Download or read book A Place Called Home written by Jack Leonard and published by IAP. This book was released on 2021-05-01 with total page 307 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Describing global trends in forced displacement in 2019, Filippo Grandi, United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees declared that “we are witnessing a changed reality in that forced displacement nowadays is not only vastly more widespread but is simply no longer a short-term and temporary phenomenon”. At the end of 2019, almost 80 million people had been forced to leave the place they called home “as a result of persecution, conflict, violence, human rights violations or events seriously disturbing public order,” according to the United Nations High Commission for Refugees. This volume presents the concerted efforts of chapter contributors to alleviate the alienation of those who have been displaced and help them to feel at home in the country in which they have sought refuge. Chapter contributors highlight their endeavors specifically with Latino, Hmong, and African immigrants in the United States and Canada, as well as with a veritable united nations of immigrant identities in general. Endeavors oriented to making immigrants feel at home inevitably raise the vexed question of what it means to be a good member of a society—regardless of whether one is a citizen.

Download or read book Immigrant Steps to American Dream written by MR Sid K Vaidya and published by Diamonds of Diversity LLC. This book was released on 2013-09-01 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sid Vaidya's Immigrant Steps to American Dream features his "Diamonds of Diversity" plan for success. Using Baseball as a metaphor, Sid shows you how to succeed one base at a time! You're up! "From the time I arrived in the USA at the age of 19 as a poor, hungry and driven immigrant in December 1966, it took me years to achieve sustained success. For me, that meant having multiple homes, multiple cars and boats, lasting marriage to an American born white woman, highly educated successful children, a great career, great friends, money in the bank and travels around the world. For you, success might mean something altogether different. It is a personal journey. While I acknowledge that success does not mean happiness, I do believe happiness without success is elusive. Success is residue of diligence. I do not want to forget what I did right to get it. Therefore, I have documented my own secret of success. You cannot achieve something if you do not know what it is. You have to decide what you want. Having a vision will give you something to focus on. Begin where you are, with what you have. A current survey shows that 80% of the population, i.e. "Four out of five US adults" struggle with joblessness, near poverty or reliance on welfare for at least parts of their lives. It points to an increasing globalized US economy, the widening gap between 'haves' and 'have-nots' and a loss of good paying manufacturing jobs as reasons for the trend." While racial and ethnic minorities are more likely to live in poverty, hardship and pessimism are on the rise among 'working whites'. This book will show you that sustained success is ensued by a lifetime of commitment to doing the right things. Consider all of this as a buffet of information. Take what you like and try a few more times what you did not you might just like it. A wise man once told me, "When the student is ready, the teacher arrives." I believe you are ready!"

Book Governance in Immigrant Family Businesses

Download or read book Governance in Immigrant Family Businesses written by Daphne Halkias and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-22 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Family businesses constitute some of the most unique, complex, and dynamic systems in modern society. The blending of the performance-based world of business and the emotion-based domain of the family creates a system potentially fraught with confusion and conflict. The significant rise in immigrant family businesses adds a further level of complexity to this mix. Research into immigrant family businesses has been based on traditional, limited views of entrepreneurship largely ignoring the ethnic and family contexts that create the culture from which entrepreneurship emerges, making it impossible to understand the complex and interdependent relationships between an owning family, its firm, its governance and the community context in which the firm operates. These firms possess features that make their governance a challenging task. They depict a complex stakeholder structure, whereby the ownership stakes are passed from one generation to the next. The owning family's members usually play multiple roles, thereby blurring governance relationships. Governance in Immigrant Family Businesses explores the relationship between ethnic cultural influence in family businesses and its impact on corporate governance, addressing the intertwined influences of contractual, relational and cultural governance mechanisms and sets out a comprehensive theoretical model which clarifies the complexities involved in business planning, family harmony, and ethnic cultural variables. The authors specifically identify the implications for research, education, and practice. Application of their model will be of value to policy makers, consultants, business researchers and educators.
