Book Imaging of Surfaces and Interfaces

Download or read book Imaging of Surfaces and Interfaces written by Jacek Lipkowski and published by Wiley-VCH. This book was released on 1999-08-05 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pushing the frontiers of electrochemistry-a survey of new surface imaging techniques. This latest installment in the Frontiers of Electrochemistry series helps readers gain insight into one of the hottest areas of modern electrochemistry. Tracing recent advances in the imaging of electrified surfaces, this volume describes cutting-edge techniques that allow us to record real-time and real-space images with atomic resolution, observe structures of surfaces and interfaces directly on a display, study the distribution of atoms and molecules during a surface reaction, and much more. Leading international authorities discuss surface imaging techniques used in technologies involving electrocrystallization and electrodeposition of metals-employing numerous examples to demonstrate site specificity of electrode processes, and discussing applications to electronic materials such as the capacity to print nanopatterns at electrode surfaces. They cover techniques that advance our understanding of the properties of organic films and surfaces and interfaces, including scanning electron microscopy and microprobes and atomic force microscopy. Finally, they review the theory of electron tunneling at the metal/solution interface, helping readers interpret images of electrode surfaces obtained by scanning tunneling microscopy. Designed to meet the needs of specialists and nonspecialists alike, Imaging of Surfaces and Interfaces provides plenty of background material along with eight color plates. It is an important resource for scientists involved in electrochemistry, surface science, materials science, and electrodeposition technologies.

Book Surface and Interface Characterization by Electron Optical Methods

Download or read book Surface and Interface Characterization by Electron Optical Methods written by Ugo Valdre and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The importance of real space imaging and spatially-resolved spectroscopy in many of the most significant problems of surface and interface behaviour is almost self evident. To join the expertise of the tradi tional surface scientist with that of the electron microscopist has however been a slow and difficult process. In the past few years remarkable progress has been achieved, including the development of new techniques of scanning transmission and reflection imaging as well as low energy microscopy, all carried out in greatly improved vacuum conditions. Most astonishing of all has been the advent of the scanning tunneling electron microscope providing atomic resolution in a manner readily compatible with most surface science diagnostic procedures. The problem of beam damage, though often serious, is increasingly well understood so that we can assess the reliability and usefulness of the results which can now be obtained in catalysis studies and a wide range of surface science applications. These new developments and many others in more established surface techniques are all described in this book, based on lectures given at a NATO Advanced Study Institute held in Erice, Sicily, at Easter 1987. It is regretted that a few lectures on low energy electron diffraction and channeling effects could not be included. Fifteen lecturers from seven different Countries and 67 students from 23 Countries and a wide variety of backgrounds attended the school.

Book High Resolution Imaging and Spectrometry of Materials

Download or read book High Resolution Imaging and Spectrometry of Materials written by Frank Ernst and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 454 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The characterisation of materials and material systems is an essential aspect of materials science. A few decades ago it became obvious that, because the properties of materials depend so critically on the microstructure of their components, this characterisation must be determined to the atomic level. This means that the position - as well as the nature - of individual atoms has to be determined at "critical" regions close to defects such as dislocations, interfaces, and surfaces. The great impact of advanced transmission electron microscopy (TEM) techniques became apparent in the area of semiconducting materials, where the nature of internal interfaces between silicon and the corresponding silicides could be identified, and the results used to enhance the understanding of the properties of the compounds studied. At that time, advanced TEM techniques existed predominantly in the US. However, advanced TEM instrumentation was not available in the ma terials science and solid-state science communities in Germany. This gap was bridged by the late Peter Haasen who, after a visit to the US, initiated a Priority Programme on Microstructural Characterisation at the Volkswagen Foundation (Hannover). The programme was in effect from 1985 to 1997 and supported a wide range of research projects - from fundamental, trendy, innovative projects to projects in applied materials science.
