Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is Motion Estimation In computer vision and image processing, motion estimation is the process of determining motion vectors that describe the transformation from one 2D image to another; usually from adjacent frames in a video sequence. It is an ill-posed problem as the motion happens in three dimensions (3D) but the images are a projection of the 3D scene onto a 2D plane. The motion vectors may relate to the whole image or specific parts, such as rectangular blocks, arbitrary shaped patches or even per pixel. The motion vectors may be represented by a translational model or many other models that can approximate the motion of a real video camera, such as rotation and translation in all three dimensions and zoom. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The processing of image sequences has a broad spectrum of important applica tions including target tracking, robot navigation, bandwidth compression of TV conferencing video signals, studying the motion of biological cells using microcinematography, cloud tracking, and highway traffic monitoring. Image sequence processing involves a large amount of data. However, because of the progress in computer, LSI, and VLSI technologies, we have now reached a stage when many useful processing tasks can be done in a reasonable amount of time. As a result, research and development activities in image sequence analysis have recently been growing at a rapid pace. An IEEE Computer Society Workshop on Computer Analysis of Time-Varying Imagery was held in Philadelphia, April 5-6, 1979. A related special issue of the IEEE Transactions on Pattern Anal ysis and Machine Intelligence was published in November 1980. The IEEE Com puter magazine has also published a special issue on the subject in 1981. The purpose of this book is to survey the field of image sequence analysis and to discuss in depth a number of important selected topics. The seven chap ters fall into two categories. Chapters 2, 3, and 7 are comprehensive surveys on, respectively, the whole field of image sequence analysis, efficient coding of image sequences, and the processing of medical image sequences. In Chapters 1, 4, 5, and 6 the authors present mainly results of their own research on, respectively, motion estimation, noise reduction in image sequences, moving object extraction, and occlusion.

Book H 264 Motion Estimation and Motion Compensation

Download or read book H 264 Motion Estimation and Motion Compensation written by Darshankumar Shah and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As technology advances, multimedia applications increase exponentially in day-to-day life. Multimedia applications such as video telephony, video conferencing, TV, streaming video/audio online, and many other applications are in demand in video industry. These applications usually require high bandwidth, large storage, and high latency time to send on network. To conserve resources, it is required to compress the video data before sending them to the network by sender side. It is also required to decompress the video data at receiver end before broadcasting. Many different video codec standards such as H.261, MPEG-1, MPEG-2, H.263, and H.264 are implemented. H.264 is latest international video codec standard. This protocol was developed jointly by International Telecommunication Union - Telecommunication Standardization Sector (ITU-T) and International Organization for Standardization (ISO). The objective of this project is to explore different blocks of H.264 in MATLAB environment. This project first briefly describes about encoding and decoding process, and then it discusses more details about different modules of encoder and decoder, and the related algorithms. Finally, it compares the result of different algorithms based on compression ratio, peak signal to noise ratio, time required for encoding process, and storage. A video file is given as input to encoder, the video file is converted to a number of frames using video codec, and fixed size macro block is defined in each frame for encoding process. Motion search algorithm finds motion vector after macro block definition, then compensated image is generated based on reference frame and motion vector by video codec. Redundancy is removed from current frame by subtracting compensated image. Compression of residual information is performed using transformation, quantization, and entropy coder. Compressed data are given as inputs to decoder, and decoder process the image to reconstruct image. To enhance image quality and reduce blocking artifact, the image frame is passed through filter. The project is completed successfully by reconstructing video with reasonable quality.

Book Motion Analysis for Image Sequence Coding

Download or read book Motion Analysis for Image Sequence Coding written by G. Tziritas and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is the fourth in the book series, Advances in Image Communication, a series dedicated to exploring the rapidly evolving, multidisciplinary field of image communications. Each publication stands alone as a state-of-the-art reference work in its particular area of expertise. It also forms an integral part of the comprehensive overview of developments across the field, which the series offers as a whole. Motion Analysis for Image Sequence Coding documents the technical advances made through the years in dealing with motion in image sequences - from straightforward coarse approaches to complicated algorithms. It is timely because of the unprecedented effort which is made to establish a set of international standards for the digital compression of moving pictures and television signals. These standards rely heavily on motion estimation and compensation techniques and will be exploited on a large scale in multimedia applications as well as in intelligent systems. The book will be of prime importance, not only to active engineers and researchers in the field, but also by serving as a basic educational tool.

Book Image Sequence Processing and Dynamic Scene Analysis

Download or read book Image Sequence Processing and Dynamic Scene Analysis written by T. S. Huang and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 759 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains the proceedings of the NATO Advanced Study Institute on "Image Sequence Processing and Dynamic Scene Analysis" held 21 June - 2 July, 1982 in Hotel Maritim, Braunlage/Harz, Federal Republic of Germany. The organizing eommittee of the institute consists of T.S. Huang (Director), H.G. Musmann (Co Director), H.H. Nagel (Consultant), and C.E. Liedtke and W. Geuen (Local 'arrangement). This Institute was devoted to the rapidly emerging field of image sequence processing and dynamic scene analysis which has man! important applications in cluding target tracking, television bandwidth compression, highway traffic moni toring, and analysis of heart wall motion for medical diagnosis. The lectures and discussions in this Institute fell into three overlapping categories: Motion estimation; pattern recognition and artificial intelligence techniques in dynamic scene analysis; and, applications. 1) Motion estimation - One of the most important problems in image sequence analysis and dynamic scene analysis is displacement and motion estimation. For example, in interframe coding using temporal DPCM, displacement estimation and compensation can improve efficiency significantly. Also, estimated motion parameters can be powerful cues in target segmentation, detection, and classification. In this Institute, a number of recently developed techniques for displacement and motion estimation were discussed.

Book Motion Compensation from Limited Data for Reference constrained Image Reconstruction

Download or read book Motion Compensation from Limited Data for Reference constrained Image Reconstruction written by Fan Lam and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When reconstructing images from limited (or sparsely sampled) data, reference (or template) images are useful for constraining image reconstruction for various applications. However, in order to be an effective constraint, the reference should be correctly aligned with the target image one wants to reconstruct. Conventional image registration methods assume that both the reference and target images are completely specified, but one usually has only limited data from the target. Therefore, these methods do not apply. This thesis addresses this new problem of registering a known high-resolution reference image to an unknown target image for which one has only limited measurements. We solve this problem by introducing an intermediate image model that expresses the target image as a combination of a generalized series model and a residual component. This model allows the reference and target images to have different contrast and can be used with various motion models. It also makes use of all the available data to estimate the motion parameters. We propose practical algorithms to solve the optimization problems associated with motion parameter estimation. We also analyze the characteristics and performance of the proposed method by an estimation-theoretic approach and by computer simulations. We demonstrate accurate motion parameter estimation for an affine transformation model and a nonrigid deformable model.

Book Super Resolution of Images and Video

Download or read book Super Resolution of Images and Video written by Aggelos K. Katsaggelos and published by Morgan & Claypool Publishers. This book was released on 2007-06-01 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on the super resolution of images and video. The authors’ use of the term super resolution (SR) is used to describe the process of obtaining a high resolution (HR) image, or a sequence of HR images, from a set of low resolution (LR) observations. This process has also been referred to in the literature as resolution enhancement (RE). SR has been applied primarily to spatial and temporal RE, but also to hyperspectral image enhancement. This book concentrates on motion based spatial RE, although the authors also describe motion free and hyperspectral image SR problems. Also examined is the very recent research area of SR for compression, which consists of the intentional downsampling, during pre-processing, of a video sequence to be compressed and the application of SR techniques, during post-processing, on the compressed sequence. It is clear that there is a strong interplay between the tools and techniques developed for SR and a number of other inverse problems encountered in signal processing (e.g., image restoration, motion estimation). SR techniques are being applied to a variety of fields, such as obtaining improved still images from video sequences (video printing), high definition television, high performance color Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) screens, improvement of the quality of color images taken by one CCD, video surveillance, remote sensing, and medical imaging. The authors believe that the SR/RE area has matured enough to develop a body of knowledge that can now start to provide useful and practical solutions to challenging real problems and that SR techniques can be an integral part of an image and video codec and can drive the development of new coder-decoders (codecs) and standards.
