Book excerpt: Herb Caen, a popular columnist for the San Francisco Chronicle, recently quoted a Voice of America press release as saying that it was reorganizing in order to "eliminate duplication and redundancy. " This quote both states a goal of data compression and illustrates its common need: the removal of duplication (or redundancy) can provide a more efficient representation of data and the quoted phrase is itself a candidate for such surgery. Not only can the number of words in the quote be reduced without losing informa tion, but the statement would actually be enhanced by such compression since it will no longer exemplify the wrong that the policy is supposed to correct. Here compression can streamline the phrase and minimize the em barassment while improving the English style. Compression in general is intended to provide efficient representations of data while preserving the essential information contained in the data. This book is devoted to the theory and practice of signal compression, i. e. , data compression applied to signals such as speech, audio, images, and video signals (excluding other data types such as financial data or general purpose computer data). The emphasis is on the conversion of analog waveforms into efficient digital representations and on the compression of digital information into the fewest possible bits. Both operations should yield the highest possible reconstruction fidelity subject to constraints on the bit rate and implementation complexity.

This Tutorial Text provides the groundwork for understanding these image compression tecniques and presents a number of different schemes that have proven useful. The algorithms discussed in this book are concerned mainly with the compression of still-frame, continuous-tone, monochrome and color images, but some of the techniques, such as arithmetic coding, have found widespread use in the compression of bilevel images. Both lossless (bit-preserving) and lossy techniques are considered. A detailed description of the compression algorithm proposed as the world standard (the JPEG baseline algorithm) is provided. The book contains approximately 30 pages of reconstructed and error images illustrating the effect of each compression technique on a consistent image set, thus allowing for a direct comparison of bit rates and reconstucted image quality. For each algorithm, issues such as quality vs. bit rate, implementation complexity, and susceptibility to channel errors are considered.

Book excerpt: Vector quantization (VQ) is an effective spatial domain image compression technique which maps discrete k-dimensional vectors into a digital sequence suitable for communication or storage. This research investigates methods for improving the performance of vector quantization based on pyramid tools. An iterative optimization clustering VQ procedure based upon an initial codebook randomly sampled from the training set is presented. The main idea of the proposed algorithm is that a set of new cluster means is generated by using an iterative clustering algorithm, with the previous codewords as seeds. The training set is drawn from the present training images. The resulting cluster means are then used in a new codebook which is continually refined so that each iteration reduces the distortion involved in coding a given training set. The goal of such system is to reduce the bit rate so as to minimize communication channel capacity or digital storage memory requirement. This VQ can provide a reduction from 8 bits per pixel (bpp) to 2 bpp or 0.5 bpp with negligible degradation image quality. Vector quantization usually requires extensive computations. In this thesis both the pyramid processing and the fast algorithms are examined for vector quantization. After a brief introduction of the topic in Chapter 1, the history and fundamentals of vector quantization are presented in Chapter 2. Chapter 3 describes the concepts and techniques of pyramid image processing. A new VQ algorithm which is employed in the thesis is examined in Chapter 4. In Chapter 5 the importance of post-processing is emphasized with illustrative results. Even with post-processing the vector quantization method considered indeed provides a significantly better image compression over existing image compression technique.

Book excerpt: In the current age of information technology, the issues of distributing and utilizing images efficiently and effectively are of substantial concern. Solutions to many of the problems arising from these issues are provided by techniques of image processing, among which segmentation and compression are topics of this book. Image segmentation is a process for dividing an image into its constituent parts. For block-based segmentation using statistical classification, an image is divided into blocks and a feature vector is formed for each block by grouping statistics of its pixel intensities. Conventional block-based segmentation algorithms classify each block separately, assuming independence of feature vectors. Image Segmentation and Compression Using Hidden Markov Models presents a new algorithm that models the statistical dependence among image blocks by two dimensional hidden Markov models (HMMs). Formulas for estimating the model according to the maximum likelihood criterion are derived from the EM algorithm. To segment an image, optimal classes are searched jointly for all the blocks by the maximum a posteriori (MAP) rule. The 2-D HMM is extended to multiresolution so that more context information is exploited in classification and fast progressive segmentation schemes can be formed naturally. The second issue addressed in the book is the design of joint compression and classification systems using the 2-D HMM and vector quantization. A classifier designed with the side goal of good compression often outperforms one aimed solely at classification because overfitting to training data is suppressed by vector quantization. Image Segmentation and Compression Using Hidden Markov Models is an essential reference source for researchers and engineers working in statistical signal processing or image processing, especially those who are interested in hidden Markov models. In addition, the large memory capacity and channel bandwidth requirements for the storage and transmission of visual data necessitate the use of compression techniques. Future multimedia applications are likely to increasingly store and transmit the visual information in compressed form. Hence indexing the visual content in compressed domain is expected to result in significant savings in computational complexity. Vector quantization (VQ) is an efficient technique for low bit rate image and video compression. In addition, the lower complexity of the decoder makes VQ attractive for low power systems and applications which require fast decoding. Most importantly, VQ is naturally an indexing technique, where a block of pixels is compactly represented using an index (label) which corresponds to a codebook. In this thesis, we propose the novel concept of using VQ for joint compression and indexing of images and video. The images/image frames are compressed using VQ and the labels and codewords are employed in indexing the visual content. First, we present a review of image/video compression and indexing. We then propose two techniques in the VQ compressed domain for image indexing. In the first technique, the histogram of codewords weighted by the number of labels is used as feature vector for indexing. In the second technique, the histogram of the labels, which are used to represent an image, is used as an index. We also propose a new technique based on adaptive wavelet VQ, which provides an improvement in coding and retrieval performance. Here, the images are decomposed using wavelet transform followed by VQ of the transform coefficients. A usage map of codewords is generated for each image and is stored along with the image. In the retrieval process, the usage map of the query image (VQ encoded) is compared with the corresponding usage maps of the target images in the database. Since video has both spatial and temporal dimensions, a straightforward extension of the image indexing techniques for video indexing is inefficient. We propose to employ both the spatial and temporal features for efficient indexing of video clips. The video sequence is partitioned into shots using the label maps of the individual frames and the camera operations and motion within each shot are then determined by further processing the label maps. Each shot is then represented using a spatio-temporal index. The spatial index represents the content of the key frame (image) of a shot, while the temporal index represents the motion and camera operations within the shot. Detailed simulations have been carried out using a large database of images and video sequences. Simulation results demonstrate the excellent retrieval performance of the proposed techniques at a significantly reduced computational complexity.
