Book Images of a Lengthy War

Download or read book Images of a Lengthy War written by Joel D. Meyerson and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Images of a Lengthy War makes available for study and reference some of the important photographs of the Vietnam War, accompanied by brief narrative. The volume covers the three decades of the Army2s experience in Vietnam, from the early years of advice and support to the French government through active intervention with combat forces and gradual withdrawal. Many of the photographs were selected to show the complex nature of the war, in particular demands of conducting counterguerrilla operations while undertaking conventional campaigns against enemy regulars. While the focus of the work is the American military, policy decisions in Washington and political developments in Vietnam are also amply illustrated to place the war in context. As a unique form of evidence, the photographs are a valuable resource in recalling the look of Vietnam.

Download or read book The Crimean War written by John Grehan and published by Images of War. This book was released on 2014 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Crimean War was a conflict between the Russian Empire and an alliance of the French Empire, British Empire, Ottoman Empire and the Kingdom of Sardinia. The war was part of a long-running contest between the major European powers for influence over territories of the declining Ottoman Empire. Most of the conflict took place on the Crimean Peninsula, but there were smaller campaigns in western Anatolia, the Caucasus, the Baltic Sea, the Pacific Ocean and the White Sea. The Crimean War is known for the logistical and tactical errors during the land campaign on both sides (the naval side saw a successful Allied campaign which eliminated most of the ships of the Russian Navy in the Black Sea). Nonetheless, it is sometimes considered to be one of the first "modern" wars as it introduced technical changes which affected the future course of warfare, including the first tactical use of railways and the electric telegraph. It is also famous for the work of Florence Nightingale and Mary Seacole, who pioneered modern nursing practices while caring for wounded British soldiers. The war also led to the establishment of the Victoria Cross in 1856 (backdated to 1854), the British Army's first universal award for valor. The Crimean War was one of the first wars to be documented extensively in photographs. News correspondence reaching Britain from the Crimea was the first time the public were kept informed of the day-to-day realities of war. This unique collection of 150-160 images will prove to be an invaluable resource for historians, students and all those interested in what was one of the most significant periods in British military history. Each picture will tell its own story, and will be fully captioned with historical detail.

Book Armoured Warfare in the Vietnam War

Download or read book Armoured Warfare in the Vietnam War written by Michael Green and published by Pen and Sword. This book was released on 2014-10-30 with total page 317 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This pictorial history of the Indochina and Vietnam Wars captures the range of armored warfare used in the region through rare wartime photographs. The two conflicts that engulfed Indochina and Vietnam in the decades after World War II are generally thought of as infantry wars. But in fact, they both involved a significant amount of armored warfare. In this fully illustrated volume, military expert and Vietnam veteran Michael Green describes the many kinds of armored vehicles deployed and their contributions in combat. The ill-fated French Expeditionary Force of the Indochina War was largely equipped with World War II era American tanks—including M3 and M5 Stuart, M4 Sherman and M24 light tanks—as well as armored cars and half-tracks. Most of these eventually went to the Army of the Republic of Vietnam, but were outdated and ineffective due to lack of logistics and training. The US Army and Marine Corps build-up in the 1960s saw vast quantities of M48 Pattons, M113 APCs and many specialist variants and improvised armored vehicles arrive in the theatre. The Australians also brought their British Centurion tanks. But it was the Russians, Chinese and North Vietnamese who won the day and their T-38-85 tanks, ZSU anti-aircraft platforms.

Book Great Photographs of the Civil War

The images--selected by Time Life editors from thousands of photographs preserved in museums and collections around the country--tell the epic story of a nation divided. Reflected here are the tireless efforts of pioneering photographers who used heavy equipment and portable darkrooms mounted on wagon beds to record this fateful struggle. The editors have assembled 300 gripping images, some of them recognized classics and others rarely seen, into 20 chronological photo essays. Here, the crucial events of the war, from the bloodiest day at Antietam and the Confederate high tide at Gettysburg to the battles for Atlanta and the climactic siege of Petersburg, are conveyed with power and precision in the defining photographs of the conflict that redefined our nation.

Book The Soviet Afghan War

  • Author : Anthony Tucker-Jones
  • Publisher : Casemate Publishers
  • Release : 2014-01-19
  • ISBN : 1783830468
  • Pages : 255 pages

Download or read book The Soviet Afghan War written by Anthony Tucker-Jones and published by Casemate Publishers. This book was released on 2014-01-19 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This photographic history of the Soviet-Afghan War of 1979 to 1989 gives a fascinating insight into a grim conflict that prefigured the American-led campaign in that country. In an unequal struggle, the mujahedeen resisted for ten years, then triumphed over Moscow. For the Soviet Union, the futile intervention has been compared to the similar humiliation suffered by the United States in Vietnam. For the Afghans the victory was just one episode in the long history of their efforts to free their territory from the interference of foreign powers. By focusing on the Soviet use of heavy weaponry, Anthony Tucker-Jones shows the imbalance at the heart of a conflict in which the mechanized, industrial might of a super power was set against lightly armed partisans who became experts in infiltration tactics and ambushes. His work is a visual record of the tactics and the equipment the Soviets used to counter the resistance and protect vulnerable convoys. It also shows what this grueling conflict was like for the Soviet soldiers, the guerrilla fighters and the Afghan population, and it puts the present war in Afghanistan in a thought-provoking historical perspective.
