Book excerpt: Excerpt from Woman in France: During the Eighteenth Century Unconscious of the suspicions she had aroused, Manon, with a beating heart, left he1 father' 5 house on the appointed day, and pro ceeded to the gloomy dwelling In the Rue de la Platriere, where Rousseau then resided. She ascended the dark staircase, and paused before the narrow door of the illustrious Genevese, with mingled emotion and respect. She rang the bell, the sour faced Therese opened the door, eyed her suspiciously, and When she had explained the object of her visit, abruptly informed her that M. Rousseau knew she was not the author of the letter she had sent; that the stratagem was discovered, and that he would not see her with this she closed the door In her face. Little did rousseau sus pect that the young girl thus unceremoniously dismissed from his threshold, was destined to become one of the first and most illustrious victims of the democratic principles it had been the study of his life time to teach. Book Women of the French Revolution Classic Reprint

Download or read book Women of the French Revolution Classic Reprint written by Winifred Stephens and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-24 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Women of the French Revolution The Women of the French Revolution is so vast a theme that hitherto, even in France, it has not yet met with anything like exhaustive treatment. Michelet himself admits that the title of his book, Les F emmes de la Revolution,1 is misleading, and that he has written of a few heroines rather than of the mass of revolutionary women. A much later writer, M. Adrien Lasserre, in his work on Women's Participa tion in the Revolution2 says that he has found it impossible to cover completely a field so extensive. The attempt which M. Lasserre has renounced cannot be made here. All I hope to do is to give some idea of the rank and file of revolutionary women and of their famous leaders, during little more than a brief period of five memorable years. That period extends from May, 1789, until July, 1794, with some glances now and then, before and after. One aspect of this subject of revolutionary women - their connection with the secret societies of the day I have purposely ignored. It is obscure and highly controversial. Unfortunately, though these societies have been much written about, and especially of late, it has often been in a partisan spirit. This book will constantly deal with parties, but I trust not in the spirit of a partisan. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Women of Versailles: The Court of Louis XIV Arely has a city presented a spectacle so striking as that afforded by Versailles during the struggle of the army against the Commune. Between the grand century and our epoch, between the majesty of old France and the intestine broils of new France, between the dismal horrors of which Paris was the scene and the radiant souvenirs of the city of the sun-king, there was a contrast as painful as it was startling. Those avenues where one might see the head of the government and the illustrious defeated man of Reichshofien, that place of arms encumbered with cannons, those red flags, sad trophies of the civil war, which were taken to the Assembly as tokens of mourning as well as of victory, that magnificent palace whence seemed to issue a suppliant voice adjuring our soldiers to save so fair a heritage of historic splendors and national grandeurs, all filled the soul with profound emotion.
