Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to determine whether computer-based instruction impacted student academic achievement and attitudes towards using technology in the classroom. This action research study used a quantitative research methods approach by analyzing pre- and post-tests and student surveys. Twenty-eight third grade students participated in the study by completing a pre- and post-test, an Attitude Survey, and lessons on fractions over a three-week period. The participants were randomly grouped into two instructional groups of fourteen; computer-based and teacher led. The researcher analyzed both pre- and post-tests to determine how much growth students made after receiving instruction in their group. The researcher also analyzed surveys taken from the computer-based instruction group at the start and conclusion of the study to determine changes in attitudes for students learning through computer-based instruction. Findings from the study indicate that the use of computer-based instruction positively impacts student academic achievement. The results also found that the extended use of computer-based learning in the classroom improves student attitudes towards learning and technology. However, data also showed computer-based instruction is not as effective on academic achievement as teacher-led instruction. Recommendations from the study include increasing the access and opportunities to use computer-based learning in the classroom. Additionally, using computer-based instruction as a supplementary form to teacher-led instruction can potentially provide students will a stronger understanding of any topic.

This book was released on 2009-06 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The requirement to accurately measure the impact of educational technology has become more critical then ever before as a result of the economic commitment to educational technology, the pressure for greater accountability as well as the rapid rate of technological change. This study investigated the STAR-W program, which facilitated computer assisted instruction, to determine the grant's impact on the Language Arts Literacy portion of statewide assessment. Prior to this investigation, the usefulness of the STAR-W grant, in terms of achievement test scores, was essentially unknown. There was a need to examine the connections between educational technology and student academic achievement to maximize the STAR-W resources. The findings generated from this study have broadened the understanding of those connections as well as contributed to the ever-growing body of knowledge concerning the integration of computer-assisted instruction into 21st Century educational curriculums, classrooms, and schools.

This book was released on 2011 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this experimental study was to examine the impact of home computers with computer based instruction and parental/guardian monitoring on the academic performance of underserved African American elementary school children in the Birmingham, Alabama public schools. the study participants were 28 fourth grade students who were randomly selected from one elementary school. the study utilized three groups. Two groups were subjected to experimental treatment conditions of (1) provision of computer-based instruction and a computer in the home but without parental/guardian monitoring and (2) provision of computer-based instruction and a computer in the home with parental/guardian monitoring of the usage of the computers, respectively. the third group received only computer-based instruction but was not provided with a computer until the completion of the study. the results of the study indicated that there was no significant difference between the three groups of fourth graders in terms of their academic achievement in language arts, mathematics and reading after the experimental treatment. However, when the data were analyzed by gender, some differences were found between girls and boys. Boys with home computers but without parental monitoring showed regression in language arts, but they performed significantly better when they had both computers and parental/guardian monitoring. Girls performed best when they had just the computers without parental monitoring, but showed relatively less improvement when parents were involved. It is recommended to conduct similar studies with larger samples drawn from different schools, to clarify these findings.

Book Impact of Mathematics Computer assisted Instruction on English Language Learner Achievement

Download or read book Impact of Mathematics Computer assisted Instruction on English Language Learner Achievement written by Christie Jacquelyn Jay and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This quasi-experimental study examined the effect of supplemental mathematics computer-assisted instructional programs on the achievement of students in grades three and four over a two year period. This study evaluates the computer-assisted instruction (CAI) supplemental interventions through the lens of the sheltered instruction approach to teaching English Language Learner (ELL) students. The students who took part in the intervention attended nine elementary schools in one Arkansas district in the 2011-2012 and 2012-2013 school years. Data from Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) assessments were analyzed using a factorial ANOVA with pretest and two posttests over the course of two school years. Data variables included ELL status and method of instruction CAI v Traditional Instruction (TI). This study sought to determine the impact CAI programs had on the math MAP RIT scores of third and fourth grade students in the district. Both ELL and non-ELL students were included in the study to determine if the CAI programs were more successful with either group. Results indicated that use of CAI does not exact significantly different math achievement scores than TI alone, according to math MAP RIT scores. Results were analyzed using an Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) with repeated measures for two different factors. The TIME*ELL*CAI interaction was not significant, however, the main effect of group (ELL) was significant, as was the effect of time. Post hoc contrasts found that math scores for all groups at the follow up sessions were significantly higher than scores observed at baseline.
