Book Digital Image Compression Techniques

Download or read book Digital Image Compression Techniques written by Majid Rabbani and published by SPIE Press. This book was released on 1991 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In order to utilize digital images effectively, specific techniques are needed to reduce the number of bits required for their representation. This Tutorial Text provides the groundwork for understanding these image compression tecniques and presents a number of different schemes that have proven useful. The algorithms discussed in this book are concerned mainly with the compression of still-frame, continuous-tone, monochrome and color images, but some of the techniques, such as arithmetic coding, have found widespread use in the compression of bilevel images. Both lossless (bit-preserving) and lossy techniques are considered. A detailed description of the compression algorithm proposed as the world standard (the JPEG baseline algorithm) is provided. The book contains approximately 30 pages of reconstructed and error images illustrating the effect of each compression technique on a consistent image set, thus allowing for a direct comparison of bit rates and reconstucted image quality. For each algorithm, issues such as quality vs. bit rate, implementation complexity, and susceptibility to channel errors are considered.

Book Recursive Block Coding for Image Data Compression

Download or read book Recursive Block Coding for Image Data Compression written by Paul M. Farrelle and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recursive Block Coding, a new image data compression technique that has its roots in noncausal models for 1d and 2d signals, is the subject of this book. The underlying theory provides a multitude of compression algorithms that encompass two course coding, quad tree coding, hybrid coding and so on. Since the noncausal models provide a fundamentally different image representation, they lead to new approaches to many existing algorithms, including useful approaches for asymmetric, progressive, and adaptive coding techniques. On the theoretical front, the basic result shows that a random field (an ensemble of images) can be coded block by block such that the interblock redundancy can be completely removed while the individual blocks are transform coded. On the practical side, the artifact of tiling, a block boundary effect, present in conventional block by block transform coding techniques has been greatly suppressed. This book contains not only a theoretical discussion of the algorithms but also exhaustive simulation and suggested methodologies for ensemble design techniques. Each of the resulting algorithms has been applied to twelve images over a wide range of image data rates and the results are reported using subjective descriptions, photographs, mathematical MSE values, and h-plots, a recently proposed graphical representation showing a high level of agreement with image quality as judged subjectively.

Book Wavelet Image Compression

Download or read book Wavelet Image Compression written by William Pearlman and published by Morgan & Claypool Publishers. This book was released on 2013-01-01 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explains the stages necessary to create a wavelet compression system for images and describes state-of-the-art systems used in image compression standards and current research. It starts with a high level discussion of the properties of the wavelet transform, especially the decomposition into multi-resolution subbands. It continues with an exposition of the null-zone, uniform quantization used in most subband coding systems and the optimal allocation of bitrate to the different subbands. Then the image compression systems of the FBI Fingerprint Compression Standard and the JPEG2000 Standard are described in detail. Following that, the set partitioning coders SPECK and SPIHT, and EZW are explained in detail and compared via a fictitious wavelet transform in actions and number of bits coded in a single pass in the top bit plane. The presentation teaches that, besides producing efficient compression, these coding systems, except for the FBI Standard, are capable of writing bit streams that have attributes of rate scalability, resolution scalability, and random access decoding. Many diagrams and tables accompany the text to aid understanding. The book is generous in pointing out references and resources to help the reader who wishes to expand his knowledge, know the origins of the methods, or find resources for running the various algorithms or building his own coding system. Table of Contents: Introduction / Characteristics of the Wavelet Transform / Generic Wavelet-based Coding Systems / The FBI Fingerprint Image Compression Standard / Set Partition Embedded Block (SPECK) Coding / Tree-based Wavelet Transform Coding Systems / Rate Control for Embedded Block Coders / Conclusion

Book Image Compression Using ITT and ICT and a Novel Variable Quantization Technique

Download or read book Image Compression Using ITT and ICT and a Novel Variable Quantization Technique written by Soni Prattipati and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The need for novel transform coding techniques promising improved reconstruction and reduced computational complexity in the field of image and data compression is undeniable. Currently, there is a prevalent use of the integer adaptation of the popular discrete cosine transform (DCT) with fixed quantization in the video compression domain due to its ease of computation and adequate performance. However, there cannot be a single method or technique that would not only provide maximum compression possible, but also offer the best quality for different types of images. The influence of specific features of the image, such as its structure and content, on the quality of reconstructed image after decompression cannot be ignored. This thesis intends to utilize this aspect and identify areas where an alternative to integer DCT (ICT) for image compression can be proposed. There exist polynomial-based orthogonal transforms like discrete Tchebichef transform (DTT), which possess valuable properties like energy compaction, but are potentially unexploited in comparison with DCT. This thesis examines, in detail, where DTT stands as a viable alternative to DCT for lossy image compression based on various image quality parameters. It introduces a multiplier-free fast implementation of integer DTT (ITT) of size 8×8 that significantly reduces the computational complexity. Normally, images have detail spread across them in a non-homogenous manner. Hence, when the image is divided into blocks, some blocks might have intricate detail, whereas the amount of detail in some might be very sparse. This feature is exploited in this thesis by proposing a technique to adapt the quantization performed during compression according to the characteristics of the image block. The novelty of this variable quantization is that it is simple to implement without much computational or transmission overhead. The image compression performance of ITT and ICT, using both variable and fixed quantization, are evaluated and compared for a variety of images. Eventually, the cases suitable for ITT-based image compression employing variable quantization are identified.

Book Signal Recovery Techniques for Image and Video Compression and Transmission

Download or read book Signal Recovery Techniques for Image and Video Compression and Transmission written by Aggelos Katsaggelos and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Signal Recovery Techniques for Image and Video Compression and Transmission establishes a bridge between the fields of signal recovery and image and video compression. Traditionally these fields have developed separately because the problems they examined were regarded as very different, and the techniques used appear unrelated. Recently, though, there is growing consent among the research community that the two fields are quite closely related. Indeed, in both fields the objective is to reconstruct the best possible signal from limited information. The field of signal recovery, which is relatively mature, has long been associated with a wealth of powerful mathematical techniques such as Bayesian estimation and the theory of projects onto convex sets (to name just two). This book illustrates for the first time in a complete volume how these techniques can be brought to bear on the very important problems of image and video compression and transmission. Signal Recovery Techniques for Image and Video Compression and Transmission, which is written by leading practitioners in both fields, is one of the first references that addresses this approach and serves as an excellent information source for both researchers and practicing engineers.

Book Comparative Survey of the DCT and the Wavelet Transforms for Image Compression

Download or read book Comparative Survey of the DCT and the Wavelet Transforms for Image Compression written by F. Kammoun and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 11 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the framework of the image compression by transform coding, we studied two transformation techniques, respectively, used in the JPEG and JPEG2000 standards: the discrete cosine transform (DCT) and the wavelets transform (WT). We also studied the influence of different coding techniques on the compression rate.We compare the performances of different wavelets. The set of the techniques that we implemented have been applied on different types of images. We verified the compromise that exists between the compression rate and the quality of the reconstructed image. We noted that when we apply the wavelet transform, we succeeded with best results of those found by the use of the DCT.We note also that the quality of reconstruction is better as we increase the order of the filter associated to the Daubechies wavelets.
