Book Illustrative Shorthand Classic Reprint

Download or read book Illustrative Shorthand Classic Reprint written by Mrs. L. Bronson and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-04 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Illustrative Shorthand In this work, Illustrative Shorthand, the one great object kept steadily in view has been to make it thoroughly practical, as well as to shorten the time required to master it to a three months' course, and in this time to become so familiar with the principles as to be able to build therefrom any word spoken in the English language, thereby making the student an independent writer. Shorthand alone is illustrated, and to this end the first departure from all other methods has been to discard entirely the vocal chart, as it is called, or vocalization as formerly taught, which constituted the principal part of the work for the first five months. Then, in order to write at a speed exceeding eighty words a minute, this vocalization has to be dropped and the habit formed of striking the dot and dash to be overcome, which I can assure you, from my own personal experience, is no easy task. I was a diligent student of the Pitman system, and after examining other systems brought before the public consider the Pitman the most comprehensive published. But in teaching that system, as I have been for years, I saw the necessity of a shorter method for attaining the desired object. There were so many worthy young women and men who had neither time nor money to expend on so long a course, having others dependent upon them, and were compelled to give up good paying positions on account of not understanding Shorthand, as no firm doing any considerable amount of business can now afford to do without a shorthand business correspondent. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Text-Book of Shorthand The publication of this little volume is not planned, in any way, as a commercial adventure, to be pushed with all the resources of the publisher. The present issue is a small one, of two hundred and fifty copies, intended mainly for presentation to my professional colleagues in this country and in America, and to a few of those friends on the Continent who have overwhelmed me with their hospitality at various International Shorthand Congresses it may, I hope, secure some critical review in the Press some copies may find a place in public and private libraries or collections. In the circumstances, I do not think I need offer apology for the rather unusually intimate tone of this Preface. The system is presented as compiled, by a practical Shorthand Writer, for the use of those who desire to become practical Shorthand Writers. Its general idea may be illustrated by the quotation of a passage from an article I wrote in a Shorthand magazine, as far back as I895 1 The great vice of the few systems I know is the absence of joinable vowels. I think the inventor of a really good practical system will begin at the other end of the stick. Former authors seem to have taken the various materials at their command, and allocated the best outlines to the most frequently recurring consonants, the vowels being provided for out of what remained The coming author will give of his best to the vowels. Download or read book A Manual of Cursive Shorthand Classic Reprint written by Hugh L. Callendar and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Manual of Cursive Shorthand Hitherto the use of Shorthand has been chiefly confined to clerks and reports: it has as yet, to any appreciable extent, supplanted longhand for use in ordinary writing. The reason of this appears to be that the majority of existing system are either, like Talyor's, deficient in completeness (that is, they cannot distinguish words with sufficient accuracy), or, like Pitman's, involve too many ambiguities and refinements, and cannot be fully written at a reasonable speed (see p. 15). The conditions which a system of shorthand for general use should satisfy, are discussed at some length in the Introduction to the present work. The argument is briefly recapitulated on p. 40, to which the reader is referred for summary of the claims of 'Cursive Shorthand.' The chief features of 'Cursive' are facility, completeness, and freedom from it is therefore wanting in brevity. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manual of Munson Shorthand It was the first to abandon the corresponding style of writing and -to teach but one form for the amanuensis and the court reporter. This one change in the method of presentation, apart from all other improvements which have been made, has saved an immense amount of time and labor 011 the part of learners. The student learns at first the best form for every word and phrase, instead of being taught one form and afterwards having the double task of forgetting that form and learning a new one for the same word or phrase. The method of adding hooks has also been much simplified. The old and cumbersome method of reversing certain stems when hooks are added has been abandoned, and every stem has been made subject to the same rules as regards the joining of hooks, circles and loops, as well as halving and doubling. It lightens the mechanical and manual part of the author's work to a very great extent - reduces it, in fact, to a minimum 3 it spares the eyes of author and compositor, and by its rapid writing saves much time. I have been asked whether its use did not interfere with an author's facility for composition and check the flow of his ideas. I have found the effect quite otherwise. My experience is that by relieving one of the mechanical trouble, or at least of much of the mechanical trouble, it sets the mind free and leaves the author in hotter condition to follow steadily the course of his thoughts.
