Book Collieries of South Wales

Download or read book Collieries of South Wales written by John Cornwell and published by Virago Press. This book was released on 2001-01-01 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Following on from the success of Volume 1, this book will consist of more Colliery photographs, with perhaps as many as 200 scenes portrayed from about 30 collieries not featured in Volume 1. The book will portray by gone collieries with more photographs on the surface and underground of an industry now virtually non-existent and just a memory. As with volume 1, the photographs are of high quality. The author has spent years photographing these mines and his techniques involved 'painting with light', rather than by using a flash gun. The effect is to create incredibly evocative photographs.

Book The Shadow of the Mine

Download or read book The Shadow of the Mine written by Huw Beynon and published by Verso Books. This book was released on 2024-03-19 with total page 433 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: No one personified the age of industry more than the miners. The Shadow of the Mine tells the story of King Coal in its heyday – and what happened to mining communities after the last pits closed. The Shadow of the Mine tells the story of King Coal in its heyday, the heroics and betrayals of the Miners’ Strike, and what happened to mining communities after the last pits closed. No one personified the age of industry more than the miners. Coal was central to the British economy, powering its factories and railways. It carried political weight, too. In the eighties the miners risked everything in a year-long strike against Thatcher’s shutdowns. Their defeat doomed a way of life. The lingering sense of abandonment in former mining communities would be difficult to overstate. Yet recent electoral politics has revolved around the coalfield constituencies in Labour’s Red Wall. Huw Beynon and Ray Hudson draw on decades of research to chronicle these momentous changes through the words of the people who lived through them. This edition includes a new postscript on why Thatcher’s war on the miners wasn’t good for green politics. ‘Excellent’ NEW STATESMAN ‘Brilliant’ TIMES LITERARY SUPPLEMENT ‘Enlightening’ GUARDIAN

Book After Coal

Download or read book After Coal written by Tom Hansell and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What happens when fossil fuels run out? How do communities and cultures survive? Central Appalachia and south Wales were built to extract coal, and faced with coal's decline, both regions have experienced economic depression, labor unrest, and out-migration. After Coal focuses on coalfield residents who chose not to leave, but instead remained in their communities and worked to build a diverse and sustainable economy. It tells the story of four decades of exchange between two mining communities on opposite sides of the Atlantic, and profiles individuals and organizations that are undertaking the critical work of regeneration. The stories in this book are told through interviews and photographs collected during the making of After Coal, a documentary film produced by the Center for Appalachian Studies at Appalachian State University and directed by Tom Hansell. Considering resonances between Appalachia and Wales in the realms of labor, environment, and movements for social justice, the book approaches the transition from coal as an opportunity for marginalized people around the world to work toward safer and more egalitarian futures.

Book South Wales Miners Glowyr de Cymru

Download or read book South Wales Miners Glowyr de Cymru written by Robert Page Arnot and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-08-18 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1967, South Wales Miners: Glowyr de Cymru is a vivid portrayal of contending personalities in the generation before the first world war, often set forth in their own words. Outstanding amongst them are the founder of the Labour Party., Keir Hardie and the young Liberal politician Winston Churchill whose successive ministerial duties brought him into close relation with the miners of South Wales. Out of the almost insurrectionary situation of 1910 in Glamorgan there has come a widespread belief that Churchill was responsible for the shooting down of Welsh miners and that Tonypandy in the Rhondda was once a scene of massacre. In destroying this picturesque myth, Page Arnot uncovers an array of facts that are stranger than this long-lived fiction and also richer in their interplay of personalities. Here, soberly, recorded, are the facts that could make a chronicle play with dramatis personae ranging from Monarch and Minister to mineowners and working miners who daily lives create the tensions of the time. Their national characteristics and their exceptional conditions, at home or in chapel, underground or on the surface, form one side of the picture, of which the other is furnished by the entrenched position of the associated coal owners. This book will be of interest to students of history, economics and labour studies.

Book Coal Miners

    Book Details:
  • Author : Brian Elliot
  • Publisher : Pen and Sword
  • Release : 2015-03-31
  • ISBN : 1845631471
  • Pages : 161 pages

Download or read book Coal Miners written by Brian Elliot and published by Pen and Sword. This book was released on 2015-03-31 with total page 161 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There have been many books published about the coal mining industry of Britain but relatively few about the miners themselves. This book is unique in that it concentrates on the miner, his family and his work through a careful selection of illustrations. Although most of the images are photographic, and therefore relate to the latter part of the nineteenth to the closing years of twentieth century, use is also made of much earlier sources, from woodcuts and engravings to illustrations in contemporary journals and magazines. ??A good deal of the material has come from the author's own collection, accumulated over many years of research; and also from archive sources. The selection is wide ranging, covering the traditional coal mining regions of Britain, from Scotland and northern England, through the midland coalfields and to Wales, as well as images from smaller coalfields such as Cumbria and Somerset. ??Today, coal mining is a virtually a lost industry and the men, women and children involved in what was once Britain's most important economic but most dangerous activity deserve both recognition and celebration.

Book South Wales Collieries

Download or read book South Wales Collieries written by David Owen and published by History Press Limited. This book was released on 2001 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of over 200 images provides an illustrated account of the development of the South Wales Coalfield, once one of the largest and most productive in Britain. It illustrates the area's industrial history during the past two hundred years as well as giving a glimpse of village life in the valleys of Rhondda Cynon Taff. Contained within are photographs of the miners, their housing and of the collieries that once provided employment for tens of thousands and that have now all but disappeared. For those who once worked in the coalfield the illustrations and text will conjure up memories of days gone by and for those too young to remeber the valleys as an industrial heartland of the Empire they will show just how hard life once was for their fathers and grandfathers alike. David Owen left school to train as a miner at Aberaman Colliery and worked underground at Tylorstown No. 9 until its closure on Friday 15th October 1960. He then transferred to Maerdy No. 3 & No. 4 Colliery where he worked underground for the rest of his career.
