Book The IMF Approach to Economic Stabilization

Download or read book The IMF Approach to Economic Stabilization written by Mr.Michael Mussa and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 1999-07-01 with total page 43 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper explains the IMF approach to economic stabilization. It argues that a Fund-supported program is a process, comprising six broadly defined phases, that evolves along a multiplicity of potential pathways. The paper discusses the three-pronged approach to stabilization at the core of all IMF-supported programs, stresses the iterative character of “financial programming,” and explains the rationale for setting quantitative performance criteria for fiscal and monetary policy in IMF-supported arrangements. A main theme is that IMF-supported programs contain a great deal of flexibility to respond both to differences in circumstances and to changes in conditions in individual cases.

Book Africa and IMF Conditionality

Download or read book Africa and IMF Conditionality written by Kwame Akonor and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-09-13 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ghana was one of the first African countries to adopt a comprehensive IMF reform program and the one that has sustained adjustment longest. Yet, questions of Ghana's compliance - to what extent did it comply, how did it manage compliance, what patterns of non-compliance existed, and why? - have not been systematically investigated and remain poorly understood. This book argues that understanding the domestic political environment is crucial in explaining why compliance, or the lack thereof, occurs. Akonor maintains that compliance with IMF conditionality in Ghana has had high political costs and thus, non-compliance occurred once the political survival of a regime was at stake.

Download or read book The IMF Monetary Model At Forty written by J. J. Polak and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 1997-04-01 with total page 21 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A model reflecting the monetary approach to the balance of payments was developed in the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in the 1950s. Its purpose was to integrate monetary, income, and balance of payments analysis, and it became the basis of the conditionality applied to IMF credits. Extremely simple, with primary focus on the balance of payments effects of credit creation by the banking system, the model has retained its usefulness for policy purposes over time, as it was adapted to changes in member countries’ priorities and in the international monetary system, in particular the disappearance of the par value system.

Book Law and Policy of IMF Conditionality

Download or read book Law and Policy of IMF Conditionality written by Erik M.G. Denters and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2023-08-28 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: IMF conditionality has been severely criticised by developing countries, who accuse the Fund of unjustly provoking political turmoil and causing poverty. This refers to the policies that a member country is required to follow in order to be able to use the Fund's resources. Conditionality is legally based on the requirement to adopt `adequate safeguards' for the use of resources as stipulated by the IMF's Articles of Agreement. This work focuses on legal implications and policy aspects and, more specifically, on the question of how far-reaching the requirement of `adequate safeguards' may be. Furthermore, the author demonstrates that conditionality is also affected by cooperative arrangements with other institutions, such as the World Bank and United Nations. A major conclusion is that there should be improvements in cooperation and in the monitoring of the application of Fund law on conditionality. Scholars and students who take a deep interest in international economic relations will find this book a unique opportunity to study the legal framework of conditionality. Government officials preparing for negotiations with the Fund will also benefit from reading this work.
