Book Marine Toxins

    Book Details:
  • Author : Dominick Gray
  • Publisher : Nova Science Publishers
  • Release : 2016
  • ISBN : 9781634844864
  • Pages : 128 pages

Download or read book Marine Toxins written by Dominick Gray and published by Nova Science Publishers. This book was released on 2016 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In areas where toxic algal blooms occur, the main affected organisms are shellfish, which, because of their high levels of filtration (clearance rate), accumulate high concentrations of nutrients and toxic phytoplankton in their visceral tissue. This accumulation of toxins in shellfish leads to a distribution of these toxins to their different non-visceral tissues. Chapter One of Marine Toxins: Detection Methods, Chemical and Biological Aspects and Health Effects discusses the detection and quantification of lipophilic marine biotoxins by liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry from endemic species and gastropods. Chapter Two presents studies which use the similarity analysis of paralytic shellfish poisoning toxins (PSP-toxins) profile patterns to analyze epidemiological linkage of a group of toxins contaminated bivalves collected between years 2004 and 2015. Chapter Three provide an overview of the current status of biomarker use in the assessment of the effects of marine toxins on bivalve mollusks. Chapter Four reviews the latest research on the biological and clinical effects of caulerpenyne.

Book Molecular Approaches to the Study of the Ocean

Download or read book Molecular Approaches to the Study of the Ocean written by K.E. Cooksey and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 562 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Marine biological science is now studied at the molecular level and although research scientists depend on information gained using molecular techniques, there is no book explaining the philosophy of this approach. Molecular Approaches to the Study of the Ocean introduces the reasons why molecular technology is such a powerful tool in the study of the oceans, describing the types of techniques that can be used, why they are useful and gives examples of their application. Molecular biological techniques allow phylogenetic relationships to be explored in a manner that no macroscopic method can; although the book deals with organisms near the base of the marine food web, the ideas can be used in studies of macroorganisms as well as those in freshwater environments.

Book Marine Biotoxins and Seafood Poisoning

Download or read book Marine Biotoxins and Seafood Poisoning written by Pedro Reis Costa and published by MDPI. This book was released on 2019-11-21 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Marine biotoxins may pose a threat to the human consumption of seafood and seafood products. The increasing global trade and higher demand for seafood products worldwide represents a challenge for food safety authorities, policy makers, food business operators, and the scientific community, in particular, researchers devoted to environmental sciences, toxicology, and analytical chemistry. In addition, due to changes in climate conditions and technological developments, new and emerging marine toxins are being detected in regions where they were previously unknown. This Special Issue highlight studies aiming to the develop detection methods for marine biotoxins for better understanding the dynamics of accumulation/elimination of marine biotoxins and their effects on marine organisms, as well as toxin exposure studies that aim to evaluate the risks associated with the consumption of contaminated seafood.

Book excerpt: This paper provides an extensive review of different aspects of five shellfish-poisoning syndromes (paralytic, diarrhoeic, amnesic, neurologic and azapiracid), as well as one fish-poisoning syndrome (ciguatera fish poisoning), and discusses in detail the causative toxins produced by marine organisms, chemical structures and analytical methods of the toxins, habitat and occurrence of the toxin-producing organisms, case studies and existing regulations. Based on this analysis, risk assessments are carried out for each of the toxins, and recommendations are elaborated to improve the management of these risks in order to reduce the harmful effect of these toxins on public health.

Book Algal Toxins in Seafood and Drinking Water

Download or read book Algal Toxins in Seafood and Drinking Water written by Ian R. Falconer and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 235 pages. This volume provides definitive information on the identification of toxin marine and freshwater algae, the routine analysis and effects of algal toxins, their veterinary and public health impact, and on control measures in current use. Professionals in the food and water industry, and those working in public health and environmental ecology will find this book extremely useful.

Book Immunochemical Approaches to Coastal Estuarine and Oceanographic Questions

Download or read book Immunochemical Approaches to Coastal Estuarine and Oceanographic Questions written by Clarice M. Yentsch and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-13 with total page 415 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume represents a collection of pioneering papers introducing immunochemical techniques to the aquatic sciences. It is the product of a workshop entitled "Immunochemical Approaches to Coastal, Estuarine and Oceanographic Questions" held at the University of Southern Maine, Portland, Oct. 5-7, 1986. Funding from many sources made this workshop possible, and is gratefully acknowledged. The reader will note great variability in both the quality and scope of the papers which we have divided 'into four sections: I. Background material on the immune system (borrowed from a recent NIH publication) II. Background material related to aquatic sciences III. Techniques IV. Applications Readers familiar with terminology are directed to start with the original contributions related to aquatic sciences, page 21. Some of the contributions are abstracts only. Others are preliminary, for which we are grateful to the authors for their willingness to share recent sometimes tentative findings with a broader community. Some offer novel and tempting insights, but as they exist, lack adequate standards and controls. Others are thorough and represent major scientific contributions. The promise rests in generating and working with reagents of great specificity enabling orders of magnitude improvements in the sensitivity of our measurements. Authors also address the problems and limitations. We thank the numerous authors and reviewers. In support of every successful endeavor is someone of unusual savvy. For us, this has been David A. Phinney. His leadership, wisdom and wit have been important to the introduction of flow cytometry/sorting and immunochemistry into aquatic research.
