ICIAR is organized annually, and alternates between Europe and North America. ICIAR 2004 was held in Porto, Portugal. The idea of o?ering these conferences came as a result of discussion between researchers in Portugal and Canada to encourage collaboration and exchange, mainly between these two countries, but also with the open participation of other countries, addressing recent advances in theory, methodology and applications. TheresponsetothecallforpapersforICIAR2005wasencouraging.From295 full papers submitted, 153 were ?nally accepted (80 oral presentations, and 73 posters). The review process was carried out by the Program Committee m- bersandotherreviewers;allareexpertsinvariousimageanalysisandrecognition areas. Each paper was reviewed by at least two reviewers, and also checked by the conference co-chairs. The high quality of the papers in these proceedings is attributed ?rst to the authors,and second to the quality of the reviews provided by the experts. Professionals who want to meet the demands in terms of quality regarding the visual rendering of their clients thus want to know to which extent human observers are sensitive to the degradation of an image. Such questions regarding the perceived quality of a reproduced image can be split into two different topics: the printing quality as capacity of a printing system of accurately reproduce an original digital image, and the printed image quality which results from both the reproduction quality and the quality of the original image itself. The first concept relies on physical analysis of the way the original image is deteriorated when transferred onto the support, and we propose to couple it with a sensorial analysis, which aims at assessing perceptual attributes by giving them a value on a certain scale, determined with respect to reference samples classified by a set of observers. The second concept includes the degradation due to the printing plus the perceived quality of the original image, not in the scope of this work. In this report, we focus on the printing quality concept. Our approach first consists in the definition of several printing quality indices, based on measurable criteria using assessment tools based on “objective” image processing algorithms and optical models on a printed-then-scanned image. The conference was the fourteenth in the series of biennial conferences started in 1980. The name of the series re?ects the fact that the conferences are organized in the Nordic (Scandinavian) countries, following the cycle Sweden, Finland, Denmark, and Norway. The event itself has always been international in its participants and presentations. Today there are many conferences in the ?elds related to SCIA. In this s- uation our goal is to keep up the reputation for the high quality and friendly environment of SCIA. We hope that participants feel that it’s worth attending the conference. Therefore, both the scienti?c and social program were designed to support the best features of a scienti?c meeting: to get new ideas for research and to have the possibility to exchange thoughts with fellow scientists. To ful?ll the above-mentioned goals, the conference was a single-track event. This meant that a higher percentage of the papers than in earlier SCIAs were presented as posters. We hope that this gave the participants better chances to follow the presentations that they were interested in. SCIA 2005 attracted a record number of submissions: 236 manuscripts. From these, 124 were accepted: 31 oral presentations and 93 poster presentations. This led to an acceptance rate of 53%. The program included also six plenary presentations and three tutorials.

Book excerpt: Color printing is traditionally achieved by separating an input image into four channels (CMYK) and binarizing them using halftoning algorithms, in order to designate the locations of ink droplet placement. Multi-channel printing means a reproduction that employs additional inks other than these four in order to augment the color gamut (scope of reproducible colors) and reduce undesirable ink droplet visibility, so-called graininess. One aim of this dissertation has been to characterize a print setup in which both the primary inks CMYK and their light versions are used. The presented approach groups the inks, forming subsets, each representing a channel that is reproduced with multiple inks. To halftone the separated channels in the present methodology, a specific multilevel halftoning algorithm is employed, halftoning each channel to multiple levels. This algorithm performs the binarization from the ink subsets to each separate colorant. Consequently, the print characterization complexity remains unaltered when employing the light inks, avoiding the normal increase in computational complexity, the one-to-many mapping problem and the increase in the number of training samples. The results show that the reproduction is visually improved in terms of graininess and detail enhancement. The secondary color inks RGB are added in multi-channel printing to increase the color gamut. Utilizing them, however, potentially increases the perceived graininess. Moreover, employing the primary, secondary and light inks means a color separation from a three-channel CIELAB space into a multi-channel colorant space, resulting in colorimetric redundancy in which multiple ink combinations can reproduce the same target color. To address this, a proposed cost function is incorporated in the color separation approach, weighting selected factors that influence the reproduced image quality, i.e. graininess and color accuracy, in order to select the optimal ink combination. The perceived graininess is modeled by employing S-CIELAB, a spatial low-pass filtering mimicking the human visual system. By applying the filtering to a large dataset, a generalized prediction that quantifies the perceived graininess is carried out and incorporated as a criterion in the color separation. Consequently, the presented research increases the understanding of color reproduction and image quality in multi-channel printing, provides concrete solutions to challenges in the practical implementation, and rises the possibilities to fully utilize the potential in multi-channel printing for superior image quality.

Book excerpt: "This document is a report on the research of a potentially superior method of color image transformation for producing rapid and accurate printed color output from a digitized color image. The primary objective is to reduce the complexities, inaccuracies, objectionable artifacts, and processing time common to current methods of color modeling. A new method of vector-corrected mathematical modeling combined with improved color space interpolation is studied. This achievement allows for rapid automatic closed-loop color-match calibration between image capture and output devices. Currently, digital image creation or manipulation systems rely on image proof printing which is slow and often of poor color fidelity or proprietary. The ideal system would provide optimum color reproduction fidelity and rapid proof printing at a low cost. Existing systems often rely on mathematical models for image con version for printing. These models are usually a bottleneck in the proofing process and are not accurate enough for many applications. Increasing their accuracy rapidly increases processing time to the point of impracticality well before graphic arts quality levels are achieved. A common solution to this problem in larger systems is a massive and tediously generated color look-up table based on actual measured print samples. This method is costly and does not readily accommodate printing process changes such as paper grade or ink color. Attempts to reduce the size of these look-up tables and the large quantity of required sample measurements have been disappointing. In this thesis, new methods will be reported which should allow practical small-system color proof printing with excellent color fidelity and rapid processing. By eliminating common problems associated with color space interpolation, these new methods make closed-loop control practical with a relatively small quantity of sample measurements which can be automatically printed, scanned, and incorporated into conversion processes."--Abstract.
