Book Biochemistry of Platelets

Download or read book Biochemistry of Platelets written by David Phillips and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 477 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Biochemistry of Platelets is a comprehensive review of the biochemistry of platelets, with emphasis on the molecular basis for the various biological processes in which they participate. Topics range from stimulus-response coupling mechanisms to platelet contractile proteins, platelet membrane glycoproteins, and storage organelles in platelets and megakaryocytes. The expression and function of adhesive proteins on the platelet surface is also discussed. Comprised of 12 chapters, this book begins with a description of the morphological and metabolic responses to agonists, as well as the involvement of certain processes in the coupling of agonist-receptor interactions to platelet responses. The following chapter deals with platelet arachidonate metabolism and platelet-activating factor, focusing on the release of arachidonate from platelet lipid stores; pathways of platelet arachidonate metabolism and effects of arachidonate metabolites; and inhibition of platelet arachidonate metabolism by aspirin. The structure, function, and modification in disease of platelet membrane glycoproteins are then discussed, along with prothrombin activation on platelets and platelet regulation of thrombus formation. Secreted platelet proteins as markers for pathological disorders are also considered. This monograph is intended as a reference for investigators involved in platelet research as well as a source of information for those working in other areas of biological investigation.

Book Platelet Membrane Glycoproteins

Download or read book Platelet Membrane Glycoproteins written by James N. George and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-13 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It was just about ten years ago that platelet membrane glycoproteins were first charac terized and their abnormalities in congenital bleeding disorders first recognized. Dur ing this decade there has been a remarkable growth in our understanding of the structure and membrane organization of the platelet surface glycoproteins, their in teractions with external ligands during the process of hemostasis, and their defects causing hemorrhagic disease. These studies have advanced the knowledge of platelet involvement in hemostasis from a cellular to a molecular level, and they have provided a model for contact interactions among other cell types. This seemed a proper time to ask those who contributed major observations and insights during these past years to review their progress and to assess the state of our present knowledge. We have planned this volume to begin with the biochemistry of platelet membrane glycoproteins themselves and proceed through their involvement in platelet function to the final considerations of the platelet's role in maintaining the integrity of the vascular system. Our aim was an integrated presentation on the blood platelet from the perspective of its highly specialized and reactive cell surface. James N. George Alan T. Nurden David R. Phillips vii Contents I. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Human Blood Groups is a comprehensive and fully referenced text covering both the scientific and clinical aspects of red cell surface antigens, including: serology, inheritance, biochemistry, molecular genetics, biological functions and clinical significance in transfusion medicine. Since the last edition, seven new blood group systems and over 60 new blood group antigens have been identified. All of the genes representing those systems have now been cloned and sequenced. This essential new information has made the launch of a third edition of Human Blood Groups, now in four colour, particularly timely. This book continues to be an essential reference source for all those who require clinical information on blood groups and antibodies in transfusion medicine and blood banking.

Book Thrombolytic Therapy in Acute Ischemic Stroke III

Download or read book Thrombolytic Therapy in Acute Ischemic Stroke III written by Takenori Yamaguchi and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On the threshold of an exciting new era for acute stroke diagnosis and treatment, the Third International Symposium on Thrombolytic Therapy in Acute Ischemic Stroke was held in Nara, Japan, in April 1994. The symposium brought together some 200 basic and clinical scientists for presentations and discussions of issues vital to the understanding of thrombolytic therapy. This volume compiles the major presentations of the symposium, with attention to applications of new diagnostic measures such as diffusion and perfusion MRI, contrast-enhanced transcranial Doppler and angioscopy. Other presentations examine the mechanisms of ischemia/reperfusion injury, hemorrhagic transformation, and reocclusion, with reviews of recent developments in thrombolytic agents. The proceedings of the symposium will be of special interest to researchers, physicians, and students in the fields of neurology, neurosurgery, and nuclear medicine, as well as those in pharmacology, critical care medicine, and related fields.

Book Megakaryocytes Platelets Macrophages and Eosinophils

Download or read book Megakaryocytes Platelets Macrophages and Eosinophils written by J. Robin Harris and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 363 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Blood Cell Biochemistry was initially conceived as part of the Plenum series Subcellular Biochemistry, from which it has developed into a separate series. The present volume is devoted primarily to contributions on megakaryocytes and platelets and, to a lesser extent, to macrophages and eosinophils. The book does not attempt a rigorous or total coverage of the particular topics; it represents the areas of current scientific activity and interest that were selected by the editor at the commencement of this project. In general, the approach has been similar to that adopted for Volume 1 of the series (Erythroid Cells); the same approach will be followed subsequently in Volume 3 (Lymphocytes and Granulocytes). This book opens with a developmentally oriented chapter by Janine Breton-Gorius on megakaryocyte maturation and platelet release in normal conditions, which serves to set the scene ultrastructurally for much of the data that follow. The biosynthesis and process ing of platelet glycoproteins in megakaryocytes is dealt with by Alain Duperray and his colleagues, and thereby provides an in-depth biochemical survey of the megakaryocyte. The applications and strengths of crossed immunoelectrophoresis for the study of platelet membrane proteins is then covered by Simon Karpatkin, and a detailed account of the heredity disorders of platelet function is provided by Francine Rendu and Evelyne Dupuy.
