Book Time dependent Problems in Imaging and Parameter Identification

Download or read book Time dependent Problems in Imaging and Parameter Identification written by Barbara Kaltenbacher and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-02-23 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inverse problems such as imaging or parameter identification deal with the recovery of unknown quantities from indirect observations, connected via a model describing the underlying context. While traditionally inverse problems are formulated and investigated in a static setting, we observe a significant increase of interest in time-dependence in a growing number of important applications over the last few years. Here, time-dependence affects a) the unknown function to be recovered and / or b) the observed data and / or c) the underlying process. Challenging applications in the field of imaging and parameter identification are techniques such as photoacoustic tomography, elastography, dynamic computerized or emission tomography, dynamic magnetic resonance imaging, super-resolution in image sequences and videos, health monitoring of elastic structures, optical flow problems or magnetic particle imaging to name only a few. Such problems demand for innovation concerning their mathematical description and analysis as well as computational approaches for their solution.

Book Porous and Complex Flow Structures in Modern Technologies

Download or read book Porous and Complex Flow Structures in Modern Technologies written by Adrian Bejan and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2004-04-29 with total page 418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Porous and Complex Flow Structures in Modern Technologies represents a new approach to the field, considering the fundamentals of porous media in terms of the key roles played by these materials in modern technology. Intended as a text for advanced undergraduates and as a reference for practicing engineers, the book uses the physics of flows in porous materials to tie together a wide variety of important issues from such fields as biomedical engineering, energy conversion, civil engineering, electronics, chemical engineering, and environmental engineering. Thus, for example, flows of water and oil through porous ground play a central role in energy exploration and recovery (oil wells, geothermal fluids), energy conversion (effluents from refineries and power plants), and environmental engineering (leachates from waste repositories). Similarly, the demands of miniaturization in electronics and in biomedical applications are driving research into the flow of heat and fluids through small-scale porous media (heat exchangers, filters, gas exchangers). Filters, catalytic converters, the drying of stored grains, and a myriad of other applications involve flows through porous media. By providing a unified theoretical framework that includes not only the traditional homogeneous and isotropic media but also models in which the assumptions of representative elemental volumes or global thermal equilibrium fail, the book provides practicing engineers the tools they need to analyze complex situations that arise in practice. This volume includes examples, solved problems and an extensive glossary of symbols.

Book Modeling Density Driven Flow in Porous Media

Download or read book Modeling Density Driven Flow in Porous Media written by Ekkehard O. Holzbecher and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modeling of flow and transport in groundwater has become an important focus of scientific research in recent years. Most contributions to this subject deal with flow situations, where density and viscosity changes in the fluid are neglected. This restriction may not always be justified. The models presented in the book demonstrate immpressingly that the flow pattern may be completely different when density changes are taken into account. The main applications of the models are: thermal and saline convection, geothermal flow, saltwater intrusion, flow through salt formations etc. This book not only presents basic theory, but the reader can also test his knowledge by applying the included software and can set up own models.

Book Fluid Flow and Heat Transfer in Porous Media Manufactured by a Space Holder Method

Download or read book Fluid Flow and Heat Transfer in Porous Media Manufactured by a Space Holder Method written by Xianke Lu and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-08-27 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on the effects of the material, porosity, pore size and pore shape on flow behaviour and heat transfer in microscale porous media manufactured using a space holder method. It also describes a novel approach to studying flow behaviour in non-transparent materials such as porous metals via flow visualization in transparent media that mimic the porous structure. The book employs a combination of microparticle image velocimetry – a modern, advanced technique – and pressure drop measurement – a more traditional method – that makes the mechanistic study of several phenomena possible. It covers the identification of various flow regimes and their boundaries, velocity profiles on the microscale, the heat transfer coefficient under forced convection, and the correlation between flow behaviour on the pore scale and the convective heat transfer performance of the porous media. Understanding the fundamentals of porous flow, especially on the microscale, is critical for applications of porous media in heat exchangers, catalytic convertors, chemical reactors, filtration and oil extraction. Accordingly, this book offers a valuable resource for all researchers, graduate students and engineers working in the areas of porous flow and porous materials.

Book A Method for Computing Unsteady Flows in Porous Media

Download or read book A Method for Computing Unsteady Flows in Porous Media written by R Raghavan and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-11-22 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Self-contained and concise, this Research Note provides a basis to study unsteady flow in saturated porous media. It provides for the development of algorithms that examine three-dimensional flows subject to complicated boundary conditions that are a natural consequence of flow in geological systems. A new way to understand the flow in porous media is presented. The authors pay attention to computational considerations, and options for developing codes are addressed. The note consists of five chapters: the first is introductory; the second and third are devoted to showing how one arrives at the solutions of interest; the fourth chapter presents various reformulations to aid computations and presents a few illustrative examples; the fifth chapter is a natural progression of the first four chapters to more complicated visualizations of flow in porous media.

Book A Computational Evaluation of Flow Through Porous Media

Download or read book A Computational Evaluation of Flow Through Porous Media written by Dimpho Millicent Mothibi and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2011-08 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The understanding and quantitative description of fluid flow through porous media, is a science which has been going on for many years and investigated in a variety of disciplines. Studies in this field have primarily been based on models, which can either be described as empirical or theoretical. Part of the current study is to understand fluid flow in porous media through studying three recent theoretical pore-scale models based on the concept of a Representative Unit Cell (RUC), to represent a porous medium. Amongst other assumptions, these models assumed plane Poiseuille flow throughout each pore section of a rectangular RUC. The main objective of this study is to numerically verify this assumption using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) software, FLUENT version 6.2.16. Attention is also paid to comparison between these models with the experimental data, obtained during the model tests of airflow through a timber stack end, undertaken in a wind tunnel. The laminar and intermediate airflow through a timber stack end is simulated using the commercial software FLUENT, and the results are validated against the theoretical pore-scale models and experimental data.

Book Imaging Techniques Applied to the Study of Fluids in Porous Media

Download or read book Imaging Techniques Applied to the Study of Fluids in Porous Media written by and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Improved imaging techniques were used to study the dynamics of fluid flow and trapping at various scales in porous media. Two-phase and three-phase floods were performed and monitored by computed tomography (CT) scanning and/or nuclear magnetic resonance imaging (NMRI) microscopy. Permeability-porosity correlations obtained from image analysis were combined with porosity distributions from CT scanning to generate spatial permeability distributions within the core which were used in simulations of two-phase floods. Simulation-derived saturation distributions of two-phase processes showed very good agreement with the CT measured values.
