Book Nations of Immigrants

Download or read book Nations of Immigrants written by J. P. Nieuwenhuysen and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2009-01-01 with total page 219 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These papers capture the pluralist phenomenon of two of the largest immigrant-receiving countries of all time. Within this 200+ page volume, then, is to be found a truly informative mass of data (complete with graphs, tables and statistics) and learned analyses pertaining to the twin-focus of its title which will serve as a valuable tool of reference and reflection by all who have an interest in the subject. Ramnik Shah, Immigration, Asylum and Nationality Law This timely book examines the immense surges in immigration since the mid-1990s in Australia and the United States, two of the world s most important settler-receiving countries. Australia s shift to a points-based, skills-oriented system is contrasted with the political deadlock that has prevented any basic change in US immigration policy during this period. Focusing on immigration policy trends, effects on labour markets, successes and failures in integrating massive numbers of new immigrants, and the future of multiculturalism, the book ponders many of the policy dilemmas that confront both countries. Drawing on extensive research findings in the field of immigration policy, this book will prove a fascinating read for both scholars and postgraduate students working on immigration, as well as undergraduates studying courses on Australia and comparisons of the Australian and American policy arenas. Public servants engaged in administering Australian and US immigration policies will also find this book invaluable.

Book Immigration and the Financial Crisis

Download or read book Immigration and the Financial Crisis written by John Higley and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2011 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Structural needs for immigrant labour in health care, restaurant, tourism, agricultural and other economic sectors, together with harsher economic circumstances in most sending countries, almost certainly ensure the continuation of large-scale immigration to the US and Australia. But in harder times, especially in the US, sustaining this immigration while managing immigrants' economic and social integration are daunting tasks. This illuminating book analyses how well, and in what ways, the US and Australia will meet these challenges. This companion volume to Nations of Immigrants examines immigration to the US and Australia during the difficult economic times following the paralysis of financial firms and markets in New York and London during autumn 2008, quickly affecting Australia and most other OECD countries. The contributors prominent American and Australian immigration specialists discuss how the financial crisis has altered the nexus of domestic labour markets and immigration, how public fears spurred by harder times are affecting border protection and support for immigration, whether serious abrasions between foreign- and native-born populations are being kindled, and the extent to which the politics of immigration are being transformed. Immigration and the Financial Crisis will prove a thought provoking read for academics and students with an interest in immigration, and American and Australian policy arenas. The book will also prove an invaluable reference tool for public servants engaged in administering US and Australian immigration policies.

Book Immigration Policy and the Search for Skilled Workers

Download or read book Immigration Policy and the Search for Skilled Workers written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2015-12-29 with total page 155 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The market for high-skilled workers is becoming increasingly global, as are the markets for knowledge and ideas. While high-skilled immigrants in the United States represent a much smaller proportion of the workforce than they do in countries such as Australia, Canada, and the United Kingdom, these immigrants have an important role in spurring innovation and economic growth in all countries and filling shortages in the domestic labor supply. This report summarizes the proceedings of a Fall 2014 workshop that focused on how immigration policy can be used to attract and retain foreign talent. Participants compared policies on encouraging migration and retention of skilled workers, attracting qualified foreign students and retaining them post-graduation, and input by states or provinces in immigration policies to add flexibility in countries with regional employment differences, among other topics. They also discussed how immigration policies have changed over time in response to undesired labor market outcomes and whether there was sufficient data to measure those outcomes.

Book Population Migration and Settlement in Australia and the Asia Pacific

Download or read book Population Migration and Settlement in Australia and the Asia Pacific written by Natascha Klocker and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-12-07 with total page 389 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The chapters in this book reflect on the work of seminal Australian geographer, the late Professor Graeme Hugo. Graeme Hugo was widely respected because of his impressive contributions to scholarship and policy in the fields of migration, population and development, which spanned several decades. This collection of works contains contributions from authors whose own research has been influenced by Hugo; and includes numerous authors who worked closely with Hugo throughout his career. The collection provides an opportunity to reflect on Hugo’s legacy, and also to foreground contemporary scholarship in his key areas of research focus. The chapters are organised into two thematic threads. Part I contains works relating to ‘Population, Migration and Settlement in Australia’, while Part II focuses on ‘Labour and Environmental Migration in the Asia-Pacific’. Together, these two thematic threads provide broad coverage of Graeme Hugo’s key areas of research focus. The chapters also serve as a reminder of Hugo’s steadfast concern with producing careful scholarship for the public good, and seek to prompt continued work in this vein. The chapters originally published in special issues in Australian Geographer.

Download or read book People Policy written by Kenneth Douglas Cocks and published by UNSW Press. This book was released on 1996 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This lively and readable contribution to the optical debate on Australia's population and immigration policy (or lack of it) comes from one of the country's best known and most authoritative environmental writers. People Policy contains a wide-ranging, multidisciplinary, informative review of the background to, studies on and approaches to population policy. It draws heavily on submissions to the House of Representatives' committee of inquiry into Australia's population (the Jones Inquiry), which the author served as a consultant. Ever assertive and controversial, yet backing up his points with facts and figures, Doug Cocks puts the case for stabilising Australia's population through powerful arguments drawn from environmental, ecological, economic, social and quality-of-life considerations, balancing his personal views by outlining the full range of cases to be made and choices facing the country. People Policy is for general readers with environmental, green, political and social interests relating to human population studies; it has a glossary of demographic terms to assist lay readers. Being fully referenced with an extensive bibliography, it is also useful for students taking demography, population studies, population & human resources, and human ecology units in Geography, Environmental Studies, Demography, Population Studies, Social Policy, and Urban and Regional Planning programs. It will also interest demographers, planners and policymakers dealing with migration, social and economic development, and urban and regional planning.
