Book Immortal Prairie and Other Poems

Download or read book Immortal Prairie and Other Poems written by James H. Ransom and published by FriesenPress. This book was released on 2015-06-02 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: James Ransom presents readers with poems covering an astonishing diversity of subjects. There are iconic echoes in some of them-Auden, Eliot and Shakespeare, as well as John Crowe Ransom and Christian Wiman-but comprehending the poems is never dependent on the reader's scholarship. These poems are plain-spoken and heartfelt. The subjects include observations of nature-prairie landscapes of Kansas (title poem) as well as the crags and forests of Scotland. You will be taken to an emergency room and surgery; you will also read about the arson of a church, even the demise of a fish. There are lessons from history and ironic observations about poetry itself. A sense of humor is found in unexpected places. Ransom reflects on childhood and maturity, and on his love and admiration for family members with challenges to meet. He is not afraid to confront questions of religion and faith in unorthodox ways. Political themes are not taboo here, but neither do they dominate. For a clash of cultures, read "Interview From Kotzebue." Or try "Darfur." Unlike the tradition of most books of poetry, Ransom includes photos and paintings. He believes that we live immersed in a culture of image and motion, which can be used to add another dimension to some poems. In that sense, this book is an experiment. If you have been confused, bored or disappointed by modern poetry, this book may help you re-engage.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Immortal: A Dramatic Romance; And Other Poems Friend of my heart! - friend of the human race! Though I may never gaze upon thy face, Nor clasp the hand that has such wonders penned; Yet when entranced by thy prevailing spell, I watch the ebbing life of gentle Paul, Or looking up, as at an angel's call, Pursue the heavenward flight of "Little Nell," Heart leaps to heart, and I embrace my Friend! It hath been given to thy hand to trace All that is good and glorious in our race, As with an "angel's ken" thou hast divined The riches in the human heart enshrined; Crowns, sceptres, laurel wreaths, or robes of state, Thy genius needs not, to reveal the great. Greatness is only greatness in itself, - It rests not in externals, nor its worth Derives from gorgeous pomp, or glittering pelf, Or chance of arms, or accident of birth; About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: “A highly recommended literary page-turner worth a second reading; fans of Gabriel García Márquez will delight in this fantastical—and fantastic novel.”—Library Journal, starred review "Impactful . . . Araghi’s skillful combination of revolutionary politics and magical realism will please fans of Alejo Carpentier."—Publishers Weekly A sweeping, multigenerational epic, this stunning debut heralds the arrival of a unique new literary voice. As a child living in his family's apple orchard, Ahmad Torkash-Vand treasures his great-great-great-great grandfather's every mesmerizing word. On the day of his father's death, Ahmad listens closely as the seemingly immortal elder tells him the tale of a centuries-old family curse . . . and the boy's own fated role in the story. Ahmad grows up to suspect that something must be interfering with his family, as he struggles to hold them together through decades of famine, loss, and political turmoil in Iran. As the world transforms around him, each turn of Ahmad's life is a surprise: from street brawler, to father of two unusually gifted daughters; from radical poet, to politician with a target on his back. These lives, and the many unforgettable stories alongside his, converge and catch fire at the center of the Revolution. Exploring the brutality of history while conjuring the astonishment of magical realism, The Immortals of Tehran is a novel about the incantatory power of words and the revolutionary sparks of love, family, and poetry--set against the indifferent, relentless march of time.
