Book excerpt: Objectif: L'objectif de notre étude était de définir si un vécu difficile de l'accouchement est associé à une difficulté lors la reprise de la sexualité dans le post-partum ou à une diminution de la qualité de celle-ci par rapport à avant la grossesse. Nous souhaitions également définir le besoin et la satisfaction des couples concernant les informations reçues de la part de l'équipe médicale à ce sujet. Matériel et méthodes: Il s'agit d'une étude d'observation longitudinale de cohorte analysant 200 couples dont la femme a accouché au Centre Hospitalier de Romans à partir du premier Avril 2007. Le recueil des données concernant la sexualité et le vécu de l'accouchement s'est fait grâce à l'envoi par courrier de questionnaires à réponses fermées à chacun des membres du couple. Un score de sexualité cotant l'épanouissement sexuel, le désir et le plaisir a été créé, permettant d’analyser la sexualité des 230 répondants (118 femmes et 112 hommes). Les résultats ont été analysés grâce au test du Chi2 et l'Odds Ratio était calculé en cas de résultats statistiquement significatifs. Résultats: Un vécu « difficile » de l'accouchement comparé à un vécu « plutôt heureux » a montré: une baisse plus importante du score de sexualité chez les hommes mais les résultats n'étaient pas statistiquement significatifs, une différence significativement plus importante de l'écart entre le délai espéré de reprise des rapports sexuels et le délai réel de reprise pour les hommes et les femmes, une baisse de fréquence moyenne des rapports sexuels significativement plus importante pour les hommes, des dyspareunies 4 fois plus fréquentes pour les femmes, un épanouissement sexuel déclaré significativement plus souvent inférieur pour les femmes. Conclusion: Un accouchement traumatisant peut avoir un impact très négatif sur la vie des couples et sur leur sexualité. Pour une grande partie d'entre eux il est important de pouvoir en reparler avec l'équipe médicale dans le post-partum et de pouvoir avoir des informations sur la reprise de la sexualité.

In this classic of French cultural studies, Georges Didi-Huberman traces the intimate and reciprocal relationship between the disciplines of psychiatry and photography in the late nineteenth century. Focusing on the immense photographic output of the Salpetriere hospital, the notorious Parisian asylum for insane and incurable women, Didi-Huberman shows the crucial role played by photography in the invention of the category of hysteria. Under the direction of the medical teacher and clinician Jean-Martin Charcot, the inmates of Salpetriere identified as hysterics were methodically photographed, providing skeptical colleagues with visual proof of hysteria's specific form. These images, many of which appear in this book, provided the materials for the multivolume album Iconographie photographique de la Salpetriere. As Didi-Huberman shows, these photographs were far from simply objective documentation. The subjects were required to portray their hysterical "type"—they performed their own hysteria. Bribed by the special status they enjoyed in the purgatory of experimentation and threatened with transfer back to the inferno of the incurables, the women patiently posed for the photographs and submitted to presentations of hysterical attacks before the crowds that gathered for Charcot's "Tuesday Lectures." Charcot did not stop at voyeuristic observation. Through techniques such as hypnosis, electroshock therapy, and genital manipulation, he instigated the hysterical symptoms in his patients, eventually giving rise to hatred and resistance on their part. Didi-Huberman follows this path from complicity to antipathy in one of Charcot's favorite "cases," that of Augustine, whose image crops up again and again in the Iconographie. Augustine's virtuosic performance of hysteria ultimately became one of self-sacrifice, seen in pictures of ecstasy, crucifixion, and silent cries.

During that time the native population of the Western Hemisphere declined by as many as 100 million people. Indeed, as historian David E. Stannard argues in this stunning new book, the European and white American destruction of the native peoples of the Americas was the most massive act of genocide in the history of the world. Stannard begins with a portrait of the enormous richness and diversity of life in the Americas prior to Columbus's fateful voyage in 1492. He then follows the path of genocide from the Indies to Mexico and Central and South America, then north to Florida, Virginia, and New England, and finally out across the Great Plains and Southwest to California and the North Pacific Coast. Stannard reveals that wherever Europeans or white Americans went, the native people were caught between imported plagues and barbarous atrocities, typically resulting in the annihilation of 95 percent of their populations. What kind of people, he asks, do such horrendous things to others? His highly provocative answer: Christians. Digging deeply into ancient European and Christian attitudes toward sex, race, and war, he finds the cultural ground well prepared by the end of the Middle Ages for the centuries-long genocide campaign that Europeans and their descendants launched--and in places continue to wage--against the New World's original inhabitants. Advancing a thesis that is sure to create much controversy, Stannard contends that the perpetrators of the American Holocaust drew on the same ideological wellspring as did the later architects of the Nazi Holocaust. It is an ideology that remains dangerously alive today, he adds, and one that in recent years has surfaced in American justifications for large-scale military intervention in Southeast Asia and the Middle East. At once sweeping in scope and meticulously detailed, American Holocaust is a work of impassioned scholarship that is certain to ignite intense historical and moral debate.
