Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Immortality and Modern Thought The doctrine of Immortality, like the poor, we have ever with us. It is a subject of perennial preciousness. Countless multitudes are ever on the alert for the latest book and the last word on the one subject that never loses its vital interest. From the first funeral service, held as it was over the slain body of Abel, to the latest mound erected over the most recently departed loved one, the human soul has pulsated with immortal inquiries. When Job stood down in the shadows and propounded his momentous question, "If a man die, shall he live again?" – he projected a problem that has presented itself anew to every succeeding generation. Truth is eternal; the forms and phraseology of its expression are temporary and must ever change with increasing information. The same truth may appear in a different light when seen from a new viewpoint and from an advanced position of attainment in scholarship. A change in viewpoint does not mean the surrender of the essential truth, and a description of the sensation of the larger vision should not be classified as heresy. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Immortality: A Study of Belief and Earlier Addresses Little by little, week by week, Dr. Clarke laid before us his whole thought, quite honestly and directly, but so quietly and simply and reasonably that there was no place for surprise or alarm; only a steadily growing sense of light, of freedom, of well-being. Never was preaching more perfectly expressive of the preacher. The singleness of aim, the refusal to be distracted by non essentials, the unswerving quest of reality, the boundless comprehension, the unfailing sympathy, the invincible peace, which were the notes of every sermon, were the qualities of the man. Even the brief, pregnant sentences that linger in one's memory after all the years have his stamp upon them. Religion is the humble life of a filial soul with the good God. God's thought of us is the steady thought Of love and wisdom. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
