This book was released on 1998 with total page 46 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is a significant gap of knowledge about actual results of irrigation management transfer. This includes the questions: Which strategies work? Which don't? and What prerequisites are necesssary to support sustainable local management of irrigation? This report examines the context of transfer, the basic transfer strategy, powers and functions devolved, and the impacts of transfer on irrigation management and irrigated agriculture in three sample irrigation districts of Colombia-the RUT, Rio Recio, and Samaca. data on performance of these schemes were analyzed for 4 or 5 years before and after transfer. Two additional schemes, San Rafael and Maria La Baja, which were transferred just prior to this study, provided a comparison of performance between transferred and nontransferred schemes, form the period of analysis.

Book Yield Impact of Irrigation Management Transfer A Success Story from the Philippines

Download or read book Yield Impact of Irrigation Management Transfer A Success Story from the Philippines written by Priya Shyamsundar and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2012 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Irrigation management transfer is an important strategy among donors and governments to strengthen farmer control over water and irrigation infrastructure. This study seeks to understand whether irrigation management transfer is meeting the promise of its commitments. The authors use data from a survey of 68 irrigator associations and 1,020 farm households in the Philippines to estimate the impact of irrigation management transfer on irrigation association performance and on rice yields. They also estimate a stochastic frontier production function to assess contributions to technical efficiency. There are three main results. First, the presence of irrigation management transfer is associated with an increase in maintenance activities undertaken by irrigation associations. Second, by increasing local control over water delivery, the presence of irrigation management transfer is associated with a 2-6 percent increase in farm yields. Rice production in irrigation management transfer areas is greater even after controlling for various differences among rice farmers in transfer and non-transfer areas. Third, irrigation management transfer is, at a minimum, poverty-neutral, and may even give the asset-poor a small boost in terms of rice yields. The authors speculate that this boost may be a result of increased timeliness of water delivery and better resolution of conflicts related to illegal use.

Book Reforming Institutions in Water Resource Management

Download or read book Reforming Institutions in Water Resource Management written by Lin Crase and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2009-09-02 with total page 377 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As water scarcities increase, nations throughout the world are in search of better institutions to manage water resources. India has been making substantial efforts to develop its water management systems since independence and significant increases in irrigated agriculture have taken place through both public and private initiatives. However, scarcities are increasing and major problems presently confront the management of water resources and irrigated agriculture. Resolving these problems is crucial for the future. The main purpose of this book is to provide a new approach for the analysis and design of water institutions that govern the use and development of water resources, particularly for agriculture which is the largest user. Drawing on the theory of New Institutional Economics and comparisons with Australia (as a developed country) and other less developed nations in Africa and Asia, the authors present original empirical data from three Indian states. Detailed analysis of these data is used to identify and recommend attributes and features of water management institutions that are conducive to effective resource management, its long-term success, and its best contribution to development.

Book Water and Security in Central Asia

Download or read book Water and Security in Central Asia written by Virpi Stucki and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-08 with total page 199 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Examining the water, development and security linkages in Central Asia can feel a bit like solving a Rubik’s cube. The Rubik’s cube starts to usually find structure and the different pieces find their places when its solver adopts a systematic approach. Still, solving the whole cube takes time and perseverance. This is also the case with water and security in Central Asia as demonstrated by the chapters in this book. In the case of water and security in Central Asia, there are many "faces", including not only the Central Asian states but also the neighbouring countries and other players of global geopolitics; "stickers" such as policies, practices, causes, and impacts; and "colours" such as the different stakeholders, ranging from the micro and meso levels to the macro level. Understanding all these, or getting clarity on the nexus, can seem extremely challenging. Even though none of the chapters alone answers the question of what constitutes water and security in Central Asia, each of them gives thoughtful ideas and information on the complexity of the issue. This book was published as a special issue of the International Journal of Water Resources Development.

Water for Agriculture provides a thorough overview of this highly topical subject, written in a clear and accessible style. The Scope of the book is wide both in its analysis and in its geographical coverage. Topics covered include the infrastructure, operation and maintenance of irrigation service supply, the supply of drainage services, economic cost benefit analysis, water resource planning at the regional scale, political economy and irrigation policy. The content of Water for Agriculture is enhanced by numerous tables, diagrams, and in-depth case studies. This book will be an essential read for those professionals involved in the planning of water resources, and for advanced students studying this topic as part of agriculture, development studies, economics, engineering, environmental science, geography, hydrology and planning courses.

Book Promise Trust and Evolution

Download or read book Promise Trust and Evolution written by Rucha Ghate and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2008-01-10 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From land management to water rights, this volume looks at the current status of Common Property Resources, or CPRs, in South Asia. Developed countries, have managed to establish well-defined property rights over numerous resources and in some instances extended non-exclusionary rights over privately owned resources over an extended period of time. In the developing world, however, the share of community property is extensive, either as a response to an expanding market or because the exposure to markets in still in its nascent stage. This coupled with the demands of globalization, has led to the co-existence of both community ownership of resources as well as an evolving private property rights market. This tension between public versus private ownership rights is particularly relevant in the developing countries of South Asia, not only because of its shared history but also because of its resources frequently cross national boundaries. This book tells the story of CPRs and the commons in a rapidly changing South Asia. Including contributions from those working with natural resources in Bhutan, India, Nepal, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka, the papers discuss issues such as equity in distribution; efficiency and productivity of resources; sustainability of resources; and institutional transition and governance.
