Book Mobile Capital and Latin American Development

Download or read book Mobile Capital and Latin American Development written by James E. Mahon and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2010-11-01 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Particularly timely in light of the recent Mexican peso crisis, Mobile Capital and Latin American Development examines the causes, consequences, and implications of the Latin American capital flight of the 1980s. It addresses the increasingly mobile and privatized nature of international capital and its power to shape economic policy in those countries. Through a comparison of the policy experiences of Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, and Venezuela, James E. Mahon finds that those countries that suffered the most capital flight had previously faced fewer structural trade problems and had not reoriented their exchange policies to diversify exports and deal with exchange-market instability. Since the countries that stumbled worst into capital flight before the debt crisis were later among the most aggressive neoliberal reformers, Mahon discusses the ways in which overseas capital served as a kind of pressure for free-market reform. Finally, the idea that internationally mobile capital now can operate as a kind of senate--an arm of the wealthy few, guarding the established order against the arbitrary, dangerous tendencies of the executive and popular chamber--is examined with relation to theories of dependency and the institutionalization of democracy.

Book Latin America At The Crossroads

Download or read book Latin America At The Crossroads written by Howard J. Wiarda and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-04-02 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A provocative and controversial look at Latin America as it stands at a crossroads, this book analyzes the complex economic and social roots of the debt crisis and evaluates the prospects for new development strategies for the 1990s. Dr. Wiarda begins by placing the regional economic crisis in the larger context of technological change, political upheaval, and the international economy. He then explores new choices and realities in inter-American relations and the role international lending agencies can take to assist Latin America in meeting the challenge of the next decade. The author suggests that "smokescreens and mirrors" have obscured the true nature of the crisis and, as a result, have skewed the policy debate.

Book Capital Markets Growth and Economic Policy in Latin America

Download or read book Capital Markets Growth and Economic Policy in Latin America written by Antonio Jorge and published by Praeger. This book was released on 2000-01-30 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Looking at how Latin American countries have coped with the 1994 Mexican crisis and the earlier debt crisis of the 1980s, this book reveals the full extent of what has come to be known as the tequila effect. Written by distinguished economists and financiers from Latin America, the Caribbean, and the United States, the volume also examines the social, political, and economic issues associated with ever-expanding trade and globalization. The book opens with chapters considering the impact of the Mexican crisis on Argentina, Colombia, and Venezuela, and it provides an interesting account of the events leading up to the crisis itself. In the following section, the contributors examine issues of economic growth by considering such topics as the need for a new growth strategy, by comparing the Latin American and Asian economies, and by looking at the Cuban economy from a trading partner's perspective. The final section takes an indepth look at the complex issues of neoliberalist versus neopopulist thinking in shaping Latin America's economic policies for the 21st century.

Book Coping with the Latin American Debt

Download or read book Coping with the Latin American Debt written by Robert G. Wesson and published by Praeger. This book was released on 1988-11-02 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nearly half of the Third World debt, or about $400 million, is owed by Latin America. How this has come about and what it means for Latin America's future are the subjects of twelve essays by experts on the Latin American debt problem. Despite their widely varied backgrounds and interests, the contributors aim toward a clearer understanding of the meaning of the debt problem and where it may be headed. A background sketch of the problem is provided, as is an account of attempts to cope with the protracted crisis. Detailed discussions follow of the largest debtors, including Mexico, Brazil, Argentina, and Chile. The situations of the small Central American and Caribbean states are also treated. Finally, the volume explores the question of whether sovereign lending is really good business for banks or a good solution for these countries.
