Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The OHOLO conferences have been convened annually as from the spring of 1956; they have covered very wide areas from different and overlapping disciplines, as can be seen from the following list: 1956 Bacterial Genetics (not published) 1957 Tissue Cultures in Virological Research (not published) 1958 Inborn and Acquired Resistance to Infection in Animals (not published) 1959 Experimental Approach to Mental Diseases (not published) 1960 Cryptobiotic Stages in Biological Systems* 1961 Virus - Cell Relationships** 1962 Biological Synthesis and Function of Nucleic Acids** 1963 Cellular Control Mechanism of Macromolecular Synthesis** 1964 Molecular Aspects of Immunology** 1965 Cell Surfaces** 1966 Chemistry and Biology of Psychotropic Agents (not published) 1967 Structure and Mode of Action of Enzymes** 1968 Growth and Differentiation of Cells in vitro** 1969 Behaviour of Animal Cells in Culture** 1970 Microbial Toxins** 1971 Interaction of Chemical Agents with Cholinergic Mechanisms** The participants at these meetings from the different scien tific institutions of Israel and from many countries, are engaged in fields of study which represent widely divergent approaches to biology. Thus, a characteristic feature of the OHOLO meetings has been their multi-disciplinary nature. These small international conferences are distinguished by the relaxed atmosphere in which they are held, with ample time for informal as weIl as formal discussions. *Published by Elsevier Publishing Co. , Amsterdam (1960). **Published by the Israel Institute for Biological Research, Ness Ziona.

Book Viral and Rickettsial Infections of Animals

Download or read book Viral and Rickettsial Infections of Animals written by A. O. Betts and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 401 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Viral and Rickettsial Infections of Animals, Volume I, deals comprehensively with the viruses and rickettsiae that infect domestic animals. The book also aims demonstrate the basic unity of virology irrespective of whether the natural host is man or one of the lower animals. This book deals with general virology from the viewpoint of comparative medicine. It begins with accounts of the fundamental properties of viruses; proceeds to consider how these agents affect cells and how the animal body responds; and concludes by discussing the methods by which the natural cycle of infection can be interrupted or modified to the benefit of the host. Included are chapters on the physical, chemical, and biological properties of viruses, viral multiplication, the cultivation of viruses, the pathogenesis of viral infections and their pathology, serology, immunity, and, finally, epidemiology and control. It is hoped that this book will be valuable to those interested in a variety of other biological sciences.

Book Viral Pathogenesis and Immunity

Download or read book Viral Pathogenesis and Immunity written by Neal Nathanson and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This text provides a coherent and concise introduction to the field of viral pathogenesis and immunity. The text is divided into four sections which highlight the fundamental principles within this field of study. Section 1, Essentials of Viral Pathogenesis, describes the sequential events in viral infection, the localization of viral infections and the variety of virus-cell interactions. Section 2, Host Responses to Viral Infection, examines immune responses including virus-induced immunopathology and immunosuppression. Section 3, Virus-Host Interactions, covers virulence, viral persistence, virus-induced oncogenesis and host susceptibility. Section 4, Prevention of Viral Infections, explains the key principles of vaccine development.

Book Vascular Responses to Pathogens

Download or read book Vascular Responses to Pathogens written by Felicity N.E. Gavins and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2015-10-31 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Vascular Responses to Pathogens focuses on the growing research from leaders in the field for both the short and long-term impact of pathogens on the vasculature. It discusses various organisms, including bacteria, parasites, and viruses, and their role in key events leading to vascular disease. Formatted to discuss the topic of the interaction of pathogens with the vascular rather than individual diseases described separately, this reference demonstrates that common mechanisms are at play in many different diseases because they have a similar context, their vasculature. This all-inclusive reference book is a must-have tool for researchers and practicing clinicians in the areas of vascular biology, microvasculature, cardiology, and infectious disease. Covers a wide spectrum of organisms and provides analysis of pathogens and current therapeutic strategies in the context of their vasculature Provides detailed perspectives on key components contributing to vascular pathogens from leaders in the field Interfaces between both vascular biology and microbiology by encompassing information on how pathogens affect both macro and microvasculature Includes coverage of the clinical aspects of sepsis and current therapeutic strategies and anti-sepsis drugs

Book Global Health Impacts of Vector Borne Diseases

Download or read book Global Health Impacts of Vector Borne Diseases written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2016-10-21 with total page 397 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pathogens transmitted among humans, animals, or plants by insects and arthropod vectors have been responsible for significant morbidity and mortality throughout recorded history. Such vector-borne diseases â€" including malaria, dengue, yellow fever, and plague â€" together accounted for more human disease and death in the 17th through early 20th centuries than all other causes combined. Over the past three decades, previously controlled vector-borne diseases have resurged or reemerged in new geographic locations, and several newly identified pathogens and vectors have triggered disease outbreaks in plants and animals, including humans. Domestic and international capabilities to detect, identify, and effectively respond to vector-borne diseases are limited. Few vaccines have been developed against vector-borne pathogens. At the same time, drug resistance has developed in vector-borne pathogens while their vectors are increasingly resistant to insecticide controls. Furthermore, the ranks of scientists trained to conduct research in key fields including medical entomology, vector ecology, and tropical medicine have dwindled, threatening prospects for addressing vector-borne diseases now and in the future. In June 2007, as these circumstances became alarmingly apparent, the Forum on Microbial Threats hosted a workshop to explore the dynamic relationships among host, pathogen(s), vector(s), and ecosystems that characterize vector-borne diseases. Revisiting this topic in September 2014, the Forum organized a workshop to examine trends and patterns in the incidence and prevalence of vector-borne diseases in an increasingly interconnected and ecologically disturbed world, as well as recent developments to meet these dynamic threats. Participants examined the emergence and global movement of vector-borne diseases, research priorities for understanding their biology and ecology, and global preparedness for and progress toward their prevention, control, and mitigation. This report summarizes the presentations and discussions from the workshop.
