saharan Africa

Download or read book Nonperforming Loans in Sub Saharan Africa written by Hippolyte Fofack and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2005 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This paper investigates the leading causes of nonperforming loans during the economic and banking crises that affected a large number of countries in Sub-Saharan Africa in the 1990s. Empirical analysis shows a dramatic increase in these loans and extremely high credit risk, with significant differences between the CFA and non-CFA countries, and substantially higher financial costs for the latter sub-panel of countries. The results also highlight a strong causality between these loans and economic growth, real exchange rate appreciation, the real interest rate, net interest margins, and interbank loans consistent with the causality and econometric analysis, which reveal the significance of macroeconomic and microeconomic factors. The dramatic increase in these loans is largely driven by macroeconomic volatility and reflects the vulnerability of undiversified African economies, which remain heavily exposed to external shocks. Simulated results show that macroeconomic stability and economic growth are associated with a declining level of nonperforming loans; whereas adverse macroeconomic shocks coupled with higher cost of capital and lower interest margins are associated with a rising scope of nonperforming loans. These results are supported by long-term estimates of nonperforming loans derived from pseudo panel-based prediction models. "--World Bank web site.

Book How Risky Are Banks Risk Weighted Assets Evidence From the Financial Crisis

Download or read book How Risky Are Banks Risk Weighted Assets Evidence From the Financial Crisis written by Mr.Sonali Das and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2012-01-01 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We study how investors account for the riskiness of banks' risk-weighted assets (RWA) by examining the determinants of stock returns and market measures of risk. We find that banks with higher RWA had lower stock returns over the US and European crises. This relationship is weaker in Europe where banks can use Basel II internal risk models. For large banks, investors paid less attention to RWA and rewarded instead lower wholesale funding and better asset quality. RWA do not, in general, predict market measures of risk although there is evidence of a positive relationship before the US crisis which becomes negative afterwards.

Book How to Assess the Benefits of Nonperforming Loan Disposal in Sub Saharan Africa Using a Simple Analytical Framework

Download or read book How to Assess the Benefits of Nonperforming Loan Disposal in Sub Saharan Africa Using a Simple Analytical Framework written by Irina Bunda and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2021-06-08 with total page 23 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The coronavirus (COVID-19) crisis, which has hit financial systems across Africa, is likely to deteriorate banks’ balance sheets. The largest threat to banks pertains to their loan portfolios, since many borrowers have faced a sharp collapse in their income, and therefore have difficulty repaying their obligations as they come due. This could lead to a sharp increase in nonperforming loans (NPLs) in the short to medium term.

Book Problem Loans in the Caribbean Determinants Impact and Strategies for Resolution

Download or read book Problem Loans in the Caribbean Determinants Impact and Strategies for Resolution written by Ms.Kimberly Beaton and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2017-11-07 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The high level of nonperforming loans (NPLs) in the Caribbean has been, in large part, a legacy of the global financial crisis, but their persistence owes much to the weak economic recovery in the region, as well as to structural obstacles to their resolution. A comprehensive strategy is needed to address these impediments to sever the adverse feedback loops between weak economic activity and weak asset quality. This paper finds that NPLs are a drag on Caribbean growth and macro-financial links are strong: a deterioration in asset quality hinders bank lending and dampens economic activity, undermining, in turn, efforts to resolve problem loans. A multifaceted approach is needed, involving a combination of macro- economic policies to support growth and employment; strong supervisory frameworks to ensure macro-financial stability and create incentives for resolution; efforts to address informational gaps and deficiencies in insolvency and debt-enforcement frameworks; and development of markets for distressed loans. The institutional capacity constraints require coordination of reforms within the region and support from international organizations through capacity-building.
