Book excerpt: Craig Potton rose to prominence as a photographer in the late 1980s, with a distinct and original view of the landscape of Aotearoa/New Zealand. He was a photographer with little interest in a sentimentalised or romantic view of the land, but rather pursued a less compromising and more muscular vision that sought to convey this country's remarkable landscape in a real light. In the decades since Craig Potton has become one of New Zealand's most distinguished landscape photographers, famous for his moody, often dramatic images that signal a deeply-felt connection with the wild parts of New Zealand. This book collects together many of his most celebrated images in one place, a body of work that clearly shows why his reputation is so strong. The images range from his celebrated aerial photography, especially that of the Southern Alps and Fiordland, and of the volcanoes of the Central North Island, his beautifully composed and complex forest interiors, his gentle seascapes, and also those from the rural parts of New Zealand. Beautifully produced and packaged in large format, this will be a book of New Zealand landscape photography not to be missed.

Book New Zealand

Download or read book New Zealand written by Robbie Burton and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 151 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New Zealand: Eye on the Landscape is a new book of high-quality landscape photography aimed at the top end of the New Zealand pictorial book market. The distinguishing feature of this book is that the images used will not be the work of one photographer, but rather a collection of the best images from a wide range of landscape photographers. The inspiration for this concept has been the extraordinary work that is exhibited by members of the Photographic Society of New Zealand, the umbrella organisation for a wide range of photographic groups. The majority of photographs created by their members, who range from professional, semi-professional to keen amateur, is hardly seen and never published. The best of it, however, is of the highest quality and often provides a fresh and original view of a much-photographed country. The book will follow a standard format, with a focus on all of the main areas visited by tourists. The selection will be undertaken by publisher Robbie Burton and photographer Craig Potton, one of the most experienced photoediting partnerships in the New Zealand publishing industry. New Zealand: Eye on the Landscape will be a fresh and original pictorial book, with the highest standard of photography and production.

Book Lost in New Zealand

Download or read book Lost in New Zealand written by Caroline Budge and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lost in New Zealand is a new release from pre-eminent New Zealand photographer Craig Potton, in the popular New Zealand pictorial genre. In a deliberate move away from the highly commercial photography of the likes of New Zealand Aotearoa, Craig is presenting images from his photo library with a more subtle and sophisticated take on the landscape. Influenced by recent photography trips to Iceland and Nepal, and the success of his newly-opened Arrowtown gallery, Craig is keen to make available his less-known but more personal photography, meeting the expectations of tourists and locals alike whose tastes in landscape photography are wider than a book of solely postcard-style pictures. Art and literature is full of metaphors of those who become either emotionally, physically, or spiritually 'lost' in the wilderness. Through this journey, they are able to find a sense of calm within themselves, and learn to appreciate the sublime in nature. Similarly, Lost in New Zealand tries to capture the quiet beauty of this land, and one photographer's passion for it.Not since Moment & Memory has Craig allowed such a private and personal retrospective of his work to be published, and Lost in New Zealand includes many previously unpublished photographs from the past 10 years.

Download or read book Vanishing Points written by Martin Sercombe and published by . This book was released on 2015-11-09 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Vanishing Points reflects a personal, idiosyncratic approach to New Zealand landscape photography. Each image is a response to to a particular moment, a fleeting mood, a momentary conjugation of light, space and form, meeting in the eye of the camera. Each moment tells its own story, a story as tentative and ambiguous as the process of capturing it. A fellow photographer suggested that this approach resounds with that of Henri Cartier-Bresson, who once said "Photographers deal in things which are continually vanishing and when they have vanished there is no contrivance on earth which can make them come back again." His quote inspired the title of this volume, which unfolds in three chapters.Oceanscapes is a collection of images taken mainly in the Waitakere Ranges Regional Park, following a path along the southern coastline of the Manukau Harbour, then along the west coast from Whatipu to Muruwai. The Dreamscapes were inspired by many of the same locations, but inhabit a more subjective, abstracted space, transformed by time exposures, superimposition and the alchemical properties of light.Mountainscapes draws together images from a number of locations on the North and South Islands, including the Tongariro, Arthur's Pass and Fiordland National Parks.

Download or read book Visions of Nature written by Dr. Jarrod Hore and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2022-04-19 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Visions of Nature revives the work of late nineteenth-century landscape photographers who shaped the environmental attitudes of settlers in the colonies of the Tasman World and in California. Despite having little association with one another, these photographers developed remarkably similar visions of nature. They rode a wave of interest in wilderness imagery and made pictures that were hung in settler drawing rooms, perused in albums, projected in theaters, and re-created on vacations. In both the American West and the Tasman World, landscape photography fed into settler belonging and produced new ways of thinking about territory and history. During this key period of settler revolution, a generation of photographers came to associate “nature” with remoteness, antiquity, and emptiness, a perspective that disguised the realities of Indigenous presence and reinforced colonial fantasies of environmental abundance. This book lifts the work of these photographers out of their provincial contexts and repositions it within a new comparative frame.
