Book excerpt: Les techniques culturales sans labour (TCS) sont un ensemble de techniques de travail du sol, allant du pseudo-labour au semis direct en passant par le travail superficiel. En Bretagne, ces techniques concernent 21% des surfaces cultivées en 2006. Le fonctionnement des sols, suite à l'arrêt du labour, apparaît comme l'une des principales préoccupations des agriculteurs qui ont opté pour les TCSL. Dans ce contexte, un essai a été mis en place depuis 2000 à la station expérimentale de Kerguéhennec (Chambre d'Agriculture de Bretagne) afin de mesurer l'impact de la suppression du labour sur le fonctionnement des sols et le développement des cultures. A présent, pour l'accompagnement des agriculteurs, une méthode efficace est recherchée qui permettrait d'obtenir rapidement un diagnostic de l'état structural du sol. Cette année deux méthodes simplifiées, Peerlkamp révisée et VSA/drop-test, ont été comparées à des méthodes classiques d'évaluation de la structure du sol, sur deux sites pédo-climatiques distincts (Kerguéhennec, Le Rheu) et selon différents modalités de travail du sol. Les résultats montrent que les méthodes simplifiées distinguent les types de sol mais pas les modalités de travail du sol au sein d'un même site. Un nouvel outil simplifié, le Diagnostic Simplifié de la structure du sol (D.S.) a donc été mis en place. Il combine des informations portant sur le contexte général de la parcelle (caractéristiques du sol et pratiques culturales) avec l'observation de béchées de sol, selon la méthode Peerlkamp révisée et le VSA/drop-test. Les résultats du D.S. montrent des corrélations fortes et significatives avec l'ensemble des méthodes classiques étudiées à l'exception de la conductivité hydraulique à saturation. Le D.S. a permis de distinguer l'état structural des sols selon le site et pour Kerguéhennec, les modalités de travail du sol. A l'avenir, l'outil devra être testé dans d'autres contextes pédo-climatiques. Si le D.S. est validé, des recommandations de gestion des sols devront alors être mises au point. La méthode de Diagnostic Simplifié proposée dans cette étude intervient en complément aux évaluations classiques de la structure du sol afin de procéder à une évaluation rapide du fonctionnement du sol pour accompagner les agriculteurs dans l'évolution de leurs pratiques.

Les caractéristiques de la communauté lombricienne ont été étudiées. Les paramètres physiques testés recouvrent des propriétés structurales (stabilité structurales, macroporosité, bioturbation lombricienne) et des propriétés fonctionnelles (humidité pondérale et conductivité hydraulique) des sols. L'étude a été menée sur le dispositif expérimental de Kerguéhennec. 4 modalités ont été étudiées : le travail très superficiel sans retournement à 8 cm (08), le travail superficiel sans retournement à 15 cm (015), le labour agronomique à 15 cm (AR) et le labour conventionnel à 25 cm (CP). En tendance générale, le travail superficiel (015) et le labour agronomique (AP) semblent favoriser l'abondance et la biomasse lombriciennes mais l'effet positif de la réduction du travail sur ces caractéristiques, ne peut être infirmé ou confirmé, compte tenu des fortes variabilités inter-parcellaires et inter-bloc observées. Par ailleurs, un travail très superficiel (08) permet l'augmentation de la stabilité structurale (effet significatif), et semble impacter positivement sur la bioturbation lombricienne et la macroporosité totale en surface. Il semble également favoriser la conductivité hydraulique des sols en surface alors que le travail superficiel à 15cm (015) augmente le taux d'humidité des sols.

Par ailleurs, l'agriculture apparaît comme l'une des principales activités responsables de la dégradation des eaux superficielles de Bretagne. Dans ce contexte, des essais ont été mis en place en 2000, afin d'évaluer l'impact de trois techniques de travail du sol, sur le ruissellement, l'érosion, les transferts d'herbicides et de phosphore en contexte breton. Douze années après la mise en place des essais de Kerguéhennec, un premier bilan comparatif de l'impact de trois techniques de travail du sol, est réalisé. Après une première phase d'évolution du système, caractérisée par des ruissellemnts sous blé et RGI, plus importants pour les sols travaillés en non labour, les résultats, font apparaître un ruissellement atténué et une érosion significativement plus faible en TCSL. L'amélioration de la stabilité structurale du sol en n on labour, apparaît comme un facteur explicatif de cette évolution. Cela est corroboré par l'évolution des états de surface, qui met en évidence une plus grande sensibilité du sol à la désagrégation en labour, ayant pour conséquence, une forte diminution de l'infiltration de l'eau. Les résidus de cultures sont identifiés comme le facteur de limitation des ruissellements sous TCSL, sur culture de maïs. Cette présence de résidus à la surface du sol, apparaît comme un facteur-clé, permettant une forte diminution de l'érosion en TCSL par rapport au labour. Ces résidus, réduisent significativement les pertes de phosphore total dans le ruissellement, mais sont responsables de transferts de P solubles accentués en TCSL. Aucune tendance générale ne se dégage de ce bilan pluriannuel concernant les transferts d'herbicides, ces derniers étant très fortement influencés par les propriétés intrinsèques des molécules.

Book excerpt: Le laboratoire d’écophysiologie végétale et d’agro-écologie a mis en place un site expérimental dans le cadre d’un programme de recherche sur l’optimisation du travail du sol en agriculture biologique sur deux années (2005-2007). L’essai situé en Maine-et-Loire est un dispositif bloc avec quatre modalités de travail du sol : labour traditionnel (25 cm), labour agronomique (18-20 cm), travail superficiel (10-12 cm) et travail très superficiel (5-7 cm). La mesure de nombreux indicateurs sur deux années permet d’évaluer les impacts des techniques sans labour à la fois sur la qualité du sol et sur la culture. Concernant les propriétés du sol, le non-retournement du sol entraîne une compaction des anciens horizons travaillés en techniques sans labour, mais qui ne pénalise pas l’infiltration de l’eau en surface et à 17 cm. La stabilité structurale en surface semble s’améliorer en techniques sans labour mais pas en raison d’une concentration du carbone organique en surface. En effet, aucune différence n’est notée entre les modalités en termes d’éléments nutritifs et de propriétés chimiques. Néanmoins, le travail très superficiel présente une stratification du carbone organique et du phosphore, avec une déconcentration en profondeur. Grâce à la réduction de perturbation du sol en profondeur, le peuplement lombricien tend à augmenter en travail très superficiel. Les résultats sur le comportement du couvert végétal ne montrent que peu de différences entre les modalités. La culture de lupin en seconde année n’a pu être évaluée en raison d’une infestation importante par les adventices, liée à une contrainte expérimentale . La compaction observée ne limite pas l’enracinement de la culture de blé en première année. En raison d’une levée identique et d’un salissement par les adventices peu différent (supérieur en techniques sans labour en sortie hiver mais qui reste faible), le rendement en blé ne varie pas entre les modalités de travail du sol.

Des propriétés physiques ont été mesurées: densité apparente, porosité totale, humidité du sol, résistance à la pénétration et capacité d'infiltration de l'eau, ainsi que des propriétés biologiques et chimiques: teneurs en nutriments, population lombricienne, enracinement et rendement du triticale. La densité apparente apparait plus élevée dans la couche non travaillée en NL qu'en labour. La même tendance est observée pour la résistance à la pénétration. Plus de résidus végétaux sont laissés en surface en NL d'où une humidité et une porosité plus importantes dans l'horizon superficiel. L'infiltrabilité est plus élevée en NL du fait de passages préférentiels crées par une popuiation lombricienne plus importante. Les nutriments et la matiére organique s'accumuient en surface en NL conduisant à une élévation du pH. L'augmentation de compacité en NL n'est pas un obstacle à l'enracinemenl. L'effet le plus marqué en NL est le fort enherbemenl. Enfin, le rendement en grains est plus élevé en labour qu'en NL. La compétition avec les adventices peut expliquer la baisse de rendement en NL.
