Book excerpt: In this book, the physiologic bases of ocular immune privilege and the distinctive systemic immune responses elicited by eye derived antigens are described. Several chapters discuss the pathogeneses of these disorders which arise from infections, autoimmunity, and neoplasms. Finally, chapters devoted to corneal and retinal transplantation describe attempts to exploit ocular immune privilege to promote graft survival and thereby cure blindness. This book was released on 2007-01-01 with total page 357 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In memory of J. Wayne Streilein, the pioneer in ocular immunology The second edition of Immune Response and the Eye' highlights recent insights into the dangerous compromise' between the immune system and the eye, which protects the eye against pathogens while limiting inflammation and immune-mediated injury to ocular tissues with little or no regenerative potential. It discusses the broad spectrum of physiological, immunological, anatomical, and biochemical adaptations that conspire to closely regulate the tone and tenor of immune responses in the eye. This volume further describes immune-mediated diseases that occur when the compromise between the immune system and the eye is breached. This breakdown in immune privilege threatens the vision of millions each year. Finally, recent advances in ocular immunology are presented, which offer potential therapeutic applications in corneal and retinal transplantation and in the management of blinding autoimmune diseases of the eye. Eye researchers, ophthalmologists and immunologists will appreciate the state-of-the-art and authoritative information presented in Immune Response and the Eye'

Book Immunology of Eye Diseases

Download or read book Immunology of Eye Diseases written by S. Lightman and published by Springer. This book was released on 2011-10-05 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The eye can become involved in immune-mediated diseases that affect it alone or as part of a multi-organ disease process. Much immunological attention has been focused on other organs affected by these processes and the subject of the immunology of eye diseases is a relatively new one. Many of these diseases that involve the eye are not life-threatening but can result in devastat ing loss of sight that if bilateral, will have major effects on the patient's life. Systemic immunological investigations are generally unhelpful in these patients and one of the major problems in this field has been the lack of diseased tissue available for examination to determine the pathological processes involved. Our poor understanding of basic mechanisms of disease in the eye has meant that treatment of many of these conditions is often inadequate. It has become possible to apply in the eye many ofthe techniques used to investigate the role of the immune system in other systems. Animal models of many of the disease processes have also allowed dissection of the immune response both within and outside the eye. It is my belief that a greater understanding of the mechanisms by which the structures in the eye become damaged will allow more specific and effective therapeutic strategies to be devised.

Download or read book Common Eye Infections written by Imtiaz Chaudhry and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2013-05-08 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since ocular infections are one of the most frequent occurrences in ophthalmology, the treatment for these infections must be fast, precise and effective. In order to address this goal, it is important to identify and characterize the culprit microorganisms involved in the pathogenesis of ocular infections. Clinical diagnosis of ocular infections can be confirmed by several techniques based on microbiological test of ocular samples. Some of these techniques include classic microbiological testing in which it is necessary to isolate microorganisms to characterize them by biochemical analysis which require significant resources and timing.

Download or read book The Iris written by Kambiz Thomas Moazed and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-07-24 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The iris is a circular, pigmented tissue that separates the anterior chamber of the eye from the posterior chamber. It has a crucial role on controlling the amount of the light entering the eye through its central opening “the pupil". The Iris has multiple important functions that support and provide image clarity on the retina. However, it is a largely neglected part of the eye, compared to the cornea lens, retina, and optic nerve, and has not been focused on in a comprehensive way until now. The Iris: Understanding the Essentials, combines different aspects of scientific information from a variety of fields, such as anatomy, histopathology, molecular biology, electron microscopy and other diagnostic modalities. Each chapter will include pearls and summary points, and this multi-disciplinary approach helps the clinician diagnose and treat the large variety of diseases that affect the iris, with the main emphasize on pigmentary pathological changes that can affect the color of the eye. Written as a reference review book for universities, practicing ophthalmologists, Ophthalmology residents, pharmaceutical companies and diagnostic equipment manufacturing companies this book summarizes the information in an easy-to-use manner to help the reader better understand the iris, iris structure, physiology and function.

Book Immuno ophthalmology

To many ophthalmologists immunology itself is a comparatively new field. This volume will bring the latest findings in immunological research and the resulting new therapy methods to the ophthalmologist in practice. The scope of the topics goes from general principles of immuno-ophthalmology to more specific ones such as immunology of corneal transplantation or immune regulation of uveoretinal inflammation. With its broad scope of contributions, this publication will not only be significant to the ophthalmologist, but also to pediatricians, specialists in internal medicine as well as dermatologists confronted with eye diseases.

Book Complications in Uveitis

    Book Details:
  • Author : Francesco Pichi
  • Publisher : Springer Nature
  • Release : 2020-01-27
  • ISBN : 3030283925
  • Pages : 276 pages

Download or read book Complications in Uveitis written by Francesco Pichi and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-01-27 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book will focus for the first time on how to avoid complications of uveitis, or how to deal with them either surgically or medically. Its uniqueness lies in the fact that all other books available on the subject of uveitis concentrate on pathogenesis, natural course, diagnosis and treatment of the uveitic entity itself, barely touching complications arising from inflammation. This book will be divided in chapters, each of them concentrating on a particular portion of the eye, from front to back, and how it can get affected by complications from inflammation. Inflammatory diseases causing these complications will be just superficially touched, the main focus will be the pathogenesis of the actual complication, prevention and treatment. Every chapter will be introduced by a section by a uveitis specialist on how inflammation can cause that particular complication, and how we can avoid it. Then a specialist in the sector (cornea surgeon, glaucoma surgeon, etc) will describe management of the complication. This multi-disciplinary approach to complications of uveitis will provide to the readers the tools to prevent them, or to correctly manage the. It will be a book mainly directed to uveitis specialist but that could also interest other specialists.
