Book Domestic Violence Against Latinas by Latino Males

Download or read book Domestic Violence Against Latinas by Latino Males written by Jenny Rivera and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cultural and racial differences must be central considerations to any strategy in the domestic violence movement. Latinas face multiple barriers because of their race, national origin, and gender, affecting how they experience and respond to domestic violence. This Article examines the various factors that are unique to the political, social an economic status of Latinas, drawing on statistics, demographic data, common representations and caricatures of Latinas and Latinos, and Latinas' own descriptions of violence. The Article employs critical race feminism to critique the most significant efforts currently within the legal and social service sectors to assist battered women. It challenges legislators and law enforcement officials to consider the different experiences and realities of women of color when designing effective law enforcement for violence between intimate partners, and to implement social service programs that meet the specific needs of battered Latina women. Language barriers and the historical experiences of Latinos and Latinas in the United States and recent immigrants' experiences in their countries of national origin, are also discussed as important considerations for designing legislative and judicial responses to interpersonal violence in the Latino community.

Book Hispanics and the Future of America

Download or read book Hispanics and the Future of America written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2006-02-23 with total page 502 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hispanics and the Future of America presents details of the complex story of a population that varies in many dimensions, including national origin, immigration status, and generation. The papers in this volume draw on a wide variety of data sources to describe the contours of this population, from the perspectives of history, demography, geography, education, family, employment, economic well-being, health, and political engagement. They provide a rich source of information for researchers, policy makers, and others who want to better understand the fast-growing and diverse population that we call "Hispanic." The current period is a critical one for getting a better understanding of how Hispanics are being shaped by the U.S. experience. This will, in turn, affect the United States and the contours of the Hispanic future remain uncertain. The uncertainties include such issues as whether Hispanics, especially immigrants, improve their educational attainment and fluency in English and thereby improve their economic position; whether growing numbers of foreign-born Hispanics become citizens and achieve empowerment at the ballot box and through elected office; whether impending health problems are successfully averted; and whether Hispanics' geographic dispersal accelerates their spatial and social integration. The papers in this volume provide invaluable information to explore these issues.

Book Intimate Partner Violence Prevention and Intervention

Download or read book Intimate Partner Violence Prevention and Intervention written by Anna C. Baldry and published by Nova Publishers. This book was released on 2008 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on the importance of assessing risk in domestic violence cases to prevent and reduce its escalation into homicide (so called uxoricide). Spousal killers in a substantial number of cases exhibit a history of prior spousal violence: in addition to this, witnessing violence has debilitating effects on children. For this reason domestic violence is also becoming a hot political issue on the European agenda. Integrating the US and Canadian experiences with the European ones increases the book's value and broadens perspectives. Assessing the risk and adopting appropriate measures can help reduce the risk of escalation of violence. It aims at gathering contributions from experts in the field of domestic violence and victimisation to present state of the art research in the risk assessment of domestic violence cases.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this project is first to create a more complete picture of the Latina experience of intimate partner violence (IPV) by exposing and demystifying the unique belief systems, values, norms, and aspects of Latino culture which make Latinas more susceptible to IPV as well as recognizing those vital cultural principles which may help prevent violence in future generations. Secondly, this project provides cross-culturally appropriate materials in the form of an informational guidebook containing suggestions for creating an atmosphere of advocacy and support as well as a step-by-step guide to working with Latinas based on an ecological perspective and Yalom's group therapy principles through a preventative lens. These materials are intended to aid mental health professionals in creating preventative IPV programs for Latinas in their own communities as well as overall increasing awareness, advocacy, and support for multicultural women living with IPV.

Book Counter Storytelling

  • Release : 2019
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 274 pages

Download or read book Counter Storytelling written by Marjory Shelley Vazquez and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research suggests that Latinas experience more severe forms of Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) and have more intense psychological and physical after-effects than their non-Latina counterparts (Bonomi, Anderson, Cannon, Slesnick, & Rodriguez, 2009; Caetano et al., 2005). Krishnan et al. (2001) found that Latina women show greater adverse mental health issues after experiencing IVP in their overall functioning, vitality, and role emotional functioning when compared to non-Latina women. There are additional barriers for Latina and undocumented survivors of IPV that live in conservative states such as the South due to repressive laws. In the South, there is a growing population of Mexican immigrants and anti-immigrations policies and laws. In response to the growing population, legislators chose to enact numerous policies and laws that target immigrants and mirror the Jim Crow laws (Lovato, 2008). Thus, the anti-immigrant legislation has been referred to as the Juan Crow laws. Current research on Latina IPV survivors focuses on the severity, help seeking behaviors, and mental health outcome for this population. Research specific to the southeast and GA supports these findings, but points to additional barriers Latinas may face such as extreme isolation. There is a paucity of research on the lived experiences of Latinas who survived IPV, much less from a qualitative and strengths-based perspective. Consequently, this dissertation is a qualitative based study utilizing a Narrative Inquiry methodological approach driven by a Latina/o Critical Theory (LatCrit) and Chicana/ Latina Feminist Theory framework to challenge the way IPV within the Latinx community is usually conceptualized by voicing the stories of Latinas who experienced IPV. This dissertation highlights the narratives of Latina survivors of intimate partner violent living in Georgia, a new immigrant settlement where the political climate is hostile while taking into account any language, cultural, and immigration concerns. Additionally, this dissertation explored the strengths utilized by the women while experiencing IPV. Results and implications are discussed, and future directions are presented.

Book Immigrant Latinas at Risk of Domestic Violence Mental Health Problems

Download or read book Immigrant Latinas at Risk of Domestic Violence Mental Health Problems written by Giselle Gaviria and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 37 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Latinos will constitute up to 29% of the United States population by 2050, although this percentage does not account for the many undocumented Latina arriving each year illegally. These women are predisposed to physical, sexual, and psychological exploitation. Research also shows they are placed at higher risk for mental health problems, medical problems and even death. Thus, immigrant women may have a heightened risk of becoming victims of domestic violence (DV). A systematic review was conducted to better understand whether immigrant Latinas are at increased risk of domestic violence, the mental health consequences for these women, and factors that enhance risk and aid in recovery.Literature was obtained by using electronic bibliographic database EBSCO and a manual search for reference lists of reviewed articles, as well as books relevant to the topic within the past a 15 years. Many studies indicate that immigrant Latinas are at greater risk of DV then other groups and may be more likely to return to their abusers then non-Latinas. PTSD, depression, and acculturative stress are prevalent in victims of domestic violence. Acculturation was found to be a significant risk factor for DV among immigrant Latinas but also served as an aid to recovery. There needs to be a continued effort to investigate domestic violence within immigrant Latinas. Reluctance to seek help and lack of information regarding services may perpetuate DV among this population. Culture specific prevention and treatment programs may help reduce and aid in recovery for these individuals.

Book Violence Never Heals

Download or read book Violence Never Heals written by Allison Bloom and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2023-06-27 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Explores experiences with disability and aging for immigrant survivors of domestic violence across the life course Across the United States, one in three women experiences violence in their intimate relationships. More resources are now being devoted to providing these women with immediate care; but what happens to survivors, especially those from marginalized communities, as they grow older and grapple with the long-term effects? In Violence Never Heals, Allison Bloom presents a life-course perspective on the disabling experience of violence in Latina immigrant communities. Drawing on extensive ethnographic fieldwork performed in a Latina program at an Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) crisis center, Bloom offers insights into the long-term effects of systemic and gender-based violence, revealing that these experiences become subtly disabling long before old age. Drawing from her own background as a practitioner, Bloom further details how current IPV services fail to acknowledge and accommodate such effects, in large part because of their disproportionate focus on younger survivors and the particular development of the domestic violence services field. She offers both scholars and practitioners concrete strategies for how they can alter their approaches to better treat and mitigate the lifelong effects of domestic violence. Violence Never Heals addresses a glaring omission in IPV scholarship, providing both an aging-focused perspective on IPV as well as laying out concrete steps for how to implement this perspective in pursuit of more comprehensive treatment.

Book The Handbook of Race Ethnicity Crime and Justice

Download or read book The Handbook of Race Ethnicity Crime and Justice written by Ramiro Martinez, Jr. and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2018-09-12 with total page 582 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Handbook presents current and future studies on the changing dynamics of the role of immigrants and the impact of immigration, across the United States and industrialized and developing nations. It covers the changing dynamics of race, ethnicity, and immigration, and discusses how it all contributes to variations in crime, policing, and the overall justice system. Through acknowledging that some groups, especially people of color, are disproportionately influenced more than others in the case of criminal justice reactions, the “War on Drugs”, and hate crimes; this Handbook introduces the importance of studying race and crime so as to better understand it. It does so by recommending that researchers concentrate on ethnic diversity in a national and international context in order to broaden their demographic and expand their understanding of how to attain global change. Featuring contributions from top experts in the field, The Handbook of Race and Crime is presented in five sections—An Overview of Race, Ethnicity, Crime, and Justice; Theoretical Perspectives on Race and Crime; Race, Gender, and the Justice System; Gender and Crime; and Race, Gender and Comparative Criminology. Each section of the book addresses a key area of research, summarizes findings or shortcomings whenever possible, and provides new results relevant to race/crime and justice. Every contribution is written by a top expert in the field and based on the latest research. With a sharp focus on contemporary race, ethnicity, crime, and justice studies, The Handbook of Race and Crime is the ideal reference for advanced undergraduate students, graduate students, and scholars interested in the disciplines such as Criminology, Race and Ethnicity, Race and the Justice System, and the Sociology of Race.

Book Healing From Violence

Download or read book Healing From Violence written by Christauria Welland, PsyD and published by Springer Publishing Company. This book was released on 2007-11-26 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: According to the 2000 Census, Latinos accounted for 12.5% of the US population, or 35.3 million residents-the fastest growing population in the United States. The influence of this large and growing demographic can be seen throughout every academic discipline in the numerous books, journals, and societies on multicultural assessment, counseling, and research that have begun to appear. However, one area of inquiry remains largely unexplored; domestic violence within Latino families. Although it appears that such violence occurs as frequently in Latino families as in Caucasian families, little research has been done on this topic and very few counseling programs explicitly developed for Latino families currently exist. Healing from Violence fills this void. Drawing on a research study of 150 Latino men who completed a year of court-ordered treatment in Southern California, and a four-year pilot study, the authors mix quantitative and qualitative methodology in order to provide counselors with an opportunity to hear first-hand how Latino partner abusive men think about manhood (machismo), interpersonal relationships, (respeto, personalismo, and simpatÌa), and family life (familismo). The authors then use these in-depth portraits to guide counselors in tailoring treatment plans to the specific needs of Latino men. Voices from Healing From Violence: "How should a Mexican man be? Respectful, understanding, loving, responsible. A good communicator. If a man had all that, and his partner too, wow! It would be great. I'd like to be like the man I just described - the ideal man, loving, respectful, all that." - Ramon "The whole time I've been in the program I've been doing something I had never done in my life - reflecting and taking stock of my own life. Putting the good and the bad in the balance." - Raul "One of the goals of group therapy, of any therapy, is to give hope. Even the man with the worst possible case, where he has lost his marriage and custody of his children, can learn to use respectful relationship skills at work and in a potential new relationship. He may have brought great losses upon himself, but his future is not necessarily bleak." - the Authors

Book Latinas Narratives of Domestic Abuse

Download or read book Latinas Narratives of Domestic Abuse written by Shonna L. Trinch and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2003-11-24 with total page 327 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the American legal system valid witness-testimony is supposed to be invariable and unchanging, so defense attorneys highlight seeming inconsistencies in victims’ accounts to impeach their credibility. This book offers an examination of how and why victims of domestic violence might seem to be ‘changing their stories,’ in the criminal justice system, which may leave them vulnerable to attack and criticism. Latinas’ Narratives of Domestic Abuse: Discrepant versions of violence investigates the discourse of protective order interviews, where women apply for court injunctions to keep abusers away. In these encounters, two different versions of violence, each influenced by a range of ethnolinguistic, intertextual and cultural factors, are always produced. This ethnography of Latina women narrating violence suggests that before victims even get to trial, their testimony involves much more than merely telling the truth. This book provides a unique look at pre-trial testimony as a collaborative and dynamic social and cultural act.

Book Immigrant Mothers in Abusive Relationships

Download or read book Immigrant Mothers in Abusive Relationships written by Michelle Fernandez and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Intimate partner violence is an important public health concern affecting millions of mothers and their children each year. Research suggests that Latina women, particularly immigrants, are at risk for victimization, face multiple barriers for help-seeking, and tend to remain in abusive relationships longer than their non-immigrant counterparts. Theoretical models used to explain Latinas' decisions to stay or leave an abusive relationship fail to capture many nuances and complexities of their experiences. This study relies on grounded theory methodology to construct a model to better understand Latina immigrant mothers' decision to stay or leave their abusing partners. Interviews with eight Latina immigrant mothers who were victims of intimate partner violence revealed a dynamic set of historical, psychological, and sociocultural forces that influence their decisions. Childhood experiences, family values, and self-perceptions contributed to inconsistent messages that made leaving an abusive relationship difficult. Connections (and disconnections) were identified as pronounced forces that provoked movement towards or away from making a decision. Uncertainty and dissonance is a key factor that was found to halt the process from flowing and impedes a woman from being able to make a decision and action. Implications for research and clinical practice are discussed.
