Book Images of Blood in American Cinema

Download or read book Images of Blood in American Cinema written by Kjetil Rødje and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-03-09 with total page 213 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through studying images of blood in film from the mid-1950s to the end of the 1960s, this path-breaking book explores how blood as an (audio)visual cinematic element went from predominately operating as a signifier, providing audiences with information about a film’s plot and characters, to increasingly operating in terms of affect, potentially evoking visceral and embodied responses in viewers. Using films such as The Return of Dracula, The Tingler, Blood Feast, Two Thousand Maniacs, Color Me Blood Red, Bonnie and Clyde, and The Wild Bunch, Rødje takes a novel approach to film history by following one (audio)visual element through an exploration that traverses established standards for film production and reception. This study does not heed distinctions regarding to genres (horror, western, gangster) or models of film production (exploitation, independent, studio productions) but rather maps the operations of cinematic images across marginal as well as more traditionally esteemed cinematic territories. The result is a book that rethinks and reassembles cinematic practices as well as aesthetics, and as such invites new ways to investigate how cinematic images enter relations with other images as well as with audiences.

Book Christian Images and Their Jewish Desecrators

Download or read book Christian Images and Their Jewish Desecrators written by Katherine Aron-Beller and published by University of Pennsylvania Press. This book was released on 2024-01-09 with total page 441 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Christian Images and Their Jewish Desecrators, historian Katherine Aron-Beller analyzes the common Christian charge that Jews habitually and compulsively violated Christian images, identifying this allegation as one that functioned alongside other anti-Jewish allegations such as ritual murder, blood libel, and host desecration to ultimately inform dangerous and long-lasting prejudices in medieval and early modern Europe. Through an analysis of folk tales, myths, legal proceedings, and religious art, Aron-Beller finds that narratives alleging that Jews committed violence against images of Christ, Mary, and the disciples flourished in Europe between the fifth and seventeenth centuries. She then explores how these narratives manifested differently across the continent and the centuries, finding that their potency reflected not Jewish actions per se, but Christians’ own concerns about slipping into idolatry when viewing depictions of religious figures. In addition, Aron-Beller considers Jews’ own attitudes toward Christian imagery and the ways in which they responded to and rejected—or embraced—such allegations. By examining how desecration allegations affected Jewish individuals and communities spanning Byzantium, medieval England, France, Germany, and early modern Spain and Italy, Aron-Beller demonstrates that this charge was a powerful expression of the Christian majority’s anxiety around committing idolatry and their eagerness to participate in practices of veneration that revolved around visual images—an anxiety that evolved through the centuries and persists to this day.

Book Bleeding Out

    Book Details:
  • Author : Thomas Abt
  • Publisher : Basic Books
  • Release : 2019-06-25
  • ISBN : 1541645715
  • Pages : 285 pages

Download or read book Bleeding Out written by Thomas Abt and published by Basic Books. This book was released on 2019-06-25 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From a Harvard scholar and former Obama official, a powerful proposal for curtailing violent crime in America Urban violence is one of the most divisive and allegedly intractable issues of our time. But as Harvard scholar Thomas Abt shows in Bleeding Out, we actually possess all the tools necessary to stem violence in our cities. Coupling the latest social science with firsthand experience as a crime-fighter, Abt proposes a relentless focus on violence itself -- not drugs, gangs, or guns. Because violence is "sticky," clustering among small groups of people and places, it can be predicted and prevented using a series of smart-on-crime strategies that do not require new laws or big budgets. Bringing these strategies together, Abt offers a concrete, cost-effective plan to reduce homicides by over 50 percent in eight years, saving more than 12,000 lives nationally. Violence acts as a linchpin for urban poverty, so curbing such crime can unlock the untapped potential of our cities' most disadvantaged communities and help us to bridge the nation's larger economic and social divides. Urgent yet hopeful, Bleeding Out offers practical solutions to the national emergency of urban violence -- and challenges readers to demand action.

Book Color Medical Image Analysis

Download or read book Color Medical Image Analysis written by M. Emre Celebi and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-09-16 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the early 20th century, medical imaging has been dominated by monochrome imaging modalities such as x-ray, computed tomography, ultrasound, and magnetic resonance imaging. As a result, color information has been overlooked in medical image analysis applications. Recently, various medical imaging modalities that involve color information have been introduced. These include cervicography, dermoscopy, fundus photography, gastrointestinal endoscopy, microscopy, and wound photography. However, in comparison to monochrome images, the analysis of color images is a relatively unexplored area. The multivariate nature of color image data presents new challenges for researchers and practitioners as the numerous methods developed for monochrome images are often not directly applicable to multichannel images. The goal of this volume is to summarize the state-of-the-art in the utilization of color information in medical image analysis.

Book The Civil Contract of Photography

Download or read book The Civil Contract of Photography written by Ariella Azoulay and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2021-09-14 with total page 586 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this groundbreaking work, Ariella Azoulay thoroughly revises our understanding of the ethical status of photography. It must, she insists, be understood in its inseparability from the many catastrophes of recent history. She argues that photography is a particular set of relations between individuals and the powers that govern them and, at the same time, a form of relations among equals that constrains that power. Anyone, even a stateless person, who addresses others through photographs or occupies the position of a photograph’s addressee, is or can become a member of the citizenry of photography. The crucial arguments of the book concern two groups that have been rendered invisible by their state of exception: the Palestinian noncitizens of Israel and women in Western societies. Azoulay’s leading question is: Under what legal, political, or cultural conditions does it become possible to see and show disaster that befalls those with flawed citizenship in a state of exception? The Civil Contract of Photography is an essential work for anyone seeking to understand the disasters of recent history and the consequences of how they and their victims are represented.

Book Radiological Imaging of the Small Intestine

Download or read book Radiological Imaging of the Small Intestine written by N.C. Gourtsoyiannis and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 479 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Whereas during the past decade endoscopy has become established as the leading means of diagnosis and management of diseases affecting the esophagus, starnach and large bowel, radiology has retained its pre-eminence for the clinical study and evaluation of the small bowel. This book provides unique coverage of all current radiological techniques used to study the small bowel, including not only barium studies and angiography but also cross-sectional methods such as uhrasound and computer tomography as well as nuclear medicine. Ernerging techniques such as magnetic resonance imaging are given close consideration, and interventional procedures are dealt with fully. Following an introduction on anatomy, physiology, and pathology pertinent to radiol ogy, the book describes in great detail common and less common congenital and development anomalies, trauma, infectious and infl.ammatory conditions, and tumors. The radiological accounts are illustrated by unique color photographs of pathological specimens. It is important for all professionals involved in the management of patients with small-bowel disease tobe critically informed about the specific advantages as well as the limitations of the various modern imaging techniques now employed for the in vivo morphological evaluation of the small bowel. This comprehensive book provides a timely update of our knowledge in this field and is a welcome addition to our series "Medical Radiology;' which aims to provide exhaustive coverage of modern diagnostic radiology. It will be of great interest for general and abdominal radiologists, gastroen terologists, and abdominal surgeons.

Book excerpt: NATIONAL BESTSELLER · OPTIONED FOR NETFLIX BY A PRODUCER OF THE BATMAN GOODREADS CHOICE AWARD WINNER “I loved it." —Stephen King From Edgar Award-finalist Jason Rekulak comes a wildly inventive spin on the supernatural thriller, for fans of Stranger Things and Riley Sager, about a woman working as a nanny for a young boy with strange and disturbing secrets. Mallory Quinn is fresh out of rehab when she takes a job as a babysitter for Ted and Caroline Maxwell. She is to look after their five-year-old son, Teddy. Mallory immediately loves it. She has her own living space, goes out for nightly runs, and has the stability she craves. And she sincerely bonds with Teddy, a sweet, shy boy who is never without his sketchbook and pencil. His drawings are the usual fare: trees, rabbits, balloons. But one day, he draws something different: a man in a forest, dragging a woman’s lifeless body. Then, Teddy’s artwork becomes increasingly sinister, and his stick figures quickly evolve into lifelike sketches well beyond the ability of any five-year-old. Mallory begins to wonder if these are glimpses of a long-unsolved murder, perhaps relayed by a supernatural force. Knowing just how crazy it all sounds, Mallory nevertheless sets out to decipher the images and save Teddy before it’s too late.

Book Multi Sensor Imaging and Fusion Methods Evaluations and Applications volume II

Download or read book Multi Sensor Imaging and Fusion Methods Evaluations and Applications volume II written by Zhiqin Zhu and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2024-07-24 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Multi-sensor image fusion focuses on processing images of the same object or scene acquired by multiple sensors, in which various sensors with multi-level and multi-spatial information are complemented and combined to ultimately yield a consistent interpretation of the observed environment. In recent years, multi-sensor image fusion has become a highly active topic, and various fusion methods have been proposed. Many effective processing methods, including multi-scale transformation, fuzzy inference, and deep learning, have been introduced to design fusion algorithms. Despite the great progress, there are still some noteworthy challenges in the field, such as the lack of unified fusion theories and methods for effective generalized fusion, the lack of fault tolerance and robustness, the lack of benchmarks for performance evaluation, the lack of work on specific applications of multi-sensor image fusion, and so on.
