Book excerpt: Excerpt from Illustrations of the Comparative Anatomy of the Nervous System The Author having had frequent occasions for referring to Comparative Anatomy during the progress of his publications on the Nervous System, lie conceived that representations of his dissections might interest many, and especially assist those who were about to enter upon similar pursuits. But, on so comprehensive a subject, it became difficult to determine upon an arrangement that would make a work concise and useful. After much consideration, it appeared probable that this intention would he in a great measure answered by selecting such examples as would explain the scheme on which the nervous system is generally founded; for thus its practical investigation would he facilitated, and the extension of knowledge promoted in the best and most efficient manner. It is desirable that researches by actual dissection should be encouraged as much as possible, as thus only can the prospective advantages of science be consulted. If books be entirely confided in, all improvement must atop. These ought, therefore, to be esteemed as mere helps towards that perfection, which can only he approached by the active perseverance of individuals through progressive ages. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Twelve Lectures on the Structure of the Central Nervous System: For Physicians and Students The wish expressed on many bands that this little work should be adapted to the needs of those who wished to practice under its guidance has been complied with, in that the number of cuts has been increased and the description of individual regions been made more exhaustive. A treatise on the comparative anatomy of the nervous system, based on personal investigation, has been embodied in the work. This addition, which permits us to take a more general morphological View of the macroscopic structures, will also serve as a guide to those who wish to pursue independent courses of study in this most important 'portion of brain anatomy. Book Anatomy and Physiology of the Nervous System Classic Reprint

Download or read book Anatomy and Physiology of the Nervous System Classic Reprint written by Sedgwick Mather and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-26 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Anatomy and Physiology of the Nervous System The preparation of this work has been undertaken in response to what experience in the class-room has shown to be the need of a text-book especially adapted to beginners - a book giving, by itself, a concise, but complete, presentation of the physiology of the nervous system, together with the more important features of its anatomy. In dealing with the physiological phase of the subject, it has seemed best, viewed from the students standpoint, to confine the statements mostly to the established and generally recognized facts, leaving the numerous theories - fully and admirably discussed in many contemporary works - to be taken up at a later stage of the study, after the facts have been acquired and mastered, this plan, it is found, being the most effective as a time-saver, and resulting in the clearest and most lasting impressions. The anatomical matter included in the volume is only that which seems most necessary fox an intelligent understanding of the physiology, and of the most frequent service in clinical work, the general text-book on anatomy always being available for further details. Both the structure and the various functions of the sympathetic system have been set forth with a fullness commensurate with their importance. Of the whole work condensation has been the guiding principle. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Anatomy of the Brain: With a General View of the Nervous System Though both Gall and Spurzheim lived through much reproach, yet long before death they enjoyed the bright satisfaction of witnessing the rapid march of their Opinions. Concessions to the truth Of their observations poured in upon them from all quarters slowly, indeed, but with a steady and increasing progress. France has honored Gall, as she should, with that generous regret she always bestows upon the remains of those who have honored her. Great Britain and new-england, who knew Spurzheim Well, have striven to do justice to his character and remains, by wiping away the Obloquy and reproach cast upon his successful labors, and by bestowing on him the highest and only honors the living can heap upon the dead. Book A Laboratory Outline of Neurology Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Laboratory Outline of Neurology Classic Reprint written by C. Judson Herrick and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-28 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Laboratory Outline of Neurology The laboratory course in neurology which is here outlined has grown up in the University of Chicago during the past twenty years. Many teachers have participated in this work and all of these have contributed something of value to the procedure now in use. Acknowledgments cannot be made here to all from whom valuable help has been received; but especial mention should be made of the initial program laid out in 1900 by Doctors Barker and Kyes when they were suddenly confronted with the problem of teaching the anatomy of the brain to a very large class of medical students with practically no equipment and a very limited amount of anatomical material (see the paper by Barker and Kyes cited in the appended Bibliography). The large measure of success which they attained should encourage other teachers whose laboratory equipment is inadequate. Later Doctors Donaldson and Hardesty elaborated this course, and when the direction of the work was assumed by the senior author in 1907 he received valuable assistance from Doctor Elizabeth H. Dunn in reorganizing the course into the form out of which the present Outline has grown. Professor G. W. Bartelmez has also contributed freely from his own extensive experience. In the year 1915 the Outline was thoroughly revised and privately printed by the authors. In the present work it has been again revised and recast in more general form, which it is hoped may be found more widely useful. The fundamental purpose of the procedure here outlined is to assist the student as early in his course as possible to formulate his knowledge of the nervous system in terms of the functional significance of the parts. This book was released on 2017-10-28 with total page 90 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Anatomical, Phylogenetical and Clinical Studies on the Central Nervous System As a representative of Dutch neurology I have given my lectures, based on the anatomy and the physiology of the nervous system. Many of us in Holland work along this line. I know that not a few of my explanations in my lectures were hypothetical and that many facts might be differently interpreted. But in preparing these Herter lectures I felt that it was not Wise to limit myself to bring facts, found by my research work. My American colleagues did not ask me to come to Baltimore to hear only some objective facts. They desired also to get an impression of my per sonality. A personality is always dualistic, good and bad. This psychological fact is not always clear, but is always true. My ideas may be right or wrong, in any case they are part of my personality, for I believe in them. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
