Book Immunity Protective Inoculations in Infectious Diseases and Serum Therapy

Download or read book Immunity Protective Inoculations in Infectious Diseases and Serum Therapy written by George M. Sternberg and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-17 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Immunity, Protective Inoculations in Infectious Diseases and Serum-Therapy The following quotations from a paper, entitled "Practical Results of Bacteriological Researches," read by the writer at the meeting of the Association of American Physicians, May 24, 1892, may serve as a preface to the present volume: "Science does nut demand practical results, but investigates for the purpose of establishing facts and explaining phenomena. And bacteriology, as a branch of natural history, is entitled to equal consideration with other departments of scientific research. Indeed, the low organisms known as bacteria offer many advantages for the study of fundamental biological problems, and the researches already made have borne abundant fruit from a scientific point of view. "But medicine is eminently practical in its aims, and practising physicians, as well as intelligent laymen, are apt to meet every announcement of a new discovery in pathology with the question, 'Does it aid in the cure of disease?' Heretofore the bacteriologist has been compelled to admit that the demonstration of the specific cause in a considerable number of infectious diseases, which has been obtained through his researches, has not resulted in the discovery of a specific treatment for these diseases. At the present moment we are in possession of experimental data which open up to us a vista of possibilities in specific treatment unsuspected a year or two ago. Book Infection Immunity and Serum Therapy

Download or read book Infection Immunity and Serum Therapy written by Howard Taylor Ricketts and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-16 with total page 808 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Infection, Immunity and Serum Therapy: In Relation to the Infectious Diseases of Man Immunity, in its present state of development, with its manifold new terms and special methods of experimentation, is a subject which appears difficult to one who has not studied the newer literature assiduously and grown into a knowledge of the conditions through actual work in the lab oratory. Much of the literature is technical in character and appears in journals not commonly found in the hands of the physician and student. Much of it also is comparatively recent, and its essence has not yet appeared in books which are in general use. The literature of immunity, more over, grows so amazingly that the analysis even of current works is a task of no mean proportions. At the same time, the subject is one of great interest and importance, and there exists a gen eral wish, frequently expressed, to know more about the recent advances and the conditions which have operated against the success of serum therapy on a broader scale. Book Immunization Safety Review

  • Pages : 304 pages

Download or read book Immunization Safety Review written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2002-07-02 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By two years of age, healthy infants in the United States can receive up to 20 vaccinations to protect against 11 diseases. Although most people know that vaccines effectively protect against serious infectious diseases, approximately one-quarter of parents in a recent survey believe that infants get more vaccines than are good for them, and that too many immunizations could overwhelm an infant's immune system. The Immunization Safety Review Committee reviewed the evidence regarding the hypothesis that multiple immunizations increase the risk for immune dysfunction. Specifically, the committee looked at evidence of potential biological mechanisms and at epidemiological evidence for or against causality related to risk for infections, the autoimmune disease type 1 diabetes, and allergic disorders.

The contributors synthesize the principles of immune defense on the molecular level (monoclonal antibodies, vaccines, methods of antigen presentation, and cytokines and cytokine antagonists), as well as on the cellular and clinical levels levels as a protection against infection. The review of the current state of anti-HIV immunotherapy covers HIV-specific passive and active immunization strategies, gene therapy, and host cell-targeted approaches for treating HIV infection and restoring immune function.
