Book An analysis of CGIAR 2018 policy contributions Overview and country level insights

Download or read book An analysis of CGIAR 2018 policy contributions Overview and country level insights written by Benfica, Rui and published by Intl Food Policy Res Inst. This book was released on 2021-04-27 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The CGIAR results framework includes annual reporting of the major innovations and policy contributions from CGIAR research funded through the CRPs. This report complements information on the 2018 CGIAR Results Dashboard and in the annual report by providing a descriptive analysis, including a deeper dive into some specific countries. The analysis disaggregates policy outcomes by CRP type and maps them with the Food and Agriculture Policy Classification to parse their relative orientation toward consumption, production, or trade policies. It also maps them against the One CGIAR five Impact Areas to assess the level of alignment in selected countries. This report concludes with recommendations for a set of policy outcomes for which impact assessments could be conducted.

Book Improving Municipal Management for Cities to Succeed

Download or read book Improving Municipal Management for Cities to Succeed written by Independent Evaluation Group, World Bank and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2009-07-15 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cities now house half the world s population and produce 70 percent of its GDP. Managing them well helps development. Strengthening municipal management of planning, finance, and service provision has been at the core of World Bank support through municipal development projects (MDPs). This book reviews how, worldwide, nearly 3,000 municipalities have benefitted from 190 World Bank-supported MDPs over the past decade, three quarters of which achieved satisfactory outcomes. The finance dimension of MDPs computerized accounting, revenue generation, and municipal credit produced some of the best results, but weaker outcomes came from attempts to stimulate private finance of municipal services. City planning, used by municipalities worldwide, was not a strong priority for MDPs. But building municipal information systems, for example in Chile, were successful. Monitoring and evaluation rarely worked well, except when municipalities themselves were convinced of its usefulness, such as in Russia, Tunisia, and Colombia. Results in managing service provision were mixed. The poverty focus of MDPs was strikingly weak across the portfolio. Cost-benefit analysis rarely prioritized municipal investments. But MDPs helped municipalities strengthen their procurement function. MDPs helped municipalities manage services more effectively. Better results still can come from a stronger poverty focus, more attention to planning and prioritizating investments, and more effective operation and maintenance of such investments.

Book Improving Effectiveness and Outcomes for the Poor in Health Nutrition and Population

Download or read book Improving Effectiveness and Outcomes for the Poor in Health Nutrition and Population written by World Bank and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2009-01-01 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study evaluates the effectiveness of the World Bank Group's support for health, nutrition, and population (HNP) in developing countries from 1997 to 2008 - totaling more than $17 billion - and distills lessons for greater impact in the future. It finds that the Bank Group now funds a smaller share of global support for HNP than a decade ago, but its support remains substantial and adds considerable value. About two-thirds of the Bank's HNP support has had satisfactory outcomes, often in difficult environments. But in a number of country settings, particularly in Africa, it has not performed well, in part due to high complexity and weak capacity. Only half of HNP support had a pro-poor focus, while support to reduce high fertility and promote family planning has dwindled. The evaluation highlights the contribution of investments in water supply, sanitation, and hygiene to improving the health of the poor and the lessons from support for sector-wide approaches, communicable disease control, and health reform. Moving forward, the World Bank needs to improve the performance of its HNP support and the Bank and IFC need to take actions to ensure their support reaches the poor and contributes greater social benefits, respectively.
