Well, they are desperate to revive a Tape Player obtained by them during the height of our space program. What make this Tape Player so important to them is its content - a cassette with the music of 1967 Earth's rising star - Jimi Hendrix, which they became addicted to. When this device batteries died, the aliens left with no choice but to invade our planet in a search for a new stock. While on Earth, they would encounter California's varied population of the early 70's: Hippies; Black Panthers; the rest of us; and Jimi Hendrix himself. This exposure to our "Culture" will force them to make a crucial decision about their future. If you wonder why this 1970 invasion of California, USA never happened? The answer is quite simple - We ignored them...

Book WAR OF THE WORLDS

Download or read book WAR OF THE WORLDS written by Randy Zimmerman and published by Caliber Comics. This book was released on 2016-11-24 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sequel to H.G. Wells science fiction classic The War of the Worlds. The "Martian Invasion" has begun again and now mankind must fight, not only for their homes, but for their very humanity. Aliens were the stuff of legends, fairy tales, to scare children or to entertain those wanting to escape the mundane existence of their lives. Few men took them seriously, let alone saw them as a threat. Yet as mankind busied itself about their petty affairs, they were being scrutinized and studied, perhaps as narrowly as a scientist might watch under the microscope of the microbes that swarm and multiply in a drop of water. It happened slowly at first but by the third year, it seemed that the war was almost lost. And humanity was not going to be the winner. This story picks up with mankind fighting a fallback battle in the central plains of the United States against a new kind of biological weapon the aliens have unleashed on the planet. It centers on a group of surviving individuals who differ as to how they should live their future...either quietly hold down and go about their business and leave the aliens to the planet...or continue to fight a seemingly hopeless war and go out dying standing on one's own two feet. And this is their story. "Writer Randy Zimmerman has a fine grasp of drama, and spins the various strands of the story into a coherent whole...imaginative and very gritty." - war-of-the-worlds.co.uk

Book The Cultural Imaginary of Terrorism in Public Discourse Literature and Film

Download or read book The Cultural Imaginary of Terrorism in Public Discourse Literature and Film written by Michael C. Frank and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2017-06-14 with total page 307 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study investigates the overlaps between political discourse and literary and cinematic fiction, arguing that both are informed by, and contribute to, the cultural imaginary of terrorism. Whenever mass-mediated acts of terrorism occur, they tend to trigger a proliferation of threat scenarios not only in the realm of literature and film but also in the statements of policymakers, security experts, and journalists. In the process, the discursive boundary between the factual and the speculative can become difficult to discern. To elucidate this phenomenon, this book proposes that terror is a halfway house between the real and the imaginary. For what characterizes terrorism is less the single act of violence than it is the fact that this act is perceived to be the beginning, or part, of a potential series, and that further acts are expected to occur. As turn-of-the-century writers such as Stevenson and Conrad were the first to point out, this gives terror a fantastical dimension, a fact reinforced by the clandestine nature of both terrorist and counter-terrorist operations. Supported by contextual readings of selected texts and films from The Dynamiter and The Secret Agent through late-Victorian science fiction to post-9/11 novels and cinema, this study explores the complex interplay between actual incidents of political violence, the surrounding discourse, and fictional engagement with the issue to show how terrorism becomes an object of fantasy. Drawing on research from a variety of disciplines, The Cultural Imaginary of Terrorism will be a valuable resource for those with interests in the areas of Literature and Film, Terrorism Studies, Peace and Conflict Studies, Trauma Studies, and Cultural Studies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the first book to consider British suburban literature from the vantage point of imperial and postcolonial studies, Todd Kuchta argues that suburban identity is tied to the empire's rise and fall. Like the semi-detached house, which joins separate dwellings under one roof, suburbia and empire were geographically distinct but imaginatively linked. Yet just as the "semi" conceals two homes behind a single façade, suburbia's apparent uniformity masks its defining oppositions--between country and city, "civilization" and "savagery," master and slave.

Book A Long Short Life

Download or read book A Long Short Life written by Merle W. McMorrow and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2010-12 with total page 459 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In A Long Short Life, Merle W. McMorrow documents a trail of events of his own and his family's experiences from his youth into adulthood. He was born during a time of uncertainty following World War I. Both his father and mother grew up in families that put very little value on education, and therefore neither one finished high school. Their marriage resulted in family difficulties due to religious differences, among other factors. Tragedy struck the family many times, but the event that left a permanent mark on McMorrow and his family was the divorce of his parents. These problems were followed by the deaths of some of other family members, as well as a diagnosis of diabetes for his father. This period of difficulties would ultimately extend through three major historical time periods: the Great Depression, World War II and the Cold War. Despite the many problems his family endured, however, they enjoyed twenty years as a close-knit family, all lovingly chronicled in A Long Short Life.
