Book Comparison of Lossless Image Compression Techniques based on Context Modeling

Download or read book Comparison of Lossless Image Compression Techniques based on Context Modeling written by Mohammad El-Ghoboushi and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2015-03-31 with total page 85 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Master's Thesis from the year 2014 in the subject Computer Science - Software, , course: Image Processing, language: English, abstract: In this thesis various methods for lossless compression of source image data are analyzed and discussed. The main focus in this work is lossless compression algorithms based on context modeling using tree structure. We are going to compare CALIC, GCT-I algorithms to the JPEG2000 standard algorithm which will be considered the reference of comparison. This work includes research on how to modify CALIC algorithm in continuous-tone mode by truncating tails of the error histogram which may lead to improve CALIC compression performance. Also, we are going to propose a modification to CALIC in binary mode by eliminating error feedback mechanism. As when any pixel to be encoded has a different grey level than any of the neighboring pixels, CALIC triggers an escape sequence that switches the algorithm from binary mode to continuous-tone mode. Which means in this case the pixel will be treated as if it was in continuous-tone region. This minor modification should improve CALIC performance in binary images. Finally, we are going to discuss the GCT-I on medical images and compare results to the JPEG2000 standard.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the last decade, image and signal compression for storage and transmission purpose has seen a great expansion. But what about medical data compression? Should a medical image or a physiological signal be processed and compressed like any other data? The progress made in imaging systems, storing systems and telemedicine makes compression in this field particularly interesting. However, this compression has to be adapted to the specificities of biomedical data which contain diagnosis information. As such, this book offers an overview of compression techniques applied to medical data, including: physiological signals, MRI, X-ray, ultrasound images, static and dynamic volumetric images. Researchers, clinicians, engineers and professionals in this area, along with postgraduate students in the signal and image processing field, will find this book to be of great interest.

Book Digital Image Compression Techniques

Download or read book Digital Image Compression Techniques written by Majid Rabbani and published by SPIE Press. This book was released on 1991 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In order to utilize digital images effectively, specific techniques are needed to reduce the number of bits required for their representation. This Tutorial Text provides the groundwork for understanding these image compression tecniques and presents a number of different schemes that have proven useful. The algorithms discussed in this book are concerned mainly with the compression of still-frame, continuous-tone, monochrome and color images, but some of the techniques, such as arithmetic coding, have found widespread use in the compression of bilevel images. Both lossless (bit-preserving) and lossy techniques are considered. A detailed description of the compression algorithm proposed as the world standard (the JPEG baseline algorithm) is provided. The book contains approximately 30 pages of reconstructed and error images illustrating the effect of each compression technique on a consistent image set, thus allowing for a direct comparison of bit rates and reconstucted image quality. For each algorithm, issues such as quality vs. bit rate, implementation complexity, and susceptibility to channel errors are considered.

Book Still Image Compression on Parallel Computer Architectures

Download or read book Still Image Compression on Parallel Computer Architectures written by Savitri Bevinakoppa and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Still Image Compression on Parallel Computer Architectures investigates the application of parallel-processing techniques to digital image compression. Digital image compression is used to reduce the number of bits required to store an image in computer memory and/or transmit it over a communication link. Over the past decade advancements in technology have spawned many applications of digital imaging, such as photo videotex, desktop publishing, graphics arts, color facsimile, newspaper wire phototransmission and medical imaging. For many other contemporary applications, such as distributed multimedia systems, rapid transmission of images is necessary. Dollar cost as well as time cost of transmission and storage tend to be directly proportional to the volume of data. Therefore, application of digital image compression techniques becomes necessary to minimize costs. A number of digital image compression algorithms have been developed and standardized. With the success of these algorithms, research effort is now directed towards improving implementation techniques. The Joint Photographic Experts Group (JPEG) and Motion Photographic Experts Group(MPEG) are international organizations which have developed digital image compression standards. Hardware (VLSI chips) which implement the JPEG image compression algorithm are available. Such hardware is specific to image compression only and cannot be used for other image processing applications. A flexible means of implementing digital image compression algorithms is still required. An obvious method of processing different imaging applications on general purpose hardware platforms is to develop software implementations. JPEG uses an 8 × 8 block of image samples as the basic element for compression. These blocks are processed sequentially. There is always the possibility of having similar blocks in a given image. If similar blocks in an image are located, then repeated compression of these blocks is not necessary. By locating similar blocks in the image, the speed of compression can be increased and the size of the compressed image can be reduced. Based on this concept an enhancement to the JPEG algorithm is proposed, called Bock Comparator Technique (BCT). Still Image Compression on Parallel Computer Architectures is designed for advanced students and practitioners of computer science. This comprehensive reference provides a foundation for understanding digital image compression techniques and parallel computer architectures.

Book Adapting Image and Video Compression Techniques to Power System Phasor Measurement Data

Download or read book Adapting Image and Video Compression Techniques to Power System Phasor Measurement Data written by Sowmya Acharya and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Power systems across the world are deploying larger numbers of phasor measurement units (PMUs) in both transmission and distribution networks. Data from PMUs are being used for wide-area measurement and control, state estimation, improved security and reliability of the network, and other applications related to power system protection and automation. As PMUs generate large amounts of data in short time intervals, transmitting and archiving the data for future becomes challenging. An attractive solution to this problem is to compress the raw data using efficient compression algorithms. Various lossless and lossy compression algorithms have been proposed in literature for compressing PMU data. Most of these methods treat the input data as generic datasets and apply variants of existing file compression algorithms. This report investigates the possibility of utilizing knowledge of characteristics of the power system to improve the compression. Image compression algorithms like JPEG achieve compression by exploiting features specific to images such as similarity of nearby pixels, smooth variation of intensity across the image, etc. Various steps involved in the compression like the YCbCr transformation, quantization, and encoding are designed by considering these features and the way we perceive images. Similarly, video can be compressed by treating the data as a stream of images and exploiting similarity of frames across time. In many ways, arrays of chronological measurements of power system quantities are analogous to an image or a stream of images. Specifically, the spatial and temporal correlations inherent in these measurements make the data amenable to compression using algorithms inspired from image and video compression. This report outlines PMU compression algorithms based on JPEG and MPEG-like compression. The suitability of other image compression algorithms is also explored. Two orthogonal transformations - covariance-based and power flow Jacobian-based - are proposed which help to take advantage of the spatial and temporal correlations. A delta-encoding scheme combined with quantization techniques is developed for handling compression of streaming PMU data. The effectiveness of the compression algorithms may be judged by the space savings, and in the case of lossy algorithms, accuracy of data reconstruction. Appropriate performance metrics are explored here with the goal of quantifying performance in ways that capture the engineering requirements in power systems. The proposed algorithms are applied in numerical case studies for compressing data from standard test systems. The algorithms can be applied to data pertaining to both steady-state and dynamic operation of the power system, though as will be illustrated, these different operating regimes give rise to different time scales and compression characteristics. Similarly, the algorithms perform well for different types of measurements, duration of data streams, and sampling frequencies. While federal regulations surrounding Critical Energy Infrastructure Information (CEII) limit researchers' access to real-world US power grid data, or impose onerous non-disclosure requirements when such data is shared with universities, a limited set of anonymized real-world data has been obtained for testing here. The algorithms have been tested on this real PMU data as collected by a utility. Preliminary examinations have been made on the effect of artefacts such as noise, missing and erroneous data on the compression ratios and accuracy of reconstruction.

Book Image and Text Compression

Download or read book Image and Text Compression written by James A. Storer and published by Springer. This book was released on 1992-06-30 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: James A. Storer Computer Science Dept. Brandeis University Waltham, MA 02254 Data compression is the process of encoding a body of data to reduce stor age requirements. With Lossless compression, data can be decompressed to be identical to the original, whereas with lossy compression, decompressed data may be an acceptable approximation (according to some fidelity criterion) to the original. For example, with digitized video, it may only be necessary that the decompressed video look as good as the original to the human eye. The two primary functions of data compression are: Storage: The capacity of a storage device can be effectively increased with data compression software or hardware that compresses a body of data on its way to the storage device and decompress it when it is retrieved. Communications: The bandwidth of a digital communication link can be effectively increased by compressing data at the sending end and decom pressing data at the receiving end. Here it can be crucial that compression and decompression can be performed in real time.
