These potential and expected impacts need to be better understood and quantified, hence providing a support basis for future recovery efforts. Secondly, the shutdown caused by COVID-19 has also been having a severe impact on teaching and research, especially –but not only – on matters related to sustainability. This may also open new opportunities (e.g. less travel, more Internet-based learning), which should be explored further, especially in the case of future pandemics, a scenario which cannot be excluded. It was soon identified as a novel coronavirus, later named SARS-CoV-2. The virus quickly spread across borders, leading to the declaration of a global pandemic by the World Health Organization (WHO) in March 2020. Governments around the world responded to the rapid spread of the virus by imposing strict lockdown measures, including social distancing, mask mandates, and travel restrictions. These measures were implemented to slow down the transmission of the virus and prevent healthcare systems from becoming overwhelmed. However, the social consequences of these lockdowns have been profound. One of the most noticeable impacts of the Covid-19 pandemic has been the disruption to daily life. Schools closed, businesses shut down, and millions of people were forced to isolate themselves at home.
