Book excerpt: After paying off her karmic debts through four decades of bad luck, Ellis Malone is on the cusp of uncovering the serendipitous splendor fate has in store for her. Ellis’ midlife career change to author brings fortuitous adventure with the film adaptation of her book, delivering to lifelong cinephile Ellis, the opportunity to live through her imagination from behind the scenes. When the man of her dreams, handsome actor, Alexander VonStraus, is cast as the movie’s leading role, she discovers that her inspiration for the character’s origins lie far beyond a simple fantasy. Remotely assisting Ellis in navigating through these uncharted experiences, best friend, Kimmie, whether help or hindrance, provides hilarious, psychosexually charged advice as a foul-mouthed personification of the human id, who must circumnavigate her own unique challenges along the way as well. Although at times, this duo’s language can be a soupçon ribald, a tad bawdy, or overly gratuitous with expletives, their adventurous journeys are usually worth a robust bit of laughter at the very least. Regardless of one's perspective, almost everything in life is always guaranteed to flow a little smoother with a positive attitude and an energetic sense of humor.

Download or read book The Immeasurable Mind written by William R. Uttal and published by Prometheus Books. This book was released on 2010-05 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is psychology a science? Unlike Darwinian theory in biology or relativity and quantum theory in physics, psychology lacks the basic quantitative or conceptual foundation for a consensus view about how the mind works. Is psychology on the verge of developing such a foundation? "Probably not," answers psychologist William R. Uttal in this iconoclastic and critical examination of psychology''s underlying principles, assumptions, and concepts. In five in-depth chapters and one appendix, he explores the following key issues: *What do we mean by "science" and can psychology be legitimately described as a science? *What are the general principles that should be applied to any science? *What is the role of mathematics in psychology? *Given the current fragmented state of the discipline, is it possible to identify the general principles of a scientific psychology? *Is experimental psychology just applied epistemology and not really scientific? Uttal comes to the conclusion that psychology is a science only to the extent that it is behaviorist in orientation. By comparing his discipline to other sciences, he identifies its limits, establishes a set of principles that help to define psychology as a science, and suggests plausible future developments.

Nothing like gene engineering, laser beams, sex hormones or international relations. That's where we don't want any breakthroughs. " (Galbraith, 1. K. (1990) A Tenured Profes sor, Houghton Mifflin; Boston. ) To judge astronomy] in this way a narrow utilitarian point of view] demon strates not only how poor we are, but also how small, narrow, and indolent our minds are; it shows a disposition always to calculate the payolTbefore the work, a cold heart and a lack of feeling for everything that is great and honors man. One can unfortunately not deny that such a mode of thinking is not uncommon in our age, and I am convinced that this is closely connected with the catastro phes which have befallen many countries in recent times; do not mistake me, I do not talk of the general lack of concern for science, but of the source from which all this has come, of the tendency to everywhere look out for one's advan tage and to relate everything to one's physical well-being, of the indilTerence towards great ideas, ofthe aversion to any elTort which derives from pure enthu siasm: I believe that such attitudes, if they prevail, can be decisive in catas trophes of the kind we have experienced. Download or read book God s Health Plan The Audacious Journey to a Better Life written by Ricki Pepin and published by Xulon Press. This book was released on 2007-09 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: GOD'S HEALTH PLAN - THE AUDACIOUS JOURNEY TO A BETTER LIFE A Principle Approach Study to Food, Health Care & Environmental Issues By Ricki Pepin A desperate Mom is willing to do a lot for a chronically ill child. After 12 years of disabling, undiagnosed sickness for her son, the author had all but lost hope. She began her own research to find relief for her child, unaware of the vast scope of the journey before her. Sickness carries not only physical, but spiritual roots. Health encompasses not just diet, but lifestyle choices, medical decisions and environmental issues. The solution to her son's dilemma came through prayer, study and application of seven biblical principles. God's health plan is about wholeness and restoration; adding life to your years, not just years to your life. It's not what you have to do. It's what you can do. God's health plan is not a destination. It's a daily journey - a sometimes audacious journey. Are you ready to begin yours? ."This book would be a valuable reference to anyone who wants to understand God's principles of health." - Bill Gothard, President - Institute in Basic Life Principles ."you will learn to better understand your God-designed body and how to care for it." - Dr. Bill Sears, widely known as "America's Pediatrician" Ricki Pepin is a wife, mother and grandmother. A former homeschool teacher to her children, she was introduced to the Principle Approach to education in 1991 and developed an enthusiastic vision for entire families to learn and apply the seven principles to every area of their lives. She does not set herself up as an expert on health, but rather equips the reader with the tools necessary to search out their own answers, as she did. Her excitement and hope are contagious as she spreads the message of personal and corporate stewardship practices that can change individual's lives and make this earth a healthier place for our great-great-grandchildren.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Economics plays a key role in human rights issues as decision-makers weigh the incentives associated with choosing how to use scarce resources in the context of committing or escaping human rights violence. This textbook provides an introduction to the microeconomic analysis of human rights utilizing economics as a lens through which to examine social topics including capital punishment, violence against women, asylum seeking, terrorism, child abuse, genocide, and hate. Whether analyzing the decisions made in capital punishment cases, the causes and consequences of genocide, or the impact of terrorist acts on domestic and international decision-making, the science of economics provides tools and a systematic method of analysis and policy recommendation. This key text presents a method for integrating the social sciences of economics and human rights to create new opportunities for the investigation of social issues. Within each chapter, readers gain a fundamental understanding of a specific human rights issue, the decision-makers and the decision-making process involved, and the benefits and costs leading to the decisions. Experts on each issue, drawn from a variety of fields, contribute to each chapter and present first-hand accounts and different perspectives on each issue. The detailed analyses and accounts provided also explore the potential incentives involved in the prevention and termination of human rights violations. Aiming to further economic inquiry and enhance interdisciplinary research, this textbook serves as a multi-purpose guide for a range of readers. Students, researchers, and educators, as well as those working in organizations supporting victims of human rights violations and policy-makers facing human rights challenges, will find this book informative and engaging.

Download or read book The Applied Law and Economics of Public Procurement written by Gustavo Piga and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-05-07 with total page 331 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores Public Procurement novelties and challenges in an interdisciplinary way. The process whereby the public sector awards contracts to companies for the supply of works, goods or services is a powerful instrument to ensure the achievement of new public goals as well as an efficient use of public funds. This book brings together the papers that have been presented during the "First Symposium on Public Procurement", a conference held in Rome last summer and to be repeated again yearly. As Public Procurement touches on many fields (law, economics, political science, engineering) the editors have used an interdisciplinary approach to discuss four main topics of interest which represent the four different parts in which this book is divided: Competitive dialogue and contractual design fostering innovation and need analysis, Separation of selection and award criteria, including exclusion of reputation indicators like references to experience, performance and CV’s from award criteria, Retendering a contract for breach of procurement rules or changes to contract (contract execution), Set-asides for small and medium firms, as in the USA system with the Small Business Act that reserves shares of tenders to SMEs only.
