Book Computer Aided Diagnosis of Diabetic Retinopathy

Download or read book Computer Aided Diagnosis of Diabetic Retinopathy written by Muhammad Nadeem Ashraf and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2015-09-03 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Diabetic Retinopathy (DR) is vision threatening problem in diabetic patients and patient may suffers from complete blindness if untreated. Hemorrhages and Microaneurysms (HMAs) are the early signs that appear in retina at initial stages of DR. Early diagnosis of both Hemorrhages and Microaneurysms (HMAs) is crucial to prevent blindness. Continuous increase of diabetic cases in all over the world including Pakistan is limiting the typical manual screening capabilities. There is an urgent need of a robust automatic computer aided diagnosis (CAD) system using digital fundus images for the screening and monitoring of various types of DR to save many sight years of diabetic patients. Automatic detection of DR, especially detection of its early signs (HMAs), is still an open issue. Research work, described in this Book, is focusing on the analysis of various texture features of Region of Interests (ROIs) for the detection of HMAs using state-of-the-art texture descriptors Local Binary Pattern (LBP), which are independent of uneven illumination present in fundus images. This book would be helpful for the students & researchers working in the fields of medical and digital image processing.

Book Development of Hybrid System for Automatic Diagnosis of Diabetic Retinopathy

Download or read book Development of Hybrid System for Automatic Diagnosis of Diabetic Retinopathy written by Safinaz binti Oap Kader Mohideen and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Optic Nerve Head (ONH) and Vascular Intersection (VI) are important features in retina fundus image (RFI). The application of artificial intelligence has not received much attention in the diagnosis, prediction and monitoring of diabetic retinopathy (DR). The hybrid artificial intelligent system includes image processing techniques and neural network trained with back propagation algorithm is proposed in this research work. Combined Cross Number points (CCN) technique which uses a 5×5 window embedded with Artificial Neural Network (ANN) technique has been proposed in the vasculature detection in order to detect the combination of bifurcation and crossover points in (RFI). On the other hand, three techniques are proposed in the ONH detection, namely simple thresholding technique and hybrid numerical differential approach as well as exponential histogram technique.Performance analysis of the system shows that ANN based technique for vascular intersection points detection achieves 100% accuracy on simulated images and a minimum of 92% accuracy on RFI obtained from DRIVE database. Thus, the simulated images have been used to train the artificial neural network (ANN) and on convergence the network is used to test (RFI) from DRIVE database. In the ONH detection, hybrid numerical differential and exponential histogram technique produces 90 % of accuracy as compared to the simple thresholding technique which only achieves 53% of accuracy.

Book Detection of Diabetic Maculopathy Using Image Analysis Techniques

Download or read book Detection of Diabetic Maculopathy Using Image Analysis Techniques written by Eman A. Gani and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2014-11-17 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Diabetic retinopathy is a severe eye disease that affects many diabetic patients. It changes the small blood vessels in the retina resulting in loss of vision. Early detection and diagnosis have been identified as one of the ways to achieve a reduction in the percentage of visual impairment and blindness caused by diabetic retinopathy with emphasis on regular screening for detection and monitoring of this disease. The work in this book mainly focuses on developing a fundus image analysis system that extracts the fundal features of the retina such as optic disk, macula (i.e., fovea) and exudates lesions (hard and soft exudates), which are the fundamental steps in an automated analyzing system to display and diagnosis diabetic retinopathy. The proposed system is carried out in five phases: In the first phase, the background and damaged areas in the image are extracted. In the second phase, thresholding method followed by contrast enhancement method are employed to locate the optic disk .In the third phase, a model based approach to detect the macula and fovea is proposed. In the last phase, hard and soft exudates are detected.

Book Automatic Detection and Analysis of Retinal Diseases

Download or read book Automatic Detection and Analysis of Retinal Diseases written by Hillol Das and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2014-10-09 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Image processing and analysis has great significance in the field of medical science. One such area is the analysis of retinal fundus images. This book explains an automated system for detection and analysis of retinal diseases from fundus images. Common retinal diseases such as Diabetic Retinopathy, Retinitis Pigmentosa and Glaucoma are studied in detail and appropriate detection approaches has been discussed. These diseases usually causes vision loss that in many cases cannot be reversed in advanced stages whereas they can be controlled in the early stages otherwise it progresses to loss of central vision and leads to complete blindness. Experimental results shows very significant detection rate of the methods discussed especially in locating optic disk with normalized cross correlation function. The proposed automated detection system can therefore be deployed for mass screening of retinal fundus images for early detection of common retinal diseases in rural areas where there is non-availability of good number of ophthalmologist and reducing the screening cost in the same time.
