Book The Budget As A Communication Tool

Download or read book The Budget As A Communication Tool written by Justin Marlowe and published by ICMA Publishing. This book was released on 2013-07-01 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today’s local governments are under great pressure to provide services faster, cheaper, and in more customized ways while meeting stringent standards for financial and performance accountability. These trends, coupled with a growing distrust of public institutions, suggest that local governments have much to gain from effective communication with citizens about service delivery costs, processes, and priorities. Because resource allocation issues are very important to citizens, the budget document is an ideal platform for presenting that information. The Budget As A Communication Tool discusses some of the challenges and drawbacks that often accompany attempts to usefully engage citizens in the budget process, and it provides several examples of simple but effective presentations of the information necessary to promote effective citizen understanding of and participation in the budget process.

Book The Ground Between

Download or read book The Ground Between written by Sefton Darby and published by Bridget Williams Books. This book was released on 2017-11-13 with total page 105 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is a deep dysfunction in the way we talk about oil and mining. Battles over oil and mining developments in New Zealand are fierce and polarised. Often presented as a simple trade-off between conservation or quick profit, the debate leaves little space for discussion across ideological divides. The Ground Between provides a rare account from someone who has worked within this contested arena. Drawing on his experience with local and international mining companies, governments and NGOs, Sefton Darby reflects frankly on the state of resource extraction in New Zealand. Seeking to reset the debate within a global context, this book is ultimately about how we – as a country – make decisions around contentious issues.

Download or read book OECD Economic Surveys New Zealand 2019 written by OECD and published by OECD Publishing. This book was released on 2019-06-25 with total page 195 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Well-being in New Zealand is generally high, although there is room for improvement in incomes, housing affordability, distribution, water quality and GHG emissions. Economic growth is projected to remain around 21⁄2 per cent. The main risks to the outlook are rising trade restrictions and a housing market correction. Labour market reforms have been initiated to increase wages for the low paid but will need to be implemented cautiously to minimise potential adverse effects. Substantial planned increases in bank capital requirements should reduce the expected costs of financial crises but might reduce economic activity.

Not content with the idea of a school being contained within four walls and existing only for a few hours every day, Dodd and Konzal know that a school which looks after the complete child exists far beyond its four walls and for the whole 24 hours in each day. They present a radical democratic vision of the public school where everyone not just students, teachers and parents plays a part in shaping our children and, consequently, our future.

Book International Practices to Promote Budget Literacy

Download or read book International Practices to Promote Budget Literacy written by Harika Masud and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2017-06-28 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Budget literacy is defined as 'the ability to read, decipher, and understand public budgets to enable and enhance meaningful citizen participation in the budget process'. It is comprised of two main parts - (i) a technical understanding of public budgets, including familiarity with government spending, tax rates and public debt and; (ii) the ability to engage in the budget process, comprising of practical knowledge on day-to-day issues, as well as an elementary understanding of the economic, social and political implications of budget policies, the stakeholders involved and when and how to provide inputs during the annual budget cycle. Given that no international standards or guidelines have been established for budget literacy education to date, this book seeks to address this gap by taking stock of illustrative initiatives promoting budget literacy for youth in selected countries. The underlying presumption is that when supply-side actors in the budget process -- governments -- simplify and disseminate budget information for demand-side actors -- citizens -- this information will then be used by citizens to provide feedback on the budget. However, since citizens are often insufficiently informed about public budgets to constructively participate in budget processes one way to empower them and to remedy the problem of "budget illiteracy" is to provide budget-literacy education in schools to youth, helping them evolve into civic-minded adults with the essential knowledge needed for analyzing their government's fiscal policy objectives and measures, and the confidence and sense of social responsibility to participate in the oversight of public resources. This book elaborates on approaches, learning outcomes, pedagogical strategies and assessment approaches for budget literacy education, and presents lessons that are relevant for the development, improvement, or scaling up of budget literacy initiatives.

Book Towards a Political Economy of Resource dependent Regions

Download or read book Towards a Political Economy of Resource dependent Regions written by Greg Halseth and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-08-18 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book advances our understanding of resource-dependent regions in developed economies in the 21st Century. It explores how rural and small town places are working to find success in a new economy marked by demographic, economic, social, cultural, political, and environmental change. How are we to understand the changes and transformations working through communities and economies? Where are the trajectories of change leading these resource-dependent places and regions? Drawing upon examples from Canada, USA, UK, Australia, New Zealand, and the Nordic countries, these and other questions are explored and addressed by constructing a critical political economy framework of resource hinterland transition. Towards a Political Economy of Resource Dependent Regions is a key resource for students and researchers in geography, rural and industrial sociology, economics, environmental studies, political science, regional studies, and planning, as well as policy-makers, those in industry and the private sector, and local and regional development practitioners.

Book Revitalizing Rural America

Download or read book Revitalizing Rural America written by Michael Murray and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 1996 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses the contribution of collaborative rural community efforts to the challenge of responding to change in the late 20th century advanced capitalist economy of the U.S. Rural society is being transformed by having to adapt to a new international order, a changing role for government, the accepted interdependence of community and economic development and the strong relationship between community and place. The participation of rural people in thinking more about their own future and putting into practice their ideas for securing it demands a central position on the policy agenda. It is within this context that the authors review recent progress on the rural development front and provide a critical study of associated processes and achievements. This book offers an in-depth discussion on rural community change and development and combines a critical review of shifting public policy.
