Book excerpt: This year-long study investigated whether intervention programs can have a significant effect on improving student attendance, tardiness, and academic achievement. The students chosen for this study attend a large comprehensive high school in California's Central Valley and were enrolled in the Students for Success Intervention Program. The students in the intervention program were comprised of 34 sophomore, junior, and senior students who were recommended by school counselors because of poor grades and attendance. Students who participated in the Student for Success Intervention Program met with the intervention teacher weekly for 20 minutes. Students' GPA, attendance, and tardy records were used for quantitative data. Attendance, tardy, and GPA data that were collected from the 2011-2012 school year before the program was initiated were compared with attendance, tardy, and GPA data from the 2012-2013 school year, after implementation of the Students for Success Intervention Program. Data were entered into the Statistics Package for Social Sciences (SPSS). A paired samples t-test was completed to determine if there was a significant change between pre- and postintervention GPA, attendance, and tardy rates. The results suggest that the intervention program had a positive effect on improving student tardy rates and academic achievement. The data analysis also suggested that absenteeism was not significantly reduced by this program and continues to be a complex problem for this school as well as other schools.

Consistent school attendance is critical if students are to build and maintain a foundation for ongoing learning and academic success throughout life. When students are not in attendance, they miss essential instruction, which often cannot be replicated. This case study describes the experiences of five (5) high school students identified with chronic student absenteeism from a purposefully selected junior and senior high 4Ps student beneficiaries of T. National Agricultural School. Through a semi-structured interview process the study sought to understand the reasons of absenteeism of those students identified with chronic student absenteeism, along with the voices of their parents and teachers. The findings reveal that despite the support from the government through the 4Ps fund, students do make absences due to peer influence, financial problem, family concerns, lack of interest and illness. These show a clear manifestation of an existing program that needs a thorough evaluation in coming up with a rational solution to the problem. With the prevailing absenteeism problem among the 4Ps beneficiaries, their academic performance suffered a big blow on their grades prompting them to do some measures to pass the subjects. Hence, to compensate what they have missed, special projects and activities were done to cope with the situation. In light with the findings, teachers should come up with a more serious and strict monitoring mode of attendance of the 4Ps beneficiaries. With this, a strong bond between the parents and the teachers to work together should be developed to closely monitor the students' activities regularly. Likewise, the school should involve the students in academic awakening activities as one of the measures used to reduce absenteeism and ultimately, increase academic performance. Because of poverty, many families are left deprived of their basic needs. The children are forced to stop going to school to help their families. With this as the main ground, the Philippine government initiated a program called the Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4Ps) to address poverty in response to the country’s commitment to the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). This program aims to provide cash assistance to the less fortunate to alleviate their immediate needs and break the intergenerational transmission and cycle of poverty.

Book excerpt: Students who attend preschool regularly are significantly more likely than chronically absent preschoolers, those who missed at least 10 percent of the school year, to be ready for kindergarten and to attend school regularly in later grades. The study, which followed 25,000 three- and four-year-olds served by Chicago Public Schools (CPS) school-based preschool programs, finds chronic absenteeism is rampant among preschoolers in Chicago. In 2011-2012, almost half of three-year-olds and more than one-third of four-year-olds were chronically absent. This report examines the extent of preschool absenteeism and the reasons preschool students are absent. It also examines the relationship between preschool absences and students' scores on measures of kindergarten readiness in math, letter recognition, and social-emotional development, as well as assessments of second-grade reading fluency. Ultimately, students who miss more preschool have lower kindergarten readiness scores, and students who are chronically absent in preschool are more likely to be chronically absent in kindergarten and have lower second grade reading scores. However, students who enter preschool with the weakest skills benefit the most from regular attendance.

Book excerpt: There is a problem in large, suburban high schools that relates to reduced degrees of student success. This problem occurred due to poor student attendance which led to low academic achievement, high rates of student discipline, and decreased graduation rates. This problem also led to poor scores on state benchmark tests that can negatively impact district accreditation and cause a loss of state and federal funding. This study addressed the association between student attendance to three specific indicators of students' success. A quantitative correlational methodology was used to explain the degree of association between the students' attendance and the three outcome variables of academic achievement measured by grade point average (GPA), student discipline as measured by the number of office referrals, and graduation rates at a large, suburban hgih school in the Midwest. Archived data from a single school year are used in the research. As student attendance rates increased, the mean grade point average increased and mean discipline referral rates decreased. The results showed the impact in graduation rate was not significant. The results of this study have corroborated the previous research and literature on the topic of attendance on student success. The research found a significant correlation between attendance and student success. The data and conclusions can be used to advocate for programs and services and for the allocation of resources for educational programming; particularly programs that support increased student attendance, improved academic achievement, decreased discipline incidents, and enhanced rate of graduation.

Through a mixed methods design, using independent samples t-tests together with student interviews, this study examined a partnership program's impact on school attendance as an indicator of academic achievement and predictor to graduation. The program is part of a partnership between a school district, school police department, and city government. The research focused on the experiences of 13- to 17-year-old students who were referred to Los Angeles Unified School District Pupil Services and Attendance (PSA) counselors at FamilySource community agencies after committing minor law infractions through the partnership's arrest diversion program. The study used a systems theoretical approach, the 40 Developmental Assets framework, and the program's theory of change to illuminate how the program addresses individual, family, school, and community factors. Findings revealed that over 65% of students (N=129) who were referred to interventions by a PSA counselor followed through and engaged in one or more of the recommended interventions. Types of intervention referrals included drug counseling, individual counseling, youth development services and other services, such as anger management and recreational programs. No statistically significant differences were found in attendance rates between students who did engage in recommended interventions and those who did not. However, regardless of engagement in service interventions, 68.8% of students were not chronically absent. Student interviews revealed that the initial intake assessment with the PSA counselor may itself be an intervention that has a positive effect on students, regardless of their subsequent engagement in referral recommendations. The strongest impact of the program was on internal developmental assets, particularly commitment to learning and positive self-identity. The study shows some evidence of a promising program that diverts students away from the juvenile justice system by impacting psychosocial assets and thus educational outcomes such as attendance.

Book excerpt: Reducing student absenteeism is a key part of the School District of Philadelphia's plan to boost graduation rates. One of the district's goals is to increase guardians' awareness of absenteeism, with the hope that greater awareness will lead to guardians' taking a more active role in improving their student's attendance and academic performance. In an effort to increase guardians' awareness of absenteeism, the School District of Philadelphia partnered with Regional Educational Laboratory (REL) Mid-Atlantic to conduct a randomized controlled trial, which is based on the principles of "nudge" theory. Nudge theory is an approach used in the behavioral sciences that involves unobtrusive interventions to promote desired behaviors (Thaler & Sunstein, 2008). In this study the "nudge" was a single postcard sent to guardians to test whether it could reduce absenteeism and whether one message on the postcard had a greater impact on reducing absenteeism than another did. In October 2014 postcards with different messages--one encouraging guardians to improve their student's attendance and the other encouraging guardians to improve their student's attendance and adding specific information about the child's attendance history--were sent to the homes of students in grades 1-12 to see what impact, if any, the message would have on absenteeism through the end of December 2014. A control group received no mailings from the district. The absence information provided on the postcard was for the previous school year (2013/14). The study found that a single postcard that encouraged guardians to improve their student's attendance reduced absences by roughly 2.4 percent. There was no statistically significant difference in absences between students whose guardians were sent one message rather than the other. An additional analysis to examine whether there was a differential impact of the postcards on elementary versus secondary students' absences showed that the effect of the postcard did not differ between students in grades 1-8 and students in grades 9-12. This study has three main limitations. First, the unexpectedly large number of unique school-grade combinations limited statistical power by yielding an average of 40 students per school-grade combination. Second, students who did not have reliable mailing addresses were excluded from the study. Third, the number of school days analyzed in the study occurred within a short timeframe (there were 43 school days between October 9 and December 31). Even without any outreach from the district, the average student missed very few days of school in this timeframe. So if the average student whose household did not receive a postcard was absent for only three days of school, any intervention could reduce the average absence by a maximum of three days.
